Picked up vol 1 and 2 of Tsugumi Project at the not-so-local weeb store (manga and figurines) and like. On the back it suggests that you'll like it if you liked The Southern Reach Trilogy, which like. Ok if we're just going off it it being Zone fiction then yes, it is somewhat similar to Area X.

HOWEVER.

The Summer Hikaru Died is RIGHT THERE.

Like, Ultimately the Area X books are about weird uncanny alien nature shit but they are also very much about like, our sense of self, our relationships to other people, how you never really understand another person. It's about identity, it's about fear, it's about loss of control, it's about being more comfortable looking into a tide pool than speaking to your estranged husband. It's about being completely out of your element when you've given a task too herculean to understand and there's a plant in it in your desk drawer and you don't know why.

And like. I am enjoying the Tsugumi Project but this manga is seinen, yes it has the gorgeous derelict city-scape and yes it's about being lost in it and yes it's about the unknown! But it's also about beating up monsters with other monsters who are your friends, and while that's frankly cool as shit it does not an Area X make, you feel me?

I will be picking up more, I love me some zone fiction and the art slaps, but if you want a proper Southern Reach vibes manga then I feel the slow, creeping dread of The Summer Hikaru Died to be more compelling. What with the grief and identity problems and all.
