I like to think the Tunameltdown chirping never ends. They’re in their 50s and Shane innocently asks Ilya if he wants a tuna melt for lunch and Ilya goes, “Yes, but let me hide your running shoes first.” Shane just throws a fork at him.
this is the first fandom I’ve ever been in that requires its own Rosetta Stone and I just wanna say. good job
I am left sort of perpetually confused by the people who claim that the tunamelt fight was caused by a miscommunication. They both communicated pretty clearly and the other one got the message!
Ilya is obviously trying to change the terms of their relationship to involve more of a, well, relationship than it previously has. Quite clearly Shane notices and understands this and it is exactly this which freaks him out. (He says this later, in Tampa: I'm sorry I freaked out, but it felt like we were something.) He responds almost equally clearly, says he can't do this, and leaves.
Just because they hurt each other's feelings doesn't mean they did not communicate effectively! They are just in a really shitty situation that (at that point in time especially) has no resolution which does not hurt them both!
As an aside, I am almost equally confused by people who claim that Ilya was trying to ask Shane to be his boyfriend, or for them to start an actual romantic relationship. Ilya makes it very clear that he does not think this is a possibility for them at all at this point. And all his talking about Svetlana, or telling Shane that he likes him but then immediately undercutting it with a sex joke, like... He's clearly trying to be friends with benefits. Which would be a huge step from where they are currently at, and especially so in the show where we clearly see that Ilya's most stable and treasured relationship in life if with someone he has this exact kind of relationship with. This really is not nothing! But it is also not him trying to woo Shane Hollander into a traditional committed relationship because, as he says very clearly later on: They can't be.
Watching episode 4 for the mgblrf time and noticed this:
Ilya: Stay.
Shane: Stay?
Ilya: Stay.
Shane: OK.
Ilya: OK?
Shane: OK.
PEOPLE THAT'S THE RULE OF THREE, WE HAVE OURSELVES A SPELL, THESE TWO ARE BOUND TOGETHER FOR LIFE, SOMEONE LIGHT A RED CANDLE AND SEAL THE DEAL.

Finally, I can just turn off the show after episode 4 and watch episode 5 later without worrying these two doorknobs will somehow fuck everything up.
