Aspec Glossary: QPR
What is the Aspec Glossary?
A QPR (queerplatonic relationship) is a type of relationship that does not conform to typical expectations for a romantic relationship. Aspec folks are often in QPRs, but they are not exclusive to aspecs. Anyone can be in a queerplatonic relationship.
What exactly a QPR looks like is determined by the people in that relationship, but, in general, it is a platonic relationship with the same level of intimacy and commitment that is typically expected of a romantic relationship, but without feelings of romantic love.
A queerplatonic relationship is called such because it "queers" what is expected of a platonic relationship.
QPRs are no less important than romantic relationships, just different. The terms of the relationship are defined only by the people in the relationship. In this sense, QPR is an umbrella term for a whole host of relationships, wherein, typically, the only stipulation is that it does not involve romantic love or involves romantic love in a non-normative way.
To an outside observer, a QPR may look like a typical if strong friendship, a platonic marriage or a marriage for tax benefits, friends with benefits, some combination of those, or something else entirely.
No two QPRs are the same. In some ways, a QPR is moreso a category of relationship.
Queerplatonic attraction is so bizarre like wdym I want to fall asleep on your shoulder and I smile every time I think of you and I want to embrace you and kiss you on the cheek and I genuinely love you so much and labeling it as romantic doesn’t seem right, yet labeling it as regular platonic attraction doesn’t seem like enough

truly don’t think there’s anything they aren’t fucking about. other people’s relationship drama? fucking about it. their own relationship drama? fucking about it. dead dad? FUCKING ABOUT IT.
Pre-outing Shane Hollander has a recurring nightmare that they add a 'best at sex' contest to all-stars, and he has to watch Rozanov win it with some puck bunny while he struggles to get it up. Post-outing this becomes a wet dream where him and Rozanov win together in front of everyone.
Any time I read a fic that turns Shane into "the girl" I start bleeding from the ears
alternatively: shane comes out to his parents. no mention of boyfriend. so best momager and agent of all time yuna hollander asks around, does some sleuthing, goes undercover online and surveys the land for the most successful queer hockey player other than her son. imagine her surprise when she discovers from multiple sources that ilya rozanov might be gay. she arranges ads and promotions and sponsors for shane and ilya to do jointly. she hopes they hit it off and get together - only the best for her baby ofc - and she not so subtly asks after ilya from shane when they have a joint thing or an event where they meet. she is hoping, manifesting, praying and buying spells on etsy to have the two best hockey players in her family.
meanwhile every time shane and ilya meet up they fuck nasty, and ofc shane does not understand why his mom suddenly become a bears fan...
Sometime after Hollanov are outed and Shane is traded to Ottawa, Harris decides to do a "two truths and a lie" video.
Ilya: "My eyes are brown, I'm the captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, and before we were boyfriends, Shane Hollander and I were in a 7-year situationship."
And at first the comments on the video are all like "Haha, Rozanov, you're meant to pick something that could be true, not something that's so obviously a lie."
And then all of a sudden, people just start commenting zoomed in photos of Ilya Rozanov's eyes. And the internet loses its fucking mind.
And that's how Ilya and Shane reveal their relationship timeline.
i truly honestly don’t believe that shane thinks of what he does as submission, certainly not at first. i DO NOT mean this in a “oh he’s so innocent he doesn’t know that d/s even exists” way, i mean that he’s not going through those encounters thinking he’s submitting or being dominated. he’s just doing what feels right in the moment, and listening to ilya, being guided by ilya feels right to him. it comes so naturally he doesn’t question whether or not he should, he only knows that it feels better than anything he’s ever felt and he wants more of it
not to mention i genuinely think that early on if he acknowledged that he takes a submissive role while having sex with a man he’d run away. he would be so caught up in the implications of what that says about him and his desires that he’d panic and (at least try to) never contact ilya again
and since they don’t really talk about their dynamic during the situationship years he never really has to confront what he’s doing, he just keeps going with what seems to be working for them. ilya is in control of their sex and it feels good so why change it?
of course WE know what they’re doing, shane just thinks this is what they like and he doesn’t dare question or inspect it further

“i want to turn down a photo shoot for this pajamas line,” shane says, “i know i have a long relationship with the brand, but this is silly—”
“pajamas,” says ilya, his eyes turning dark, “really? you will wear shorts?”
weird, but shane scrolls on the email from yuna. “yes, they’re all shorts. it’s for the spring summer collection.”
ilya leans in on the sofa, arms on both sides of shane.
“will you do it for me, please? and can you have the pajamas?”
“ilya, i don’t think…” shane wants to say something else, but then ilya is gazing at him with those soft, puppy eyes. “fine.”
of course, ilya shows up to the photo shoot.
