Tell me about your trans Mako story yet to be written please???
So, Mako was born male but it soon became very clear to her parents that wasn't exactly right. Her parents were in the process of figuring out if Mako was trans or non binary or a GNC male when they died.
Turns out Mako's trans but living on the streets with no parents and a brother to take care of means for the longest time Mako never gets to transition. Luckily, Mako is androgynous enough that her dysphoria isn't too bad when able to present female, though it gets really bad when she presents male. Sadly, more often than not Mako has to present male (keeping safe from the Triads, not wanting to come out to the whole world while Pro bending and so on).
Mako's name is actually Makoto, though even as a child she never went by it, but she legally changes it to just Mako when she can, as it's more unisex and allows her to keep the name her parents gave her while still having a somewhat feminine name.
When we meet Mako she's pre-ttransition and presenting as male and Korra for a while thinks she is male though she eventually learns otherwise. It kind of shakes her world views as she didn't realize that was a thing (raised in a compound).
Mako's relationship with Korra in season 1 is a bit odd as Mako's not sure if she likes Korra or wants to be Korra. One of Mako's main causes of dysphoria are her muscles. Due to the testosterone she naturally produces she forms muscle easily and it makes her feel boxy and unfeminine but Korra can pull it off while Mako feels like she can't. It really messes with Mako's head at first.
Asami meets her when she's presenting female but mistakes Mako as a GNC male (cue her makeover in the show going sideways quickly as Mako realized Asami asked her out thinking she was a guy). Asami is pretty chill about the whole thing though and quickly assures Mako that she's perfectly fine with Mako being a woman.
Cue season 1 and 2 shenanigans with the only difference being Mako's trans (hey, she's still Mako and she's gonna Mako). Korra being the baby gay she is accidentally outs Mako to her parents without Mako's permission and Kya quickly sweeps Korra, Mako and Asami under her wing before they self combust trying to figure out this LGBT thing on their own.
All of the above information is delivered Remembrances style to Lin as Mako doesn't want to go to her first hormone therapy session alone but never came out to anyone other than Bolin, Asami, Korra and Kya (who she didn't actually come out to). None of them were around as this is post season 3 and Korra, Asami and Bolin are MIA. So Mako asks Lin who's awkward about it but is more than willing to support Mako.
During the season 3 - season 4 gap, Mako transitions which is the meat of the story. Asami eventually reconnects with Mako during the gap and Korra actually replies to Mako's letters this time as Mako mentioned her transition and Korra wished to be there to help even if she couldn't physically be there. It helped both Mako and Korra through hard times.
The story is basically Mako building a support group to fall back on as she works through a monumental change she's been wanting for forever.
Lin plays momma bear, Wu (once he stops hitting on Mako) becomes a great support and Mako helps him realize a few things himself, Iroh II becomes Mako's trans mentor being trans himself, and the story ends with Makorrasami as the three women fall in love over the three year gap and reconnect in season 4.
There's a really touching moment planned for Zhu Li and Varrick's wedding where Bolin note that Mako looks like Naoki.
Basically, a feel good Mako story set around Mako finally getting to transition after years of being denied it (though make no mistake there are sad bits).
The first chapter is recap style of Mako explaining her story to Lin.
The second, third and forth will be each year of the gap and broken into twelve parts each.
The the last is season 4 with a Makorrasami ending.
Korra and Asami are still bisexual but Mako is a major lesbian, Wu is probably going to be aroace or somewhere in that scope, and Iroh II is gay. Kay is still her lesbian self and Lin is bisexual, though I'm not sure if I want to put KyaLin in the story as they don't really share screen time as the outline stands now. I might imply it.
