Dumbledore slides his hands into his pockets as they exit his office, his gaze briefly on their steps. “And…will Ms. Goldstein be returning to America?”
“Oh no you don’t,” Newt scolds the niffler, who has thrown his weight from Newt’s waistcoat in a final attempt for the hidden teaspoons. “Er—I don’t know. We haven’t had a chance to…”
Dumbledore tilts his head, and Newt supposes that even speaking to Queenie didn’t feel quite so much like his thoughts were written directly in his eyes. “I know that look,” his former professor says.
Newt blinks. The niffler, ever willing to take advantage of a lapse in attention, strains again towards the drawer of cutlery. Newt steadies him.
“Do you want her to return to America?” Dumbledore asks.
Newt frowns, first at the idea of his having the right to an opinion on the subject. But the thought of her thousands of miles away for months. Years maybe. And him not allowed to travel. “It’s not my place to—“
“She’ll probably need to work from Europe for a time. Grindelwald is here, after all, and so, as I’ve heard, is her sister. But you might express that you…enjoy her company.”
“We’d been writing,” Newt offers. “Until a few months ago. She stopped. Misunderstanding.”
Dumbledore raises an eyebrow. “Complicated then.”
“No. No, she’s amazing, Dumbledore.”
“Well then.”
Newt looks down as they continue down the hall.
“Newt, I don’t suppose she thinks it’s complicated, either.”
Newt looks up, relieved that someone has seen them the way he does. That the effortlessness he feels in talking to Tina and being with Tina—the effortlessness he thinks she feels, as well—is not a figment of his imagination.
Dumbledore gives him a brief, twinkling smile. “I know her look, too.”
turnonthelightpls replied to your post “Top 5 Black Widow comic book arcs? (I can’t remember if you’ve…”
Where can we find these??
The Yelena Belova arc and the Black Widow: Breakdown arc can both be found collected in trades as Black Widow: The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
The Nathan Edmondson/Phil Noto arc is collected in trades beginning with Black Widow: The Finely Woven Thread (and continuing with the trades titled The Tightly Tangled Web and Last Days.
The Marjorie Liu arc is collected in trade as Black Widow: Name of the Rose.
Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s run is collected beginning with Black Widow: S.H.I.E.L.D’s Most Wanted (and continuing in No More Secrets).
The last ones I listed are more complicated but mostly in the trades I listed by name; the Avengers Assemble arc is part of the trade Avengers Assemble: Science Bros, and the Fear Itself issue is part of the Secret Avengers: Fear Itself trade. The one off “Captain America and the Secret Avengers” issue is only collected in the Captain America: Allies and Enemies trade.
You can get these as trades as I’ve noted here (easiest way to read) at bookstores or comics stores (all are in print, as far as I know), or you can buy issues digitally through Comixology or Marvel, or if you have a Marvel Unlimited subscription I believe they are all there.
So, how many of you attacked the Fire Nation on Monday? 😛
I, alas, did not. First day back at CC means the first week of the Nightmarish Parking Dance, which is where you fall in line with all the other parking vultures and circle the parking lots for hours waiting for a space to open. (Which is a LOT less coordinated than I just made it sound...) Monday's time was 1 hr 45 min, leaving me barely 5 min to get to class. Fortunately, the Nightmarish Parking Dance only lasts a couple of weeks, and then it settles down to a mere Annoying Parking Dance, like Walmart on a weekend. 😅
(In case any of you missed this post, I really actually wanted feedback on my split blog idea.)
(Also, to those of you who've sent me "5 happy things" asks in the last week or so: don't worry, I got them! I'll get to them soon.)
Anyway, now it's time for me to attempt to answer all your wonderful replies to my appreciation post... under a read more cause it’s crazy long. 😂

thanks! this is quite come company you’ve put me in. it will inspire me.
Eli runs into Tina before she’s stepped fully onto the platform.
Tina hugs her youngest, laughing as Newt and Hanne join them. Their daughter has only a few years left of school, a young woman, really, though she wears her newfound height as awkwardly as Tina had at this age. Tina gives each of them a hug, allowing Newt to take over with carrying her bag.
“No Evan?”
Hanne sighs the longs-suffering sigh of an older sister.
“He wouldn’t come,” Eli tells her.
“He and dad argued about it,” Hanne adds as she catches up.
“They argued yesterday, too,” Eli tells her seriously. “Evan’s been really grumpy all week. He says he doesn’t want to go back to Hogwarts next week.”
“Evan? Really?” Tina glances back at Newt.
He nods and gestures as though to say he’ll tell her more about it later.
After supper, when Eli’s asleep and Hanne’s gone to the case to read, Tina goes to check in on him. Newt follows, standing in the doorway to Evan’s room.
“What’s this I hear about not goin’ back to school.”
“Nothing.”
“Really? So it’s not true?”
“No, its just–I just don’t want to, okay?”
“Evan, you love school. And your friends, and Quidditch.”
“How do you know?”
“Evan,” Newt warns.
“You don’t know, Mum, do you?” Evan stands, brushing past Tina to the door. “At least Dad’s been around this year.”
“Evan!” Newt cries.
Tina stares after him, her eyes filling with tears as he storms down the stairs. She moves to stand, but Newt squeezes her shoulder. “Give him a minute. Believe me, I’ve learnt that the hard way this week. He’s a lot like Theseus, really.”
“Newt,” she whispers, her voice rough and harsh.
He sits on Evan’s bed beside her.
“He’s right. I am always gone.”
“Oh, love.” He gathers her into his side, and she collapses against him. She misses them all so desperately, and it feels like the closer they get to finally ending this thing, the more it hurts to leave. “You’re here as much as you can be. And you’re fighting for their future. For a safer world for them. They know that. He’s just–he misses you, that’s all. And he’s impulsive like his mum.”
“Mum? Dad?” Hanne stands in the doorway, a book tucked under one arm, the niffler huddling in the other. The niffler looks worried to see Tina upset, and scrambles down to join her, hopping onto her lap with a worried sniff.
“Come in, Darling,” Newt offers, gesturing to Tina’s free side. Tina wipes her tears away, taking a deep breath.
Hanne wraps her arms around her mother. “Evan’s in the kitchen. He says he doesn’t want to talk to me, either.” She sighs. “I think he wants to stay here because you are, Mum. I think he doesn’t want to go to school because you might have left again by the time he comes back.”
“Ah,” Newt whispers.
Tina studies her, their first, a wonderful, accidental blessing. If she hadn’t fallen pregnant, if they’d waited until ‘things were better’, they might never have had children. Certainly not these three who are more precious to her than life itself.
“You shouldn’t–don’t feel guilty, Mum. It’s not a sad thing. It’s because we love you. And we know you go because you love us.”
“My wise girl.” Tina smiles tremulously. “I wish I could always be here for you. You know that, don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Mum?” Evan stands in the doorway, sniffling. “I’m sorry.” Evan rushes forward and into Tina’s arms. At twelve, he’s a bit big to be held in her lap, but they make it work.
“You want to stay with me?” she asks, and he nods, rubbing at his tears. “I miss you, too. More than I could say.”
“I know,” he sniffles.
“Shh,” she smoothes his auburn hair. She loves that two of their children look so very much like Newt; Newt just finds it funny that both of them say they want to be aurors.
“How about this–should we go to the cottage together this week? Just our family?”
Evan brightens. “Really? We can do that?”
Tina glances at Newt, and at Hanne, who’s smiling at the idea. “Of course. I’ll write to Uncle Theseus and tell him I need a few days off.”
“He won’t say no. He always listens to you.”
Newt snorts.
“He does, doesn’t he?”
“I know you two don’t remember anything different,” Newt adds, “but this will end, someday. And all we can do is be as happy as possible and…live our lives, until it does.”
Tina catches his eye, leaning into his side. That’s what they’ve done, isn’t it, all of these years. And as she looks at their children, she thinks they’ve done all right.
4. “I should have told you about this a long time ago.” ?
Also prompted “letters” by @jcelm12
“Oh, here. Let me–” Tina catches the bundle of folded parchment teetering on the edge of Newt’s desk before it can fall to the ground. She glances down, startled to see her own name scrawled across the top in his cramped but precise hand. She’d kept his letters, but in her own desk, in the flat she’d rented a couple of weeks ago when Theseus offered her a temporary job.
Newt turns to her from the notes and sketches sorting themselves into piles, lowering his wand. He tilts his head curiously. “What is it?”
“Oh, I didn’t mean to…”
He looks at the pages, and a delicate flush grows on his cheeks. “It’s quite all right. I should’ve–I should’ve told you about those, before.”
“You don’t have to–”
“I kept writing,” he says, and though the blush might seemed embarrassed to a less familiar eye, she can tell from his voice that he is not. “Even when you stopped, I had–more things to say. So I kept writing.”
“Oh,” Tina whispers, looking down at the pages.
“Would you–”
“You could–”
They stop, smiling to have talked over each other.
“They’re yours, really,” he says.
“Oh,” Tina whispers again, tracing her name in the slanted script. Why does it make her throat tight? But in a good way. Mercy Lewis, she should’ve just written back.
She looks up and finds that Newt is studying her. Hesitantly, almost. For so long, she’d tried to think that he had forgotten about her.
His hopeful eyes remind her that he’d felt the same uncertainty she had. “I’d love to read them.”
He smiles, a relaxed thing now, beautiful on his open face.
She leans forward before she can think too long about it, gently covering his hand with hers, and though she expects that the letters will be wonderful, she thinks they may still not match his startled, contented gaze as he turns his hand to fit with hers.
22, 23. What do they fight about? Who apologizes first?
They really don’t fight often at all and generally not about things so much as occasionally being too short with each other while under stress. Whoever was too harsh apologizes and they leave it at that.
Very, very occasionally, there is one recurring point of tension when Tina leaves for particularly long or dangerous assignments and Newt doesn’t want her to go. He understands that this job is part of who she is and that neither of them could possibly leave the world to its own devices in a time like this with how empathetic and passionate they both are.
But there are days when he knows she’s going somewhere that won’t be at all safe, or when she’s only been home a day or two and has to leave again, and that can take its toll. He’ll be out of sorts, dropping things while feeding the creatures and telling the niffler off for standing too close to him, then hastily apologizing.
And then Tina will follow him into the menagerie and touch his hand and he’ll just crack and plead, “I don’t want you to go.” Part of her finds this frustrating. After all, he knows she has to and he knew that this was part of the deal when they married. But then she holds out a hand and he collapses into her, pressing his face into her shoulder and holding onto her and she knows she’d be the same.
24. Little things they do to take care of each other?
When Newt’s been up late with one of the creatures, Tina goes downstairs to take off his boots and cover him with a blanket in whatever grassy enclosure or uncomfortable folding chair he’s landed. She’s also made it her personal responsibility to fix his bowtie before book signings.
When Tina gets in from work after a raid, Newt tends to wait up for her with a cup of tea (or coffee). Also, when their baby is crying to be fed and Tina’s really, really tired, Newt goes to get their daughter and brings her to Tina in their bed so she doesn’t have to.
They both tend to notice little things about each other as well. “You look tired today” and “it seemed like you didn’t sleep well last night” and “is your ankle hurting you?”.
turnonthelightpls replied to your post: prompt about that deleted scene? where Tina throws...
yeah Kath was joking with her headcannon for Achilles but I think peeople are referring to the part before, about Tina’s explanation (probably like ½-1 sentence) to Newt about Achilles, that didn’t make it into the film
I wish they’d done that! But I think J.K. Rowling doesn’t like narrating stuff she’s already implied/referenced so it doesn’t surprise me.
