Viroconium Mosaic Tiles
I've been reading lately Roger White's and Philip Barker's amazing book about Roman Wroxeter (a.k.a. Viroconium) - and one of the cool things about it was that it included a reconstruction painting of the mosaic tiles discovered in the baths basilica. Remember that build I shared some five weeks ago? The basilica is that long, tall building in the back. Obviously, I immediately thought that it'd be amazing to turn that painting into tiles I could use to decorate the interior. Or into carpets. Or even both, why not...?
And so I did. All the original patterns were hand-painted by me (in blender, cause I'm quirky that way 😉), baked, and the resulting png files were turned into mosaics thanks to this AMAZING geometry node. Then they were baked again, this time to the plane I put behind them - so what you're getting is a highly detailed texture on a plane with four vertices instead of the original, beautiful, three-million-poly monstrosity 😅.
Whatever could work as a seamless texture was turned into tiles. The level of detail I went for originally turned out not to be enough for some of the later, more complex swatches, so I rebaked them all with more detail / smaller stones... But I kept the older versions - of the swatches which still looked good - anyway, just for the diversity. Here's a comparison: the same swatch with bigger or smaller mosaic stones:
Unfortunately, I had to increase the texture resolution in the process. While the bigger-stones-version uses 512x512 size, the one with the smaller stones requires already 1024x1024. Sorry!
The mosaics are also available as a carpet, which was cut into modular pieces so that it wouldn't fit only one specific build (my own 😛). They're all 3 tiles long; the width falls somewhere in between 1,5 and 3 tiles. No matter how wide they are in game, the textures are 1024x2048 big. So a bit better than the small-stone-tiles.
The original order of the carpet pieces is given in the in-game descriptions. You can easily make them nicely fit next to each other if you activate quarter-tile-placement with the F5 key. And obviously they behave as carpets, meaning your sims can walk on them:
They also have some positive environment score. Not suuuper high - your sims won't get ecstatic just because there's a single mosaic piece in the room - but if you use a couple of them, they should get the 'nicely decorated' buff:
Same applies to the tiles.
