Today's book is 'Trans Britain' edited by Christine Burns, published in 2018.
This book is brilliant for studying the history of trans people in Great Britain c. 1910-2018. This is a book with many essay contributions - e.g. Christine Burns, Fox Fisher, Jane Fae, Mark Rees, the Rev Christina Beardsley etc. All are fascinating reads! The book was very useful for my undergraduate work also.

Trans Britain by Christine Burns
Over the last five years, transgender people have seemed to burst into the public eye: Time declared 2014 a ‘trans tipping point’, while American Vogue named 2015 ‘the year of trans visibility’. From our television screens to the ballot box, transgender people have suddenly become part of the zeitgeist.
This apparently overnight emergence, though, is just the latest stage in a long and varied history. The renown of Paris Lees and Hari Nef has its roots in the efforts of those who struggled for equality before them, but were met with indifference – and often outright hostility – from mainstream society.
Trans Britain chronicles this journey in the words of those who were there to witness a marginalised community grow into the visible phenomenon we recognise today: activists, film-makers, broadcasters, parents, an actress, a rock musician and a priest, among many others.
Here is everything you always wanted to know about the background of the trans community, but never knew how to ask.

Today I got my order from The Bookish Type, an independent queer bookshop I've been dying to go to since it opened. Unfortunately, due to covid, I haven't been able to visit. Fortunately, however, I was able to order online!
At this point though, I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't have my bank card confiscated!
I just signed up for a book subscription with A Box of Stories because they have a student discount and a rewards scheme! I was relatively sensible about it though and set my subscription for every three months instead of monthly...
I'm reading Trans Britain and the first specifically transgender organisation in Britain was called The Self Help Association for Transsexuals - or SHAFT for short. The book is very disparaging of the inappropriateness of the name but tbh this is Exactly the kind of humour I expect from trans people lol
Also the founder Judy Cousins "faked her own disappearance (and implied death)" to avoid coming out to her family when she transitioned which is kinda iconic, although not necessarily recommended

I've been finishing up a few books, playing the Last of Us 1 & 2 and doing Uni work, so I haven't started a new book for a while!
Bought this one ages ago and kept getting distracted by other stuff, heard great things about it so I expect it will be an interesting read! Very much looking forward to getting stuck into it.

Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this book before, but it sounds like it would be a particularly painful read now due to the way the british landscape has changed since this was published in 2018.
Queer Lit, Manchester’s longest running independent gay bookshop, sent “hundreds of copies” of Trans Britain by Christine Burns to MPs on Wednesday.
