I’d like to take a moment to open up a discussion about our trash: when does something become “our trash”? Of course something that we purchase for ourselves and throw away is our own trash; we should take responsibility for that. But what about other things? -What if someone buys you a gift that’s wrapped in plastic? Is that your trash because it was bought for you, even though you didn’t directly support it? -What if you share someone’s food that comes in packaging, does that become your trash too? -What if someone gives you food that’s about to go bad, but it’s in packaging? Is it your trash because you’ve accepted it, or is it theirs because they purchased it? -Essentially, my big question is: what does and does not go into one's zero waste trash jar?
These are some questions I’ve asked myself a lot lately. When it came to the trash jar, I wasn’t sure what exactly constituted as “my trash”. Was it mine if I asked for no straw at a restaurant but the waiter accidentally put it in? I’m really interested in hearing your thoughts because I’m not totally sure about it myself. I was pleasantly surprised to see the lack of trash I produced during my big move this weekend. Essentially all the furniture and kitchen items were secondhand, and we even went to a reclamation store to buy one of our decorative pieces.
As you can clearly see, this is one big piece of plastic that won’t fit into my cute little trash jar. And after two months of being able to fit all of my trash into my little jar, I have to accept “defeat.” In the midst of moving apartments, I needed to buy a mattress and wasn’t comfortable purchasing a used one from someone I don’t know.
It’s frustrating because I’ve worked so hard to reduce my footprint, particularly in the last few months: -I’ve brought my reusable cutlery everywhere -I’ve refused lots of freebies -I’ve finished all my restaurant meals if I didn’t have a to-go container -I’ve made a conscious effort to bring home scraps and other things I can compost at home
And as someone who cares about transparency, I don’t want you all to think that I’m perfect because I’m not!
All of this just goes to show the inherent failure in our economy: the government and companies refuse to take responsibility for the single use disposables they use, and put it on us as the consumers to take care of it.
Today, I’m going to write an email to the mattress company and let them know about thoughts on their wasteful practices.
