Then and Now- June 1908 and 2019. Construction of the Honeycutt Tunnel in North Cove in McDowell County, North Carolina and what it looks like today.
The railroad bed that snakes up the face of the Blue Ridge for 13 miles is now called the Clinchfield Loops. There are 16 tunnels on the Loops from Altapass to North Cove. Upon completion, the Clinchfield Loops were known as the engineering marvel of the 20th century.
Honeycutt Tunnel is the last tunnel on the famous Clinchfield Loops. It is 1688 feet long.

On the Old Fort Loops in Old Fort in McDowell County, North Carolina looking through McElroy Tunnel and Licklog Tunnel. Since Helene, the railroad remains closed between Old Fort and Black Mountain, due to numerous slides and washouts. Norfolk Southern has not announced plans to reopen that section.
This historic section of 12 miles of track and 7 tunnels known as the “Old Fort Loops” got that name because a series of loops were necessary to make it possible to climb and descend the trip to cross the Blue Ridge.
This tunnel is located in Stumptown in Marion in McDowell County, North Carolina. It was built in 1908.
The tunnel is just south of Clinchcross where the Southern Railway S-Line crosses the Clinchfield Railroad.
*Interesting Fact: Steam-era engineers often compared the hotness of hell to the hotness that was inside of this tunnel as they passed through it...

This beautiful place is now gone. The floods in Rio Grande do Sul made this tunnel collapse unfortunatelly. it was a magnificent place, something out of a Studio Ghibli movie. I went there in 2018 and i can still smell the tunnel if i close my eyes. A devastating lost for Brazil.
