How The Guys From Generation Kill Would React To Watching The Bachelor With You
Brad Colbert: Silent judgment the whole time. He'd sit there stoically, arms crossed, occasionally making dry, cutting remarks like, "That's a tactical mistake," when someone gives a bad rose ceremony speech. Secretly gets invested but refuses to admit it.
Ray Person: He lives for this kind of drama. He'd be yelling at the screen, making up nicknames for all the contestants, and placing fake bets on who's going home. Drinks beer, eats all of your snacks, and brings chaos. "Bro! This is fucking nuts! She is giving red flag energy!"
Doc Bryan: Watches it like a psychology case study. Offers deep analysis of the sontestants' behavior and how they probably have attachment issues. "This is a textbook example of insecure-avoidant dynamics"
Nate Fick: Tries to act like he's too mature for it, but ends up actually caring and asking, "Wait, didn't she already tell him she loved him? How's he saying that to someone else?" Gets emotionally involved by week 3.
Rudy Reyes: Is 100% here for the love story. He's spiritually connected to the journey and keeps talking about "energy" and "alignment." Probably tears up during the final rose.
Trombley: Doesn't really get what's going on. Asks random questions like, "So do they get to kill each other or what?" You just stare at him wondering if you should be worried or not and eventually make him run out to get take out so he doesn't make any more weird comments.
Gunny: Sits off to the side, pretending he does't care. Complains it's a "waste of time" but is somehow always there. Occasionally grumbles things like, "This is what's wrong with America," right before asking, "Wait, he picked him?"
Walt: Surprisingly thoughtful insights. Gets real quiet during emotional moments and occasionally hits you with, "Damn, that was actually kind of deep." Secretly roots for the underdog girl and won't admit it until the finale.
Q-Tip: Low-key stylish, totally into the fashion and vibes. Makes hilarious side commentary like, "That low cut dress? That's a tactical choice." Ruthlessly judges bad outfits and fake personalities. Keeps a mental list of who's "fake as hell" and who's "wifey material." Probably says, "She's not here for the right reasons," before anyone else does.
Evan Wright: Starts out watching like he's just taking notes for a sociological study. But after like one beer, he's yelling, "Oh COME ON, SHE DESERVES BETTER!" with you. Gives sharp commentary on production manipulation. "You can feel the producer's fingerprints all over this two-on-one date." Accidentally becomes the most emotionally invested.
Manimal: Maximum chaos. He is that guy who lives to stir the pot. He's loud, opinionated, and completely unpredictable. Every time someone gets eliminated, he yells, "Waste of a slot!" He also would try to start a drinking game with rules like "sip every time someone says 'vulnerable'." Has zero filter and will say things like "She's got red flag energy, bro, she's gonna burn your house down."
(Just a little something I put together quickly while I keep working on my request queue. Hope you all enjoy!)

You did not mean to fall in love with Walt Hasser. But like many things, it has slowly crept on you, until one day, when you were laughing your ass off with him somewhere in the middle of the Iraqi dessert and he put his hand on your shoulder like he’s done so many times before, something changed.
You did not mean to fall in love with your best friend. Until you just did.
i think the real beauty of Generation Kill, compared to Band of Brothers and The Pacific, is that it’s not set up with beautiful shots or epic scores or in any way tries to glorify and honor the people who were a part of OIF or the Iraq War. the beauty of GK lies in its humanity and that’s why it wasn’t received well by the general public.
the thing is, the beauty of GK lies in the humanity it brings to the Recon Marines. it shows the general public what these people, who were trained to be killing machines, actually love and care for and value in their lives. it shows how they still sing (Ray) how serious they can be (Brad and Nate) and it shows just how different each of these people are. it shows how different people take their fuck-ups in the war and addresses each of them in different manners (Trombley when he shoots the kid on the camel, doesn’t have to do a write up and his actions for shooting a civilian are only addressed by his fellow marines, not by higher-ups; Walt making a call that almost all of them were prepared to make, “if you weren’t going to take the shot i was”, and him having a whole arc over that within two episodes and having to do a write up and we never see Walt exactly the same afterwards).
GK doesn’t attempt to glorify the Iraq War, in any way, shape, or form. It simply doesn’t. multiple characters address why they shouldn’t be there, that the war is unnecessary, that they’re just doing their jobs because they felt like they had to, how some of them aren’t going to reenlist, and it shows that they hate the war as much as everyone watching it go down. Though these guys have been trained to be absolute killing machines, they’re still humans. They make mistakes. They face the repercussions of their actions in some form or another, each in different ways.
Now, why did a show perfectly portraying the way Marines spoke, ate, acted, and did while still giving them a sense of humanity and reasons to sympathize with them not get received well by the general public? Because that’s not what they wanted. It’s the same reason Jarhead wasn’t received well. The general public didn’t want to watch GK because it didn’t have the action they had been promised with shows like BoB and movies like Saving Private Ryan. It didn’t have the men making tough but precise calls for the betterment of the company, it instead had the higher-ups making shitty and incompetent calls that aren’t for the betterment of the company or the war at all.
They even attempted to glorify the war in the show, but they showed that it just doesn’t work. The only person left watching the documentary Lilly put together is Trombley, and that’s because he actually thinks that they’re doing the right thing. He doesn’t feel sorry for what he did to the kid on the camel. The only man left watching is a fucking sociopath, unafraid to watch Lilly’s documentary because he doesn’t feel any remorse for his actions or the actions of his Battalion. He’s representative of the people who went into GK who thought that the war was necessary, no matter what actions were taken. He’s the general public, who have glorified war after war after war without realizing the consequences each of those wars and how they affected the people involved.
Sorry, this is getting to be a rant, I could do a whole video essay on this.
TLDR; GK wasn’t received by the general public well like BoB and The Pacific because it shows the humans behind a war.
