Grayland

This is an outbound train headed for Milwaukee just eight miles out from Chicago Union Station, at Grayland.

We're on the Milwaukee Road and the equipment is the French RTG, or so-called Turboliner, operated by Amtrak.

The train will soon cross over a north/south line of the C&NW, with Mayfair just beyond that.

RTG TURBOTRAIN by Roger Bee Via Flickr: Amtrak #63 an RTG Turbo barrels around a curve passing the old GM&O yard at Bloomington, IL on 05-19-1975 on a cool clear morning. The St. Louis corridor was the first to receive the new Turboliner equipment, with the initial run occurring September 28, 1973. The two daily frequencies were branded Turboliner, replaced the individual names Abraham Lincoln and Prairie State. Track conditions limited the new trainsets to 79 miles per hour, but they were clean, comfortable, quiet and reliable. In the first year the Chicago–St. Louis running time dropped from 5.5 to 5 hours. The RTG model was an Americanized version of the French RTG Turbotrain. Amtrak later installed oscillating headlights on the cab ends for better grade crossing recognition because motorists would often mistake the Turbos' dual headlights with automobiles on the parallel U.S. Rt. 66 on the St. Louis line, resulting in several grade crossing accidents. The oscillating lights were mounted between the original headlights, later changed to above the windshield. A neat little train to see and hear!
