Ivory Aquino (“Tales of the City,” “When We Rise”) has been cast in the HBO Max feature film “Batgirl” as Alysia Yeoh, the best friend of the titular superhero, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon (Leslie Grace).
Both Aquino and Yeoh are transgender, marking the first time a live-action feature film adaptation of a DC Comics title will feature an openly trans character. Yeoh first appeared in a 2011 issue of “Batgirl” written by Gail Simone and penciled by Ardian Syaf.
News of Aquino’s casting first leaked online in mid-January after Grace posted a photo seemingly from the set of the film to her Instagram story, tagging Aquino and captioning the shot (of two women crossing the street) with “Barbara and Alysia 😍🦇”.

A trans actress has made history by being cast as the lead in a new Indian film.
Anjali Ameer is the first trans woman to play a female lead in Indian cinema, in what is being described as an exciting new chapter for the industry.
Anjali told the India Times about the struggles she has faced to get where she is today. “Initially, it wasn’t acceptable for my family. So, I ran away from home. I lived with transgender communities in Coimbatore and Bengaluru in the next couple of years. It was a period of real personal struggle”, she said.
“Later, my family accepted me for who I am and wanted me to come back home. They have been supportive and they are my strength.”
The film currently has no name but is bilingual and will be released in Tamil and Malayalam.
India has A LOT of work to do for the LGBTQIA+ community, but this role for Anjali is progressive and groundbreaking, and this could be an open door to future opportunities for the trans community in film.
