Trapunto Quilting

Trapunto, from the Italian word for "to quilt", is a method of quilting that is also called "stuffed technique".  Trapunto is a quilting technique that creates a raised, decorative design by stuffing fabric layers with batting or yarn. 

Unlike 'normal' quilting, where two layers of fabric have a layer of wadding between them and are stitched through all the layers, Trapunto uses two layers of fabric and the stuffing is only placed in defined areas, after all the stitching is complete. This creates a raised, decorative design.

When I was 17 I started hanging out in West Hollywood, the gay mecca of Los Angeles. There were bars and boutiques and gift shops that had the gloss of a burgeoning liberated community. I discovered postcards from a company named paper moon, illustrated by Mel Odom. The characters in his drawings had the heroic art deco classicism of gods and goddesses in Alfred Janniot art deco bas reliefs. Only years later did I realize the subject of one of my favorite images was wearing a satin jacket in Larry’s signature trapunto quilting. • Rick Owens

And now for something completely different! Another piece from my apprenticeship. This is Italian and trapunto quilting. The trapunto part is the main body of the monkey, you stitch a shape on two layers of fabric then slash the back of it and stuff it from behind.
