The bus was filled with the chattering of volleyball players, somehow energetic at 6 o'clock in the morning. You find a spot next to Hinata who has apologized about a million times since he hit you. Of course you forgave him, he’s one of the nicest guys on the team.
You pull back one ear of your headphones so you can listen to what people are saying. Fishing out your computer, you bring up the article you were working on. You have till tomorrow to submit it but you want to do some exploring before the competition so you’re trying to get it done now.
Tsukishima moves down the aisle, pausing at your seat “Hey Tsukishima. Good morning.”
Things had been…odd to say the least. He’ll still walk you home, but only when Yama is there. Sometimes, very rarely, he’ll bring you a snack from the vending machine. When you swear you can’t go on with the day, he’s there with a chip or candy bag.
It’s weird how he seems to know exactly when you need a pick-me up.
The blonde huffs and slides into the seat directly behind you. Turning around so you could see him you ask “What? Too polite to answer?” He rolls his eyes “Jesus, good morning. Are you happy?”
“Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?” You snark. He just puts on his headphones and stares out the window. A part of you is hurt at the blunt dismissal, used to the constant back and forth he brings to your life.
“Nevermind I guess.” Slumping back into your seat, you turn up your music and try to concentrate on writing your piece.
You manage to write for a little while before your eyes keep dropping lower and lower, till eventually you give in. Putting away your laptop, you slide further down into your seat and let your lids slip shut.
A shake of your shoulder. As you blink open your eyes, you realize it's dark out and the lights of a hotel are refracting into the bus. A pair of amber eyes look into yours.
“You fell asleep.” “Did I?” You mumble, feeling the scratch of your voice more than hearing it. Clearing your throat you sit up. “Shit is everyone inside?” Tsukishima nods in response.
For a brief moment you stare at each other in silence. He had waited. You don’t know for how long or why but you do know, somewhere deep in your bones, that he waited. “Are you going to move or just stare like an idiot…?” And he ruined it.
“Yeah, yeah, I'm moving.” You mutter, grabbing your duffel bag.
“There you guys are.” Kiyoko huffs, standing next to Daichi. Though you didn’t know Kiyoko very well, you admired the way she kept all the boys in line and how much passion she had. You were hoping to get an interview with her during the tournament.
Daichi hands you both key cards “Since you two were last off the bus, you get the last room. Are you both alright sharing a room?” Tsukishima makes a face. You can’t tell what he’s thinking.
“Do I have too?” Oh, he doesn’t want to share a room with you. You didn’t want to either but it was a little insulting to be rejected so outright. Kiyoko sighs “It’ll be hard,” She turns to you “Because of the uneven ratio of boys to girls, you’d have to share with a boy anyways.”
At that, the blonde makes a face you can read: disgust. “Fine. Fine, I’ll share with her. Better me than anyone else.”
Daichi raises his eyebrows but doesn’t comment. Kiyoko nods “Good! I’m glad it worked out.” As you two walk away, the captain calls to Tsukishima "Remember! Bright and early tomorrow!”
Tsukishima nods crisply in response.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Honestly, the universe must be laughing at you. Someone has to be enjoying this rather cruel prank. Because you are certainly not. “Shit. I can talk with Kiyoko. We can’t…there’s no way we are sharing a bed.”
A twinge of annoyance shoots through you, adding to the already rankled state you were in. “It’s too late for that. You take the floor.” He looks at you insulted “What? Why should I take the floor? I'm the athlete here!”
You roll your eyes “Please, get off your high horse.” “My horse is a perfectly normal size. I am taking the bed.” “No you are not!” You settle yourself in the middle of the mattress. Tsukishima fixes you with a stern look. “Move.”
“No.” It takes a minute but you can tell you’ve broken down his defenses “I’ll sleep on the floor.” He mutters. At least one good thing came out of this arrangement.
Throwing a pillow to him, you glance at the closet. “Want me to get you a blanket?” “I can get it myself thank you.”
Letting him set up his bed, you slip into the bathroom to change and brush your teeth. When you walk out, Tsukishima is stretched out on the floor. The low light casting his hair in a golden glow. Something twinges in you. You suppose it wouldn’t hurt to have him on the bed. He is right about needing to be at his best for tomorrow.
So with a heavy sigh, you gesture to him “Come up here.” He squints up at you. “What?” “You’re right. You should be on the bed.”
There's a pause, a thick silence settles over the room. “But you’re up there.” Jesus Christ. “Yes. Is that a problem?” Somehow an even thicker silence follows after that. “Are you scared, Tsukki?” Now, you could be wrong, but you swear in the dim light Tsukishima actually blushes.
He mumbles something. “What was that?” You ask.
“God! You’re so annoying.” Tsukishima climbs onto the bed, bringing his pillow and extra blanket. “Just stick to your side.” You roll over onto the right side of the bed. “Not a problem.”
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Apparently it is a problem. Because when you wake up, he’s practically on top of you. His breath fans against the crook of your neck with one of his surprisingly muscular arms wrapped gently around your waist.
You should probably get him up too. You find that you really don’t want to though.
So, for five minutes you let the blonde sleep peacefully. Then you free your arm (that has fallen asleep underneath him) and shake his shoulder. “Hey. Wake up.” Tsukishima lets out a truly dignified noise that you are totally not going to hold over him.
“Tsukki, it's time to get up.” You say with a little more force. His warm amber eyes blink open, for a second, he just stares at you. Then reality hits and he scrambles off the bed in a flurry of limbs and blankets.
“What were you- What was- What do you think you’re doing?” He spits out, face a spectacular shade of red. “What was I doing? Sleeping. You were doing your best impression of a blanket.”
“I was not!” You shrug, feigning nonchalance when inside you also wanted to freak out but you wouldn’t get anything done with two of you going insane “I know what I saw.”
Tsukishima stares at you, still beet red. You slip out of the bed and he casts his eyes up to the ceiling. Which would be sweet if you weren’t wearing full pajama pants and a loose t-shirt.
“I’m going to get ready, because I'm starving.” Tsukishima just nods mutely. You slip into the bathroom and sink down onto the cool tile. Jesus Christ. Your mind keeps turning over the warmth that he gave off and how his breath hit your skin and his arm-
Like some goddamn movie character, you have to splash water on your face to break out of that train of thought.
When you walk out, the blonde is waiting by the door dressed for practice and returned to his normal color. He raises his eyebrows “Ready?” “Ready.” You grab your bag and key.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
You stare at the blinking cursor, halfway through another go at your rough draft you try to find places you could improve. Being able to tune out the commands of practice is pretty easy but every once and awhile, a flash of blonde appears in the corner of your eye and suddenly all thoughts disappear except for him.
Which is really fucking annoying.
He had disappeared the minute you got to breakfast, grabbing Yama from his table and dragging him to some unknown place. The pair didn’t return till you all had to pack on the bus again for practice.
Hinata asked you to sit next to him again so you obliged but you swear Tsukishima was staring daggers at the back of the ginger's head the whole time. But you couldn’t be sure because every time you looked his way he stared out the window, very deliberately avoiding eye contact.
Kiyoko sits down primly next to you. You give her a nod of acknowledgement. “Are you enjoying observing the team? I’m sorry about the nose incident.” You laugh softly, turning your body more towards her.
“It’s really ok, barely felt it after the first day. I am enjoying it. I didn't think I would at first but this has been…an interesting experience.” She nods in satisfaction “And everyone’s being nice? Respectful?”
Something in her tone is different than it was a moment ago.
“Um..yeah, they have. Everyone was super welcoming, even though they had no reason to be, you know? I mean I was the one coming in with no experience and-” You snap your jaw shut and only relax when Kiyoko offers you a small smile of encouragement.
“That's good! I know some of them can be prickly.” She casts her eyes towards the court. “Especially Tsukishima.” “Shit!” You fumble with your laptop for a second, caught off guard by her comment.
A couple people glance your way, including the subject of the conversation himself. Kiyoko laughs softly “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to catch you by surprise. I was talking to him today and he seemed…out of sorts.”
He has been acting weird, and that was before this morning's wake up call. You had thought about it on the bus and only with Kiyoko's comment did you realize that other people had noticed it too.
He starts making his way over to you, leaving Kageyama sputtering in protest. You look over to Kiyoko for help to see her discreetly slipping away towards Daichi. Traitor.
Tsukishima calls your name and you smile tightly “What’s up?” “You’ll be at the game, right?” You nod “It’s sort of my job.” Normally, the blonde would take you up on the obvious bait but instead he just stares at you “I need to talk to you after.”
Then he turns on his heel and walks back to Kageyama, telling him to pick up the ball and keep going. Leaving you utterly confused.
Talk? About what? What could he possibly have to talk to you about?? Daichi calls a team huddle but you can barely hear him, frozen to the spot, mind spiraling. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, ta-
“Hey! You’re a part of the team too!” Daichi calls, breaking you out of your spiral. “Oh sorry!” You gather your stuff and squeeze in next to Yama a warmth rushing over you at the place you’ve been given with the group. It doesn’t last long though, when you meet Tsukishima’s eyes and are once again reminded: 'Can we talk?'
This has been a looooooong time in the making(read ever since this album came out) and well here ya go!

It starts slow. It always seems to start slow, like the rise of the sun on a cool morning, or a flower blooming on the right day. It’s also unrelenting once it becomes obvious, and yet that’s when it becomes the most painful.
Tsukishima Kei had always prided himself on knowing you the best. He would always brag about that to your best friends, your sibling, anyone you held dear. It wasn’t that he wanted to be overly cocky about it, it’s because he watched you carefully. How you would wake up with a little groan and try to pull yourself back under the covers. Or the way you would puff your cheeks when thinking too hard about sending a text. He admires and loves every single thing about you.
He loves the way you cling to him as he analyzes his own volleyball matches, as if you’re keeping him tethered to reality and not drowning in that world. And he knows you love it when he rubs his thumb along your skin, the lingering touches he would leave fluttering off your skin. It used to send your heart racing.
But now he barely gets a reaction from you.
“I have to work later,” you would say. “Sorry, I’m not in the mood.” That was the one that hurt him the most as touch and being intimate were some of the ways you received and gave love. “Kei, I just…” and some excuse would follow.
It was infuriating. Infuriatingly painful and heartbreaking for the once sarcastic and stoic man.
So he went on like you did, going to work, doing the chores, hanging out with friends, the same routine.
Until he couldn’t handle it anymore.
One night you had finally come home from an outing with your coworkers where Tsukishima sat at your junk mail filled table. His fingers are interlaced under his chin as his elbows rest on the table.
The blond is the first to break the awkward silence. “Three hours.”
You look at him with confusion as you place your shoes away. The happy hour you had gone to had turned into karaoke for two whole hours. Sure, you had meant to message your boyfriend, but you were having fun and wanted to save your battery life. You rest your hand on your chest to try and catch your breath. The air is heavy and is practically visible in the dim lighting.
His golden brown eyes hold a disdain you had seldom seen at the beginning of your relationship but had steadily grown to a more common occurrence. You take a deep breath, placing your bag in your seat. “Kei I’m sorry-“
You’re cut off by a sharp inhale and a roll of his eyes. Tsukishima clicks his tongue. “You always say sorry, but never follow up. You have your phone, right? A text would’ve sufficed.”
The seeds of anger begin to sprout and bloom in your chest into something grotesque. “If you’d let me speak, maybe I could say something!”
And that’s when the bomb finally goes off.
Tsukishima slams his hands against the table in frustration. “This is the most you’ve talked to me in weeks. I’ve tried everything in my power to get you to open up to me; I feel like an idiot!” He’s finally up to his full height, a trait that he’s never once used to intentionally intimidate you.
Any response you try to come up with gets jumbled and trapped in your throat. A cold shiver runs down your spine. As you stand there, your mind runs through all of your interactions with your boyfriend over the weeks. What have you been doing? Where have you been mentally? Your stomach drops as the scenes run through your head.
Dismissing his touch, avoiding him, rarely making eye contact with him. It all comes flooding back. You weren’t ready to face him. But now you have no choice. “I can explain,” you utter softly.
Tsukki’s voice comes out shaky and unrefined. “Can’t you just look at me?! I’ve been reaching out and I feel like I have nothing left. You treat me as if I have some disease by how little you touch me.”
“I, I thought it wouldn’t matter.”
“Oh please,” he scoffs, “you’re the only person I let touch me like you do. Can’t believe you would even think that. Don’t you know me?”
That’s when you hear it.
The crack in his usually stable tone. If you dare spare him a glance, you can see the hint of tears threatening to fall. It hits you like a knife to the gut, twisting the longer you stare. You place a light grip on your belly as your own tears cascade down your cheeks. “Of course I know you, Tsukki. I love you!”
“Can’t you see I love you?” His voice gets quieter as he begins to approach you. “Why have you-“
“I broke our promise!”
Tsukki stops in his tracks as he gazes at you quizzically. With his thumb and pointer finger he rubs at his furrowed eyebrows. “What the hell are you talking about, Chibi?”
You bite your lip nervously, teetering between your feet as you debate telling him the truth. The dishwasher runs through the rinse cycle as the lighting hums in the silence. Your throat clamps up and your breathing becomes shallow, as if the wind was knocked out of you. For a fleeting moment, your mind wanders to when you first walked in. Your rehearsed stumbling went out the window as soon as you saw your lovers fluffy tufts of hair. Any plans you had went out that same window.
You thanked whatever entity that he hadn’t bothered to check the trash cans in the house otherwise he should have been hounding you about that. In the fat corners of your mind, you’re thankful neither of you had taken the time to do the household chores. You take a deep inhale and tightly shut your eyes. “I-I’m pregnant.”
There is a gaping pause.
The air is tense as your announcement hangs in the air. Tsukki can’t think, can’t breathe. There is no way he heard what he heard. “Pipsqueak, what are you…?”
“We had said we didn’t want kids, right? And a month and a half ago we didn’t use protection and I was late so I wanted to check a-and-“
You’re interrupted in your rambling by being pulled into a sharp and tight hug. Between sniffles you bumble out, “K-Kei?”
His breathing is short and constricting as he hugs you. Fingertips grip tightly onto the back of your head in panic. His lips tremble, although only slightly. It’s harder to breathe as his throat seems to cave in on itself. Tsukishima’s ability to keep a relative poker face in any situation has given you the new skill of knowing when he’s stressed or worried. Right now, based off of his slowly dampening palms, racing heart, and shortness of breath, he’s all of that and something else you can’t quite name.
A stuttered breath comes from his lips as he finally releases you. His eyes are everywhere but yours, as if his own feelings are a moving target he is attempting to lock onto. His lithe fingers tremble as he covers his face, shoulders beginning to shake as he focuses his attention toward the ceiling. Your own stress begins to alleviate as a single tear treks down his cheek.
“Kei?” You softly whisper, hesitantly stepping forward.
“…idiot.” Tsukishima’s voice rumbles in his chest, overcome with emotion that has his knees wobbling. “I know…I know I said what I said. But damnit,” your lover finally gazes at you, golden irises rimmed red with unshed tears. Shaky and unsure fingers intertwine with yours as he forces the two of you to stare into each other's eyes. “Don’t push me away,” he breathes, “because of this.” His voice fades out as he places a gentle hand to your stomach.
In a moment of vulnerability, the blond drops his tough exterior he had prepared for this conversation. Fresh tears glimmer in your eyes that you try to blink away. Your jaw tightens, tensely and feebly holding back the want to cry. Sharp inhales prevent you from forming coherent words; Tsukishima cups your cheek with a smirk. “Breathe, Chibi. You’re overworking yourself again.” His voice is calm like spring rain dripping off of newly blossomed petals. You do as he says, inhaling purposefully and releasing, doing so a few times. His thumb swipes at a stray tear and gives you a soft smile. “Heh, can’t have you stressing out our baby can I?”
You blink rapidly at him, joy starting to form in the bottom of your heart. A chuckle escapes your throat as you continue to gawk at him. “You’re okay with this?”
“Tch, silly girl. I’d rather have a family with the woman I love,” he kisses your forehead, “than lose her forever.”
The previous tension that hung in the air has dissipated, replaced with an aura of comfort and willingness to understand. Lingering touches became intentional as the night wears on, leading the two lovers to embrace in the arms of each other as sleep over takes them. It may always start slow, but once it has momentum in the right direction, there’s no stopping it.

tsukishima kei as a boyfriend:
𓂃⋆.˚ tsukishima is not the type to fall in love quickly. he’s naturally cautious with people and takes a long time to genuinely trust someone. the relationship probably starts as friendship first because he needs time to learn who you are when nobody is looking. he pays attention to the little things most people miss, like the way you react when you’re frustrated, how you treat strangers or which stories make your eyes light up when you’re excited.
𓂃⋆.˚ his love language is remembering things. you’ll mention wanting to try a certain café three months ago and completely forget about it, only for him to casually suggest going there one afternoon. you’ll complain about being cold once and suddenly notice that he always chooses seats away from drafts whenever you’re together. he remembers absolutely everything and acts like it’s completely normal.
𓂃⋆.˚ the teasing never stops. ever. if you do something embarrassing, he’s going to bring it up. if you trip over absolutely nothing, he’s going to laugh. if you make a terrible joke, he’ll stare at you for ten seconds before telling you it was awful. the important difference is that his teasing becomes softer once he’s in love. there’s affection underneath it that wasn’t there before.
𓂃⋆.˚ one of the biggest signs that tsukishima loves you is that he actively seeks out your company. for most people, being alone is his default setting. if he’s choosing to spend his free time with you, that’s a huge deal. he’ll pretend it’s because he had nothing better to do, but meanwhile he’s rearranged his entire schedule so he can spend an extra hour with you after work.
𓂃⋆.˚ he’s surprisingly protective, though not in an aggressive way. if somebody is being rude to you, he won’t start a fight. instead he’ll calmly dismantle them with one perfectly timed comment and then continue his conversation as though nothing happened. meanwhile the other person is standing there wondering what just happened.
𓂃⋆.˚ physical affection develops slowly. tsukishima isn’t naturally clingy, so when he starts reaching for your hand in public or resting his chin on top of your head while you’re sitting together, it means he’s become incredibly comfortable with you. those little moments feel much more meaningful because he doesn’t do them with anyone else.
𓂃⋆.˚ he absolutely loves listening to you talk when you’re passionate about something. he might roll his eyes and pretend you’re rambling, but he’s secretly memorizing every detail. later you’ll discover he remembers entire conversations you forgot having.
𓂃⋆.˚ after difficult days, he’ll often sit beside you without saying much. tsukishima isn’t the kind of person who immediately offers solutions or dramatic speeches. instead he’ll quietly make tea, sit down next to you and let you talk whenever you’re ready. somehow that silence feels more comforting than most people’s words.
𓂃⋆.˚ when he’s tired, his affection becomes much more obvious. his filter weakens significantly. he’ll lean against your shoulder during long train rides, unconsciously reach for your hand while walking and occasionally say genuinely sweet things before realizing what came out of his mouth and immediately trying to recover.
𓂃⋆.˚ yamaguchi notices all of this before anyone else. one day he casually mentions that tsukishima smiles more around you and he nearly chokes. yamaguchi never lets him live it down.
tsukishima kei as a husband:
𓂃⋆.˚ marrying tsukishima doesn’t suddenly turn him into some overly romantic movie character. he’s still sarcastic. he’s still dramatic about minor inconveniences. he still acts mildly offended every time you steal food off his plate despite the fact that you’ve been doing it for years. what changes is the level of comfort between the two of you.
𓂃⋆.˚ there’s something incredibly domestic about living with him. you’ll wake up on sunday mornings and find him making coffee while still half asleep. he’ll be standing there in old sweatpants with messy hair, looking completely different from the composed person everyone else knows.
𓂃⋆.˚ he becomes deeply attached to routines. evening walks, grocery shopping together, watching the same show every friday night. none of these things sound particularly romantic from the outside, but they become some of his favorite parts of married life because they’re moments that belong entirely to the two of you.
𓂃⋆.˚ tsukishima absolutely becomes the husband who quietly takes care of things before you notice they need doing. he’ll replace broken light bulbs, refill things around the house and fix minor problems without mentioning it. half the time you don’t even realize something was wrong until it’s already been solved.
𓂃⋆.˚ if you get sick, he transforms into the most overprotective version of himself imaginable. suddenly he’s checking your temperature every few hours, making sure you’re drinking enough water and glaring whenever you try to leave bed. he’ll insist he’s only doing it because he doesn’t want to get sick too, which fools absolutely nobody.
𓂃⋆.˚ he’s also the kind of husband who casually incorporates you into every future plan without thinking about it. he’ll say things like “when we go there next year” or “we should try that restaurant sometime” because in his mind you’re already part of every version of the future he imagines.
𓂃⋆.˚ despite all the sarcasm, he’s incredibly proud of you. he doesn’t brag loudly like oikawa would or become emotional like hinata. instead he’ll find tiny excuses to mention your accomplishments in conversations. eventually you realize he’s talking about you because he’s proud and suddenly every comment means ten times more.
𓂃⋆.˚ years into marriage, you’ll still occasionally catch him staring at you when he thinks you aren’t looking. when you ask what’s wrong, he’ll immediately look away and claim he was thinking about something else. he wasn’t.
𓂃⋆.˚ he just has moments where he’s reminded that somehow the person he loves most chose him back, and even after all this time, that still feels a little unbelievable.
𓂃⋆.˚ underneath all the sarcasm and eye rolls and dry comments, tsukishima loves deeply. he just loves quietly. the kind of love that shows up every day, remembers your coffee order for years, reaches for your hand without thinking and still chooses you in a thousand tiny ways long after the excitement of a new relationship has faded.
𓂃⋆.˚ that’s probably the most tsukishima thing imaginable. he isn’t the kind of person who promises forever in grand speeches. he’s the kind who simply stays and keeps staying year after year after year.
when you’re riding tsukki and he won’t shut up about how you’re struggling to take him so you shift forward, fingers tightening around the strong column of his neck. you see his eyes dilate, his breath hitch, all because of your fucking hand around his throat.
you get in close. your breath ghosts over his lips, saccharine smile overtaking your face, "you really think your cock's enough to satisfy me?"
he tries to strangle his groan, but you feel how violently his cock kicks inside your cunt.
"does little tsukki need his senpai to teach him how to fuck?" you lick the hollow of his throat. bite down on his neck. relish in the shudders and moans coming out of the usually sarcastic man. "did they not teach you how to make it fit?"
"what the fuck—"
he bucks his hips up into your slippery, wet heat, letting out a string of curses.
"aww, you mad at me, baby?" you're glad the languorous circles in his lap are driving him crazy. he teases you too often not to get fucked with. "should i call kuroo-san and see if he can pencil in a quick lesson?"
thinking about the time i went to the natural history museum with a summer fling, and he was so tall and for a good chunk of the date he just had his hand on the back of my neck. just walking around with his hand lightly resting on the back of my neck. anyways, this too could be tsukishima kei, if you squint
