Hot Rod in Transformers: Deviations (2016)
So I just got done reading Transformers: Deviations. I’ll give my thoughts rather briefly for now:
If you’re someone who hates Hot Rod with a passion, you’re gonna love this comic. If not, then you won’t.
You know something cool Transformers: Deviations could have done?
Since the comic was an AU of the animated movie, in the original cartoon's universe, it could have been cool to feature some of the Autobots in the cartoon who didn't have toys. Like Elita-1 and her band of robot ladies and Devcon. So many Autobots died in the comic, more than the movie - so it might have softened the blow if like Devcon got to rescue Hot Rod, or if Optimus left Elita-1 and her team in charge of Autobot City, since he was going to press the advantage of Megatron's death. Plus since Arcee died in the comic, it would have been nice for other robot ladies to show up, even if they just filled in the background as combatants. That make sense?
Welp.. Read 'Transformers Deviations' and was met with exactly what I had expected from it. Absolutely nothing. As short as the issue was, I can tell you that I'm not even certain what the point of it being published actually is.. As it was, being introduced as a "what if Optimus Prime hadn't died" from the infamous fight between he and Megatron from the movie of 1986, it really only turns out as shallow as the preempt plot behind it. There was no zeal to the characters, no endearing substance, or honestly anything of captivating quality that would make it worth reading. A simple throwback and poor homage to the original.. This issue wasted an opportunity, what little use it may have had to begin with, and squandered over it with thoughtless writing choices that added nothing worthwhile to the series or development to the characters portrayed within it, even for an AU. Character interactions alone and how they tie in with the plot is so loosely held together in a way that hardly makes sense or seems to have any lick of reasoning behind it. They show up, things happen, minimal dialogue of any substance or insight to why and how what's going on is even happening. There is no why, following nothing but the age old "good vs evil" spiel into an un-calculated oblivion. Starscream(or Megascream) in particular is written so devoid of any personality components besides the flattest of tropes you would prescribe to him. He is thrown in as nothing more than the simple "evil, wants to kill all the autobots and rule Cybertron". Nothing else. Now I know a lot of you think that's all there is to ol' Screamer, but please spare me your misery. I expect to see more depth. Optimus Prime on the other hand, though just as depthless, goes a bit of a different route in an attempt to possibly show a darker side to the benevolent autobot leader in his opening act.. which I'll admit, failed in form of any shock value in my opinion, but will leave it at just that. The only character we really see any hint of thought in might just be Hot Rod to be completely honest.. even though I myself don't like his character(which I'm happy to add was treated quite poorly by his.. friends, heh). Alas he is the only one in this issue who seems to be experiencing thoughts and feelings in comparison to how the other characters were all portrayed. I mean this in the slimmest of ways however unfortunately, as his role in this falls through to end up just as dry as the others. Now, the ending.. Oh brother, I don't even know how to address it.. The ending was brought down upon us in a swift and completely underwhelming fashion similar to how this issue ever so graciously started and made the least bit of sense (seriously, what was up with that?). It was presented with the same amount of sheer uneventfulness of the entire comic and wrapped it up in about 5 seconds with, you guessed it, no real explanation other than some good old matrix magic. Wonderful. Transformers Deviations.. I give a 3/10 At least the art was good.
