I watched the beginning of the first episode of Generation Kill because of you but I am not seeing what's so great about it. Band of Brothers was fantastic but this one is nothing but offensive and controversial; is it worth finishing?
Yes.
But don’t bother trying if the strongly un-PC content makes you uncomfortable (this is the real world). If it’s just the explosions and beeping that puts you off, hold on for a bit longer because you eventually kind of get used to it, like in BoB.
Personally I loved it and I could go on for ages about how good I found it, but to specify what makes the series unique as a modern era war show, here are the main points:
the time the events took place makes itself relevant in terms of contemporary American culture and society including class and race issues, pop culture and the relationship between young people and international politics
the story doesn’t condemn or justify what took place in Iraq, or what any of the characters did- it simply tells what happened
the book itself is a first person narrative from a civilian perspective that was produced soon after the events took place, so it’s a very accurate and complete account
one of the actors wrote a piece about why/how working on the show with actual marines changed him, and that wartime character development is what HBO War is known for portraying
Additionally, the acting/cinematography is fantastic (a lot of them are again recognizable in other works) and it’s not too long. (6 out of 7 episodes are directed by a woman, which is even better.) It’s really gritty because of the realism (the poor lighting and stuff isn’t Zack Snyder extreme, but there are bits that are kind of unclear), and if you’re trash like me, a lot of the monologues are rather amusing.
Wartime camaraderie isn’t dead because the dramatic horn music has been replaced by hip hop, or because a lot of people disagree with the validity of the war these people were fighting in.
[THIS. I’ve always told people, if you watch this show and can’t get past the way they talk to each other, you just don’t get it. Simple. Military speak will never not be ‘offensive’. That is the nature of the military and the way they express their camaraderie. Those men will call each other every colourful name in the book but at the end of the day will die for each other. If you ever speak with someone that was involved in this war, they will tell you (including the actual members involved in the show) how right Gen Kill got it.

this dude is a dog man and is three seconds away from punching Trombley because all Trombley wants to do is shoot dogs
he definitely feeds the stray dogs some of his MRE
he never wears cologne but has a certain musk to him
he smells like pine, old spice, and cinammon
his hands are rough and calloused because before he joined the marines he worked as a farmhand on a ranch
his grandma actually owns the ranch, and his favorite thing to do there is take care of the horses
Walt can only flirt when he’s drunk, and even then, he’s still terrible at it
he blushes like crazy if anyone gives him a compliment
the backs of his ears look like they’re on fire, his face and neck get all flushed
he’s the type of person to accidentally walk in on you naked and then start stuttering like crazy before quickly shutting the door again
i feel like he didn’t know how to swim before the marine corps (idk why i feel like he didn’t know BUT DON’T QUESTION IT-)
hands down believes that the chili mac MRE is the best MRE
his whole family was surprised he joined the marines because he’s not confrontational AT ALL (they supported him nonetheless)

this man is 100% enamored with you
he gushes about you to Poke and all the other guys whenever they ask how you’re doing
(as seen in the gif) he likes it when you spray perfume on your letters to him, it reminds him of home and the way your bed smells
if you’re in the marines: i feel like you guys aren’t in the same company but you could potentially be transferred into the same battalion
i don’t think Walt is necessarily in a rush to get married like some of the other marines, but if you wanted to get married he would do it in a heartbeat
i feel like he prefers living more of a domestic life
plans on leaving the marines one day to settle down with you and have kids

i feel like he’s a good cook (he’s no Gordon Ramsay but he can cook simple meals so he’s already got a headstart on many Marines trust me)
i don’t picture him as a big PDA type of person
i do think that he enjoys light PDA though
hand holding, soft pecks, forehead kisses, maybe an arm slung around your waist, etc.
but along with all the happy things, you’re gonna have some bad times
you guys do fight every once in a while
whenever he can’t stop thinking about the war, he pushes himself away from you because he feels like he’s holding you back
he’s actually tried to break up with you a few times because he thinks he’s holding you back and that you have so much potential that you aren’t using because you’re with him
and this pisses you off
because you want to be there for him but he won’t let you
just give him some time, maybe an hour or two, and then try cuddling with him
if he relaxes into your touch, he’s still upset, but he won’t be irrational and will actually talk about his problems like an adult instead of trying to leave you
you’re going to have to be patient with him, he’s been through a lot
no matter what though, you two will be there for each other
if you get pregnant, this man will cry
not sad tears, VERY happy tears

he’s so excited
but he’s also really scared
he doesn’t want to mess up his kid

The cast of Broadway's American Idiot marked the musical's 10-year anniversary milestone with a ’21 Guns’ performance.
American Idiot opened on Broadway on April 20, 2010 — 10 years ago today — and while social distancing measures mean the cast can’t celebrate together in person, they still couldn’t resist gathering (virtually) to salute to the musical’s decade milestone.
Members of the original Broadway cast including John Gallagher Jr., Rebecca Naomi Jones, Michael Esper, Christina Sajous, Mary Farber, Stark Sands, and more all joined together for some initial greetings and chit-chat (catching up via video, just like the rest of us!) before launching into a gorgeous rendition of “21 Guns,” complete with some of the original hand choreography.
