Spirit Blessed Zuko and his dead beat mom Agni!!
In honour of me spending almost the entirety of the first episode thinking he was a girl, transfem Zuko is now canon in my heart
Can I just say, one of my favorite things about the most recent transgirl Zuko fic I've read (and subscribed to) is Azula referring to Zuko as her little sister. And it's because Zuko has only just started being her sister (aka her egg has hatched/is hatching, and Azula is the first person she's come out to (iirc)), while she (Azula) has been her (Zuko's) sister for 9 years.
It's basically:
*Azula calls Zuko "little sister"*
"I'm older than you."
"Yes, but I was your sister longer than you have been my sister."
ive been rewatching avatar and zuko is so transgender its insane
estrogen could save her
I see a lot of Trans Zuko on occasion and honestly when I first watched the series, I did think up 'Transmasc Zuko'. I'm happy my vision is shared. But I also think, Transfem Azula is awesome. Dunno why, just seems cool. I honestly think both siblings being trans is an awesome concept for fics. And it also ties into part of my own writing about 'trans rights in the Fire Nation.' Specifically, in my fics, the FN doesn't criminalize queer rights. Anyone can write anything, if you make the FN homophobic I get it, but I'd like to explain my logic. To me the retcon of 'Sozin making FN anti-LGBT' doesn't seem logical. He believes the Fire Nation - openminded enough to let women to serve equally as part of the broader military - is the best empire in history. NO other Nation has a unisex military at the time of ATLA. If they weren't culturally queerphobic before, why would he have any reason to restrict it when the other nations are more likely to be -phobic in correlation w/ their misogynist structures? Given his pride in Fire Nation culture, he would more likely use it as proof that the FN is more "enlightened" than the other nations by virtue of being progressive. If anything, the Fire Nation's more interesting to me as a 'progressive evil'. And I think they didn't do that despite it better scaling with the general across-the-board equal rights record the ATLA nations have since it could be misconstrued or just difficult to swallow. Now. We in ATLA see the FN mainly through perspectives of nobility & Royalty, who will 100% have expectations placed on them/lack some freedoms even if say the average middle class fire national can get Fire Estrogen or whatever any day of the week. That itself, is a really interesting place for a queer character to be and can explain why Zuko, Azula, Mai etc. might not know much abt queer culture. For instance, I hc Ty Lee's time at the circus w/commoners opened her eyes to Bisexuality. But to me, showing how a nation might prop up a progressive facade to morally whitewash its wrongdoings is SO rich. I think since the other nations happen to have more outward sex discrimination + the Fire Nation Imperialism-Driven Superiority Complex, the FN are the type to take everything as proof they need to 'enlighten' their 'lessers'. I think there's ATLA places that are actually queer-friendly, tho. Long Feng would make anything legal to get people to Not Think Abt the war, Bumi would definitely not give af (best thing Netflix ATLA did was making Oma/Shu WLW that's fucking Cool) & the title of 'most actual progressive ATLA place' obv goes to Kyoshi Island. I feel like the Swampbenders wouldn't give af too, same with the Sun Warriors. But, rather than being homophobic in law, to me the Fire Nation's the types to have "inclusivity" written on the books but actually just not be as Good as they say they are. Gay rights may be legal, but that doesn't mean gay relationships are taken seriously in a nobility where arranged marriages & expectation of producing heirs are common. Trans rights exist, but it doesn't mean the corrupt Fire Sages are as fair as they should be in ascribing care. The Fire Nation is still very obviously patriarchal. Ty Lee, Mai, and Azula are all great looks at girls under patriarchy & what that shapes them into. Azula herself was named after a man as the way of representing her power, after all. They prop themselves up as being better than everyone else but they really aren't as good as they say. That's a concept I find neat, so that's what my FN is like. I say the FN's "roughly modern" in terms of women/queer rights but remember. Modern does not mean Perfect or Not Patriarchal or even Good. This is all to say that, I do see Ozai's Zuko-hate meaning he'd still be an ass if Zuko's gay or trans. & flabbergasted if his 'perfect child' is also trans. There is something Very Good about "asshole dad has two trans kids and they get to rob him of power." Maybe I'll write Trans Fire Siblings someday. But I have other plans for writing trans characters in ATLA first.
