THEME RELEASE: SUPERNATURAL (NEW JEANS-INSPIRED THEME)
Hi everyone! 🐰 I’m so excited to finally release my new theme, Supernatural. It’s a NewJeans-inspired, retro desktop theme designed to make your blog look like a Y2K operating system.
I wanted something that felt nostalgic but clean, so I included a hidden "Bento Grid" dashboard that holds your bio, status, and playlist!

So this post is for the people who've been using Tumblr, following people/blogs you like, hoping that every time they post you can see the stuffs they post/reblog! But there seems to be one problem... every time they post, their posts just doesn't show up on the top of your dashboard! You only saw them only hours or days later or you don't see them all, missing your mutual's post! 🫨
Is there an algorithm on Tumblr? Yes. But you can turn it OFF. Unlike Instagram which doesn't allow us to turn off its algorithm and only sees posts with high engagements, Tumblr has the option to turn OFF its algorithm - and ultimately makes your dashboard chronological/timeline-based ☝️🤓

🔮 Turning OFF 'Best Stuff First' 🔮
So, to do this, go to your settings, and go to 'Dashboard Preferences', and TURN OFF the 'Best Stuff First'.
'Best Stuff First' is the algorithm in Tumblr where it'll present you with the stuffs they'd think you'd like based on your likes and reblogs. This is usually turned on automatically by the site itself for new-comers/users to give the new users some time as we look for blogs we like and follow.
Usually after you follow lots of blogs, you'd like to see your mutual's latest posts. So here is how you turn the algorithm off!

Et voila! Just like that, your dashboard is now timeline-based and chronological. No more seeing posts from days, weeks, or months ago.
(I myself like to see what's new from my mutuals. But if you have your own preference to see the most popular stuff on the top of your dashboard, feel free to turn the algorithm on.)

⌚ Turning on Time Stamps ⌚
To make it more clear, let's turn on the time stamps. Yes, you can know when a post is posted on Tumblr.
So you'd usually see posts on your dashboard like this image below. As you can see, there are only the usernames, but no time indicator.
To see when this post was posted, you can go to the dashboard settings and turn ON the 'Show timestamps on posts, reblogs, and notes'

After turning this on, you can see that underneath the usernames, there's a timestamp! Now you know when the posts shown on your dashboard was posted!
There's even posts from seconds ago! Pretty neat and convenient isn't it ( •̀ .̫ •́ )✧ OR again, if you don't like to see the times, feel free to turn it off too!

Tumblr DOES NOT Update the original post after it's reblogged.
I'm trying to explain this for the n00bs that keep posting OMG, why don't you have... on my posts based on REBLOGS.
This post is for every Tumblr user who has ever had their posts reblogged and keep getting notes about things they already edited or put comments on.
For newer users, please stop harassing OPs without checking the original post FIRST. I swear it takes less time than you making a post about it.
HOW DOES TUMBLR WORK?
Ami is awesome, but a flawed human being. She wants to make a post on different kinds of rare puppies.
The post due to it being not cat pics and having a lot of rare dogs like say, the Sapsali, gets a ton of likes and reblogs.
Ami made a mistake on her post after the reblogs! A shíshī is mythical! What she really meant was that she wanted to list the Tibetan Mastiff *looked like* a shíshī .
Now, does Tumblr:
A: Fix the post on all reblogs after she edits her mistake.
B: Preserve her mistake in reblogs for all time?
Tumblr does B.
WHY, does Tumblr preserve her mistake in reblogs for all time?.
If OP edits the blog, say, Ami to rare kittens pictures instead, then the thing that the reblogger is commenting on will disappear. But Ami is a good person and wouldn't do that to her rebloggers.
Instead, you n00b Tumblr user are now hitting the reblog button and harassing Ami over the fact that, "OMG, but you missed the fact that shíshī are not realllll!!!"
And then when Ami politely reminds you that Tumblr preserves previous versions of the blog on reblog, you cry, "But I know how Tumblr works! WHERE IS THE ORIGINAL POST?"
Now Ami's post with the cute dogs is taking off and Ami is putting in more and more puppies. And more people are commenting, But I don't see... "Shar-Pei puppies! What gives!"
But she already updated her original post a week ago to include it and these users are complaining and private messaging and going on about how Shar-Pei puppies are the most wrinkly dogs ever. Which is exactly what she said last week and she can't change the reblogged posts that missed it.
The rebloggers also have moved on and can't update the post and point people to read the original post because those people ALSO, get their reblogs preserved for all time and they don't think they have to explain how the site works to n00bs.
The n00bs are outraged at Ami for not holding their hand.
Can we collectively acknowledge how annoying it is for people to not take a few seconds to read the original post before spending sometimes half an hour or more replying at the original poster like they didn't spend a few hours trying to correct and update their post already?
Why Tumblr Users Update their posts.
The n00bs cry something like, "But you should have made a new post instead of editing your old one."

You are expecting the OP, with a serviceable post to copy paste their old post which still can be reblogged from and make a new post so you can understand how Tumblr works, just for you? Do you hear yourself?
Look, Tumblr has a whole help section for you. And you are replying to someone politely telling you that they updated their original post by demanding they make a new one? WHY?
The rebloggers could also and may have also reblogged the updated post and you didn't bother to check that either. Are you going to demand that they hold your hand too?
That's entirely selfish. Please don't do this to people.
But WHY THE SHORT NOTE! It was so rude!
It might boggle your mind, but since YOU didn't check the reblogs in this entire time, on popular posts, especially the post owner might get 10-20 reblogs or more per day begging them to add things that they already added. And they got life to live.
I know, how rude that they have more to life than spending it on you and people like you demanding they add things to their post and on the reblog that you just saw but they can't edit.
Also, assuming because someone is presenting as a woman, or a man, does not mean they are. OMG, yes.

No one goes around and declares loudly, "I am a white person that would like to have white woman speech talked at me." This site is what? Anonymous mostly. Fuck all if I know what your communication style is. I'm going to go for the simplest and fastest one for me and for you.
What I'm assuming on my side is that you've never been taught how to use the internet and you need the bluntest instructions ever because you might be ND. And NDs thrive on short, to-the-point instructions.
I'm going to bend to the largest disability group instead and also I have a life. I'm not going to link it for you. And when you get 10+ notes a day on the same thing over and over, again, you, too, would be blunt and to the point. PLUS a lot of rude people mixed in that are complaining about the communication style, and you give up.
Give grace to the OP. They have other blog posts they also want to make. Their world is not centered around you. Making demands of them to do things for you, just because you wouldn't learn is rude. Stop doing that.

1. Go to the comments section.
OMG, 313 comments, what shall I do.
Click that. Yes. This is a newer feature. It will open.
Scroll alll the way to the bottom. I swear this might take some time because javascript is that way, and your finger is itching to hit the reblog because the button is right there, but this will be faster and make you less annoying.
Search for the original person's name.
Then you do a find function. Copy-paste the OP's blog name. They often will post corrections and updates to the comments section. This is frequent on Tumblr.
But I don't know how to search!

This is cntrl/cmd +F on a computer browser.
If you have the misfortune of using a phone, three dots upper, right, then scroll down to "Find in page" with a magnifying glass icon next to it.
Type/paste in the name of the blog owner.
2. Access the Reblog history.
Look for reblogs of the OP reblogging the OP. Those are usually updates. This might be tedious because it's viral. So method 1 is usually better.
3. Take some time to access the original blog.
SO HOLD MY HAND ANYWAY. *Cry* Show me how to access the original.
There's 3 methods:
1. Look for reblogs from OP. OP is marked in the reblogs.
OP used to not be marked in the reblogs, but now is. Reblogs usually from OP to OP are updates. Again tedious.
2. Bother to read the notes and SKIM for OP's notes.
Usually OP will say something like, I made a mistake in previous version of post. This is a FREQUENT occurrence on this website. It will save you and OP time.
3. You can strip back to the original blog.
3 dots to the right, click hover.
Copy link, it says the original date of the blog.
Make a new tab. (cntrl/cmd+T)
Paste link into address bar. Oh see...
The post HAS been updated after all At the time of THIS post it is January 12, 2026... but future updates might not be... Hmmm... But did this person add.. Iunno, super niche non genAI program (which I beg you to not ask for this.) no one uses?
You can find out by using your super power called "find"

These three dots are also on Youtube, so you can edit your posts this way. They are on a ton of other sites.
You can use it on youtube to edit and report post.
These three dots are also on your phone's browser and on all of your apps. They think you'd recognize it by now as a significant part of the website/app/broswer.
It's what? Consistent across many websites, because UX people figured if you saw it, you might click it because what?
Settings is also under a three stacked lines on your browser:
so visually, you should be able to recognize it by now. it's been like this for about a decade or two.
You've unlocked a new power. Now you can both find and change your settings. What Firefox background are you using? I'm using a Sakura pattern on mine.
BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR NOTIFICATIONS OFF IF YOU'RE SO BOTHERED!!! YOU KNOW YOU CAN DO THAT.
Stop telling people what they should do on their own posts because you're embarrassed you didn't know how Tumblr works? Hey, I'm saying it feminine and like a didactic Jew for you.
Some posts, unlike Ami's about super rare dog breeds are super sensitive posts. And Tumblr doesn't do speedy moderating after having hundreds of thousands of blogs, a ton of users and real complaints to go after. Ami, up there, might have done a post on animal abuse and wants to make sure that everyone in the comments stays civil. Say, she wants to block doxxing. So to be a responsible blogger, she might need to keep the comments on.
Your indignation that Ami hasn't turned off the notifications on her viral post because she pointed out that you could have checked the original post is not exactly helping, is it?
Ami is helping more people by telling YOU to learn how to use Tumblr.
You are only protecting your ego. Which one is more community friendly? Ask yourself that first before raging over being told to check the original post and harassing Ami over your bruised ego.
I have posts about LGBTQIA, child abuse, disability, racism and so on. I feel like I have a moral obligation to keep the notifications ON for those posts so that people who do reblog and comment on the post don't get harassed. Some posts, I really, really want to be notified about to keep them up to date with new information or news. But it's not up to YOU, dear reader of a blog to tell people if they should or shouldn't be doing on their own posts just because you were told and (then didn't read) the original updated post in an angry/upset way. You could read the updated post and then figure out, "Hey, they do update the post, so this is why they keep their notifications on I see new credited information from Tumblr people," instead of being rude about it and wasting everyone's time.
Meanwhile Ami is likely happier just learning about a new dog breed she never heard of before and you should be happy for her. "Sapsali!!! A ghost hunter dog from Korea??"
Conclusion
I'm begging you to make this viral to save everyone who likes to edit their posts the headache of dealing with people who feel like they are owed an explanation. You can internally link it every time someone gets uppity. (I just showed you how to link it.) You can reblog it. You can save it and reblog it every time someone does this to you. You can reblog it just because everyone should know how to use a computer by now and how to adjust their settings, especially if they are dyslexic and need to change the fonts to something dyslexic friendly. Or you want to remind people they could have a Rurouni Kenshin browser background. Those 3 dots are magic.
But I hope this will save everyone time. And excuse me, but I have better things to do.

So I was poking around through my followers list and I noticed that there are a few of you who have no title, no profile picture, no custom site and no bio who do have enough likes to make me think you might be a real person and not a bot. If you are indeed a real person, please read this post.
If I click on you and your blog looks like this:
you look like a bot, yes even if you have a substantial amount of likes.
It is very easy to make yourself look human, and because I'm feeling helpful and chatty today, I'm going to show you how to do that, with screenshots. I even went on this site in safari where I don't have dashboardunfucker set up to take these screenshots, so you know I'm feeling good today.
Step 1:
In your sidebar go to "account" highlighted in blue below:
Step 2:
Select your blog in the drop down. (There are a bunch of blogs on mine because I have multiple junk side blogs.) For the purpose of this exercise I made a brand new blank one called imtotallyabot56789.
Step 3:
Go to "blog settings" in the right hand sidebar. This will take you to a new page.
Step 4:
On that new page, select "edit appearance".
Step 5:
Get to editing! I've highlighted for you the 4 most important things you need to change to not be a bot.
Those things are:
your icon
your header
your title & bio
you banner/bio colors
Some notes:
Your banner can be a .gif, a .png or a .jpg. It is best at a 16:9 ratio. I can't remember how big mine was, but a little bit bigger is better so that it displays decently on desktop and on mobile.
Your icon/profile picture should be a square. I think it displays at 128x128, but I don't know for sure. Use a bigger image than that though. Mine is apparently 886x886 at 72 ppi. Don't pick a photo of yourself unless there's something interesting about it (ie: you're in cosplay or something) because a regularass photo of a person looks like a bot as well. If you don't know what to pick, you can head over to picrew and use an icon generator there to create an icon. There are a lot of fun options. If you want to design your own and don't have photoshop or something like that, check out photopea which is an in browser photoshop clone. Have fun with this -- pick a character you like or a pretty image. Like whatever you want just don't stick with the default one. Use either a jpg or a png.
Your title doesn't have to be that deep. Or descriptive. A lot of people use lines from books, music, poetry, tv or movies for theirs. Mine is related to Elizabeth Warren ("Nevertheless She Persisted"). I've previously used "Death Cannot Stop True Love" and "This could be a little more sonic"
Your bio also doesn't have to be long or, like describe anything super detailed about you. The beauty of tumblr dot hell is that it is one of the more anonymous social media sites out on the internet. You could literally just put something like "Fandom Lurker". Just have something.
The banner/bio colors just change the color of the border around your header image/icon "background" and the accent color.
Step 6:
Some additional basic (optional) things to do:
Enable "Custom Theme". This gives you an actual website rather than the dumb little tumblr dot com/blog/yourblognamehere thing that you get by default. The advantages to having an actual yourblognamehere dot tumblr dot com website are numerous. I made a whole post about that with instructions on how to do that. (note that the screenshots in that post were made before the tumblr layout change that was tumblr staff copying twitter's homework). A big benefit to having your own site is that it is easier to find tagged posts on a site because the default search that tumblr has on the /blog/yourblognamehere thing is hot flaming garbage and pulls posts that don't have that tag whilst also missing ones that do. with a yourblognamehere dot tumblr dot com site you can simply go to yourblognamehere(dot)tumblr(dot)com/tagged/mycooltag and see all the tagged posts. Dooo this. you know you want to doooo this.
2. Open your ask box and turn off tumblr affiliate links. Asks can be fun. They can also be terrible. You can always turn them off later if you decide that people are being mean to you. Personally I have not had that problem in the 12 years I've been here. Maybe it's just the relative obscurity of this blog? who knows. glad for that though.
3. Add some featured tags.
This is a newer setting but I think it's fun. If you make posts (or reblog lots of posts) you can add a few tags that you use very often to this as little shortcuts for people visiting your blog.
