Batman: Dark Patterns #7
GAH
Jorge Fornes and Triona Farrell.
Bruce: Pareidolia is the name for how we perceive patterns where there are none. Seeing faces in clouds, or the man in the moon. Bruce: The first thing we have to be able to recognize as infants is other people. The faces of our caregivers. To return a smile, to be able to bond and be protected. Bruce: It means that part of our minds can become overactive. It's led to so many of our myths, our legends and gods. Bruce: Part of being a detective is being able to see past that pareidolia. To not be fooled by patterns that are not there. To not assign malevolence to nature or coincidence. Bruce: But tonight there is another fire in Gotham.... - Batman: Dark Patterns #7
I also love this page - the smiling faces in Bruce's bloody bandages and his ice water as he's explaining pareidolia? the sharp, shadowed look at a smouldering Gotham as he's going on about not being fooled by it? the synergy between the writing and the art is so good ugh
I'm always in awe of the paneling in Batman: Dark Patterns and issue 10 was no exception:

Textless panel from Batman: Dark Patterns #1
If you like some of the more twisted and gritty Batman stories, you should definitely give Batman: Dark Patterns a shot. Written by Dan Watters and illustrated by Hayden Sherman, this 12-issue mini series will follow four cases from Bruce's early (pre-Robin) days as Batman.
I'm already hooked from the first issue. The second releases today and I am so excited to read it. With Nightwing and Detective Comics-- and now this-- Watters is a DC writer I'll absolutely be following closely.
