FFO's Turntable: Sevens
Based out of Vancouver, B.C., The Tranzmitors play a classic blend of power pop described as being reminiscent of Elvis Costello. I say "described as" because "I See the Writing On the Wall" is far from something I typically listen to. This record is a catchy throwback to pop music you'd expect to hear in the 60's, with a slight tinge of classic punk. I appreciate that a label like React - mostly known for their youth crew revival sound - decided to put this single out. Even if the A & B-side labels are reversed.
When I first heard their demo 2004, I hardly thought I'd be seeing the Dan Yemin-influenced love child known as Shook Ones still playing 9 years later. It's been great seeing them grow out of simple Lifetime-worship and into a full-fledged group; and I've greatly enjoyed all of the music it's brought along the way. "Merriweather Post Pavilion" is a two-song single, showcasing the matured sound Shook Ones have embraced in the last few years since "Facetious Folly Feat". Even better, is the band's follow up to the contents of "Order Form" with the B-side "Fancy".
Combining elements of metallic hardcore with 90's alternative rock, Tacoma's Wreck bring their 6131 debut to the table in the form of "Nervous Wreck". Although only 4 songs in length, this 7" shows a wide variety in styles; bringing to mind the likes of Helmet and Trapped Under Ice. I'm sure that sounds like a weird combo, but it's something you need to hear for yourself. Unfortunately the band has slowed down a bit in the last year or so, and I can only hope that changes with time.
Based out of Olympia, WA, Grimace was a hardcore punk band infusing elements of powerviolence. "Mustard Gas & Roses" is heavily reminiscent of groups like Violent Minds, Waste Management, and even early Think I Care. It's not so much the band's music that really sticks out with me as it is their lyrics; ranging from biting social commentary within the music community, to the folly's of the penal system & government spending. However, in true, disappointing punx fashion, Grimace called it quits before seeing the proper release of this 7".
