I don't think it's a coincidence that the increase in viewing media being referred to as "consumption" has correlated with seasons becoming shorter and shorter. With it now being the norm for complete seasons to be 5 or 6 episodes long, even someone who only has an hour for TV per day can watch an entire series in a week. Gone are the days of 20 episode seasons where characters and storylines become constants in our lives for months at a time. And showrunners are just the lackeys for the execs in a lot of cases. Especially Gimple. Artistic integrity is the loser.
I think they look at the ratings, see how high they are, and determine that good competent storytelling is overrated. If it doesn't effect the bottom line then it's not important.
