Today’s Davenport doesn’t know how to control bed hair.
[Image description start. A colored waist up illustration of Davenport, a tan gnome with an irritated expression. He has red hair, mustache and a goatee. The hair is wavy mess a little past his shoulders. Davenport is wearing a mid-waist chest binder with the trans flag colors and dark brown pants. His tail is swooped behind him also a little unkept. im sorry if you've been getting a lot of asks about the daemon au, but i was curious as to why you picked certain daemons for certain people? especially lup?
oh don’t worry, i do love talking about it! (even if I sometimes take a while to respond...)
Barry was the first one I decided on, and it was kinda the origin of the au. Basically i remembered boomslangs existed and thought “dang that’d be a good daemon for Barry”. I think it works for him because they’re secretly deadly, but not in a malicious way? I mean, no snake is actually malicious, they’re just wild animals, but for a long time no one even realized boomslangs were venomous, much less deadly. They’re very, very shy and just...real bad at biting people. They’re mouths were not made for biting big things. This poor, nervous, deadly noodle just feels very Barry to me.
Taako’s was really easy, what with him already having a associated animal. He’s a mongoose boy, and that’s just canon, babe.
Then for Lup, nothing came to mind immediately so I figured I’d look up mongoose on wikipedia and see what was closely related to them. Turns out ‘mongoose’ is kinda a colloquial term for the Herpestidae family, and the next closest ‘relatives’ are just other feliforms, which includes hyena’s. I think it works because hyenas are kinda tricky and spooky, but also p smart and (spotted hyenas at least) are some of the most social carnivores, with complex social structures comparable to primates. Somehow “hyper social dog-cat who will laugh in your face before they and they’re pack rip you to shreds” just feels right for Lup.
aaaand then that’s all I really bothered to figure out (though someone else was kind enough to figure out davenports daemon for me) And that’s all I got!
idk if you're still doing these but uh, maybe like any of 💜,💛,or ♡ for davenchurch?
💜 who said "i love you" first? or, if neither has said it yet, who is more likely to say it first?okay so it would be really easy to say merle, right? because he’s affectionate and soft and good and kind and davenport, as i’ve established, is slightly terrified of these basically now-nonexistent regulations, but merle is also really patient. and he knows he has to wait for davenport to be ready, so dav is definitely the one who says it first, but merle’s definitely been feeling it for a while.
💛 who believes in soulmates?merle, absolutely. davenport was p much born cynical, so he’s really hesitant to come out and say yes we’re literally born to be together, but i think he come be convinced that soulmates exist after being with merle. absolutely.
♡ who is the bigger romantic openly? secretly?openly? merle, absolutely. public breakfast, PDA, smooches on the forehead, everything. but davenport, privately, once the walls come down, is ridiculously romantic, even though i think even that takes a really long time for him to do.
so i was looking around your blog because you make Really Lovely art and from what i can find i think you've done art of every member of the ipre except Davenport (except for the v cute scribbly doodle in the scene where taako comes out of the amulet)? do you have a clear hc of him? you have such a cool style and i would love to see what you do with him? (if not thats Totally cool im just curious)
Thank you!! <3 I didn’t realise I’d left poor Dav out until you sent me this, I’m sorry capnport! But my headcanon for him is pretty uninteresting, it’s just real life Drew Davenport except gnomier. I hope that’s not disappointing TwT;
ok im gonna be Predictable but after all the talks we had about dav, what about 47 with davenchurch? or if thats not your style, then just more generally, something between merle and davenport (romantic or not, idc) in Don't Stop Me could be really cool?
“nalright im gonna Do My Best
this is set in Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Before for context, during cycle 98. You don’t need to have read it to understand, though.
“Merle,” Davenport says, not turning around. “Is it urgent? I’m–”
Merle, in complete disregard to his closed-off body language, his dismissive tone, or basic politeness, collapses on the oversized beds.
The IPRE had only had sizes available for the larger races. It just hadn’t been practical to commission two smaller beds when Gnomes, Halflings and Dwarves made up suck a small percentage of the Institute.
Well, now they make up two sevenths of the whole organization. More, sometimes.
More, right now.
Two fifths.
It’s not even a hostile plane.
Davenport shakes his head.
“Not right now, Merle,” he says.
His bed creaks.
“I know you’re scared,” says Merle.
Davenport stops.
“I’m not scared. That’s ridiculous. There’s nothing threatening on this entire plane.”
Merle waits for a moment and he can feel his old friend’s eyebrows raise.
He holds out for a moment more before he can’t stand it. He turns around.
“Look, two of us are dead. We’re getting closer and closer to getting caught every year. I’m allowed to feel, to feel a little defensive, okay? I’m not scared,” he insists, but Merle looks right through him. Damn him.
“We’ll make it,” is all he says. Davenport shakes his head.
“Will we, though? When we start killing ourselves, will we? What hope is there when we’ve given up on ourselves?” Even as he speaks, he feels the frustration grow and he begins to pace. “It just doesn’t make any damn sense, Merle, I can’t–I can’t even keep us going if the crew doesn’t go with.”
It’s every captain’s worst fear, the crew refusing to follow. What good is he if he can’t lead these people to safety? If he can’t even get them to survive day to day? If they don’t trust him to keep them safe? What is he without this mission?
A hand is on his shoulder, halting him.
“But you’re not scared,” Merle says wryly, and he glares. His old friend sobers quickly. “I know. We’ll have a hell of a talk with him when he gets back, and Lup is already sorry. But this wasn’t your fault.”
He shrugs Merle’s hand off to resume pacing, but Merle is standing directly in his way.
“Move,” he says. Merle looks around and shrugs.
“I’m good here.”
Davenport lets out a huff of frustration and walks around him. Now he has to pace awkwardly in a semicircle around the immovable oak that is Merle Hitower Highchurch.
“It’s not like being ‘scared’ would do any good anyway,” he snaps, air-quoting viciously. “What the fuck is the use? It doesn’t make me smarter, it doesn’t make me better, it doesn’t tell me what to do–what the fuck is the point of being scared?”
Merle shakes his head. “I know you’re smarter than that.”
Davenport sits on the bed.
“It doesn’t help,” he says. “It just gets in the way of what I need to do.”
“Feelings tend to do that,” Merle agrees, because he’s kind of a dick sometimes.
Davenport slumps. He should have known better than to argue with Merle in the first place. “How are you holding up?”
Merle shrugs.
“I’m scared, too,” he says, quietly, like he wouldn’t in front of anyone else. “Pissed. At myself for not seeing it, at Taako for doing it. That I couldn’t save either of them. But they’re coming back, and it’s not too late to fix this.”
He joins Davenport on the bed. Just sitting side by side, looking at the room. There are maps everywhere. Davenport had always wanted to be an adventurer. Maybe some day, if they survive this.
Merle, his port in a storm, sits next to him in silence for a little while. They each think through what they need to. Deep thoughts, troubling thoughts.
And then, when he feels ready, Davenport hops up.
“Bridge?” he asks, already getting the cards. Merle cracks his shoulders.
you mentioned davenport so maybe like 100 “I’m not leaving.” or 105 "You’re not going anywhere." or 67 “You’ll be fine.”? (or if these don't work its nbd and i could send smth else if you want)
myles im sorry you just wanted a simple Dav fic, i did too, but instead i wrote 1k of davenchurch shenanigans
As soon as Davenport could get planetside he did. The idea of living on the moon any longer than he had to was painful.
The only place that this left for him to stay was at Merle’s place, which was not necessarily a bad thing. Merle was kind to him, the most understanding of all of them, and it was almost easy to fall back into their old pattern.
Davenport insisted that he only stay until he had his ship ready to sail.
“It’ll b-be no more than, than a month,” he promised Merle.
The dwarf smiled. “No problem with me, Dav. Stay as long as you need.”
*
Davenport tried to fight against the pattern that he and Merle fell into, but it was so easy. Davenport would work for half the day on the wreck of a boat he had bought, he’d eat lunch with Merle and he would spend the rest of the day supervising Merle’s kids as they strolled around the beach. Davenport would stroll with Merle, keeping the kids in their periphery, collecting sea shells and competing on who could chuck them farther. After dinner Davenport and Merle would teach the kids a new card game until they went to bed. Some days the gnome and the dwarf would continue playing games until the early morning. Other times they would abandon the cards for stargazing or wine. Merle knew the ocean, but Davenport knew the stars, even if these weren’t the ones he grew up with.
And Davenport knew what was happening. He knew that Merle was distracting him from working, from leaving. He couldn’t bring it in himself to fight it.
Still, too quickly, he finished.
He didn’t tell Merle when he finished. Instead, when the kids had gone to bed one day the two had grabbed a bottle of wine and shuffled onto the roof of the Highchurch estate to stargaze.
For a creature so small, Davenport always was drawn to the larger-to the great above, to the great below. To the great.
He supposes that’s why he’s drawn to Merle.
“So, what’s the occasion, buddy?” Merle asks, always perceptive.
“W-what makes you think, think that there’s an o-occasion?” Davenport says.
Merle raises his eyebrows. “Stargazing, drinking, sure, those are both fine separately, but together?” Merle laughs, grabbing for the bottle of wine. “What, you leaving or something?”
Davenport looks up at the stars as he replies. “Day after t-tomorrow.”
He can see Merle pause, see him turn. There’s an uncomfortable silence that is finally broken by Merle. His voice isn’t sad, or angry, it’s just defeated.
“When’d ya finish the boat?”
Davenport shrugs. “Week ago.”
“Huh,” Merle says. He takes a swig out of the bottle before passing it to Davenport, who takes it without complaint. “How long you gonna be gone?”
“I d-don’t know, Merle,” Davenport sighs. He readjusts, leaning back so he can see higher in the sky. “A while.”
“Hey, Dav?” Merle asks, voice thick with something melancholy.
“Yeah?”
“What if you didn’t go?” Davenport turns, expecting to see a joke on Merle’s face but the dwarf is completely serious. Merle turns to meet his eye. The corner of his mouth lifts, as if he’s attempting a smile that he doesn’t have the strength to finish. “I mean, the kid’s will miss you, y’know?”
“Merle,” Davenport tries, “I-I, l-look, I don’t h-have a choice.”
“‘Course you do,” Merle sits up. “You always have.”
Davenport shakes his head. “I haven’t i-in a while.”
Merle turns to him, and Davenport was always amazed by moments like this, where instead of pity he would receive such sympathy from Merle.
“I should’ve phrased that better,” Merle chuckles.
Davenport shrugs, sitting up and hugging his knees to his chest. “Y-you don’t hav-have to censor yourself ar-around me. I’m f-fine.”
There’s a hush between them, before Merle scoots a little closer.
“I’d miss you, okay?” Merle admits, voice uncharacteristically soft. “I mean, who’d I play cards with?” Merle tries again, more playful this time and less… honest. About what, Davenport doesn’t know, but his response before sounded almost like a confession.
“You’ll be f-fine,” he tries instead of thinking more on what Merle could mean. “The k-kids are getting p-pretty good.”
Merle sighs. “Yeah, they are, aren’t they, those pieces of shit. Pretty soon Mookie’s gonna figure out how to cheat.”
Davenport chuckles at that. “He’ll h-have learned th-that from you.”
Merle grins. “I’m just teaching my kids about what matters.”
Davenport rolls his eyes. “You’re j-just as bad as T-Taako.”
Merle gasps, his hand flying to his chest. “Hey, I’m offended!” He calls out, barely being able to stop himself from giggling.
Davenport looks back at Merle and he smiles. “I-I’m gonna miss you, t-too.”
Merle smiles softly before lying down on the roof again. Davenport joins him, inches away, the closest physically he’s been to Merle in a while.
“I w-wish you could come, could c-come with me,” Davenport admits.
“I’m not leaving,” Merle says. “I left once and I’d rather not push my luck, y’know?”
“O-of course, M-Merle. I’m n-not asking you to, to d-do that.”
Merle turns so he’s facing the gnome, and Davenport turns as well. They’re inches away from each other. Davenport can see the flecks of green in Merle’s brown eyes.
“Whenever you need a place to stay, crash from adventuring, you can always stay here,” Merle says, eyes too serious.
“I know,” Davenport promises.
Merle nods. He starts to get up, but Davenport grabs his hand.
“What’s up, buddy?” Merle asks.
“I’m n-not leaving right n-now,” Davenport says. He doesn’t know what he’s doing, only that he doesn’t want Merle to leave. “Stay with m-me.”
Merle smiles and sits back down, groaning dramatically as he lowers himself to the ground.
They spend the night into the early morning like that, talking, laughing, inches away.
hi, i went looking at the drive for episode 32 and it says that i can't view it because the document is in violation of the terms and services? is the doc just,, gone?
Don’t worry! The transcript is still there, Google claims it has been “flagged as inappropriate and can no longer be shared.” I’ve requested a review of the document, which I don’t believe is actually in violation of any terms of service. Hopefully they’ll unblock it soon. If not, I’ve downloaded a copy and I’ll just reupload it and change the links.
For now, here is a published view-only version of the episode 32 transcript.
Thank you, and thank you also to curiousrei and azelmathenardier, for letting us know about this issue!
However, if Google is going to arbitrarily cut off access to our transcripts, this does give us another reason to export the documents elsewhere. I’m in favor of adding them to the Adventure Zone wikia, personally. But I would like to hear from our volunteers. I’m a volunteer myself, but the transcription I’ve done is just a drop in the bucket compared to the overall effort. Volunteers, it’s your work, so if you have opinions about where it should or shouldn’t end up, please do let us know.
