Orientations in Astrology
The Orientations of the signs and houses in Astrology is a method to look at a native’s attitude towards life.
...How they generally approach life and how they react to their environment. They are how we “meet” the world. Orientations correlate with the evolution of the twelve astrological signs. The three orientations are:
1. Stage 1: Personal
The first four signs of the zodiac [Aries, House 1, Taurus, House 2, Gemini, House 3, Cancer, House 4]
This orientation relates to birth or infancy. Essentially, an infant/newborn's primary focus is getting their basic needs met: food, clothing, warmth, personal contact. It only knows itself since its mother and, as a result, is the center of the universe. Its sole purpose is to assure its state of wellness and survival. You have the capacity to be autonomous, self-assured, and independent, and a good self-starter when a majority of personal planets and/or houses fall into this orientation.
2. Stage 2: Interpersonal
The next four signs of the zodiac [Leo, House 5, Virgo, House 6, Libra House 7, Scorpio, House 8]
Once the “infant” matures, it stops seeing itself as the center of the world and becomes aware of others/their peers. They realize others have legitimate needs that match their own. They begin to socialize. In this stage, the "infant” AKA the Native, becomes a social individual, learning to interact with a wide network of people. People with the majority of these planets in these signs or planets in these houses have the capacity to become social phenoms, great networkers, and have a deep understanding of how people and their minds work.
3. Stage 3: Transpersonal
The final four signs of the zodiac [Sagittarius, House 9, Capricorn, House 10, Aquarius, House 11, Pisces, House 12]
In this final stage, the fully realized “adult” seeks to understand their relationship with the world and the cosmos as a whole. They begin accepting their physical mortality and find a more spiritual connection. Their perspective has widened and broadened to include everybody, everywhere, all the time. They can relate to anyone, at anytime, anywhere, who expresses universal truths. Qualities that are rather abstract and universal are understood here. The last signs have the capacity to go beyond individuated self-conscious altogether and achieve cosmic consciousness or a higher state of realization
Like all astrological qualities [i.e elements and modes], the orientations can demonstrate both benefic and malefic traits.
Ex:
An exaggeration of the Personal
Orientation will result in a person who becomes selfish and egotistical. They can even be narcissistic in nature. Those deficient in this orientation have a difficult time fulfilling their rudimentary survival needs. They may be too self-centered or unstable and as a result, may develop self-destructive habits in these areas. This is what is also termed as “under-developed or shadow-traits” in the signs.
An exaggeration of the Interpersonal
Orientation results in a person who may become too “other-directed.” They may do too much for others at the expense of themselves. A lack of strong or harmonious aspects in this orientation can result in a person who has been denied human contact either by themselves or others. This will result in losing touch with their own sense of self and they may seek validation or too much acceptance through others usually resulting in self-esteem issues and co-dependency issues. They can become terribly dependant on others.
An exaggeration of the Transpersonal
Orientation may result in a person who is lost in space. Out of touch with the tangible. People who daydream maladaptively. A person who is so concerned with the meaning of life that they forget about taking care of practical matters like feeding the cat or paying their light bill. Conversely, this can also result in a person who lacks any knowledge of spirituality in their life and cannot get in touch with their crown or 3rd eye chakras. The miss spiritual queues or blatant signs because they are disconnected from it.
Do you have a majority of your planets in Personal, Interpersonal, or Transpersonal signs and/or houses? Figuring this out can help you see if you have a predisposition to a certain temperament or certain habits natally.
