something i love about trigun is that pretty early on you get this sense that the story is going to make vash kill. his pacifism is such a core part of him that the logical conclusion is the story is going to do its best to break him of that

the next logical assumption if youre new to trigun is that hes gonna have to kill knives. knives is the big bad and hes emotionally connected to vash so it makes sense!

but then vash kills legato instead

it takes it from a theory of “oh hes gonna have to harden his resolve and kill his brother to make all the bad things stop” to a reality of “hes so desperate and cant see any other options so he finally breaks and kills someone”

theres no resolve to harden because hes already resolved not to kill and hes not willingly changing that value of his any time soon, if at all. the only reason he kills at all is because hes desperate

and it wrecks him!! as it should!! hes so scared and desperate and cant think of anything else and yet he still is a wreck after the fact because he did not have any intention of killing until he hit that point of desperation and even in the moment he didnt want to

and it would be easy for the story to jump from there and be like “well hes killed once, now hes prepared to do it again to take out knives” but it doesnt!!! he actively chooses to pick himself up and choose peace yet again because those are still his values and theyre not changing and he still manages to win with them. killing is not the answer to the overall fight between him and knives

yes the story demands that vash kill someone, he needs to have his worldview shaken to truly understand those around him. but that someone has to be someone other than knives to truly get the point across

the story wouldnt be the same if vash killed knives. it just wouldnt

A quote from Doctor Who that kept resonating with me about Tristamp Meryl. Not to yuck anyone's yum, but Tristamp Meryl caught my heart in a way that just never clicked with me when I used to try to get into 98 when it was being syndicated when I was a kid. I love Trimstamp Meryl as this avatar of humanity who also manages to be her own person with quirks and flaws who is just trying so hard.

Why geraniums specifically?

Okay, so why exactly geraniums? Why not roses or tulips or something? What themes or ideas are brought to the table by the use of this motif?

Firstly, there's what's told to us in the manga. "In the language of flowers, the geranium stands for determination." A quick check from Wikipedia will tell us that this is indeed the case, alongside a number of meanings, some of which could even be considered to also match Vash or Rem if you squint - confidence, folly, and for red geraniums specifically, stupidity - think à la The Fool tarot card in pop culture, where what can be considered stupid by conventional society could also contain wisdom. There's also the meaning of 'deceit', which you could potentially connect with Vash's mysterious nature or Rem holding the secret of Tesla with her but ehhhhh, that's even more of a stretch. I think it's safe to say here that 'determination' is the main takeaway here for geraniums specifically, but then we have to ask well, why are we using flowers as a motif in the first place?

This one's a bit more open. A lot of it fits with Rem being the dead mother figure (tm), because flowers tend to be a very feminine symbol. If you've ever studied classical literature you might have stumbled across the idea of flowers being a yonic symbol (looks like vaganga haha).

It's more of a thing with something like roses given the cup-like shape, with scarlet geraniums being much more spread out, but connection is still something to keep in the back of your head.

Consider the in-universe context also. Plant life is already considered something fragile and precious and in a world of giant metal spaceships and unending and, even more so. Rem herself very much embodies this concept - she's remembered fondly and as a vibrant person, but her actual existence in the story is fleeting. Soft petals cannot live in the desert. And Vash, though somewhat immortal, is similarly precious, a phantom of the impossible in this world - hope and peace - on the wind.

There's also the consideration for red geraniums specifically. Red is many things; passion, fury and strength. But when I think of the colour red in Trigun, I tend to think of two things, especially in Stampede: Humanity and blood. Consider also that one of Vash's most identifying features is his crimson coat, which is even long and wavy like petals. Naturally then, Vash carries allllllll the connotations discussed here - he is determination, he is blood, he is life.

Which if you wanted to extend it even further; if flowers are often considered yonic, feminine and a symbol of life, then the geraniums in Stampede may not just be solely invoking blood in general but also placental and menstruation tissue. And I mean I have already drawn parallels between the yonic horror in Stampede and the same in Bloodbourne. I don't exactly expect Vash to start pissing out geranium petals or something in future episodes of Stargaze, but I wouldn't be shocked if we get something to that effect.
