So you’ve probably heard of art therapy, but what is the transpersonal part of it?
Transpersonal art therapy is a recognised form of therapy that uses the creative arts (painting, clay, movement, painting, drawing, etc) as a language to express our thoughts, emotions and feelings. It merges psychology, creativity and spirituality in a counselling context.
The word ‘transpersonal’ literally means ‘beyond the person.’ This means when we take a transpersonal approach we are looking beyond the labels and conditioning (ego) of an individual.
In its entirety, transpersonal art therapy is a holistic approach that focuses on the health of the body, mind, emotions, soul and spirit. It does not diagnose or label the individual but rather works to empower them to find resources within to live a life of meaning and purpose.
It endeavors towards a more integrated sense of self, with increased self-awareness and acceptance.
Have you ever tried a transpersonal based therapy before? What was your experience?
