As IATSE strike news is spreading, I’m seeing more people in different fandoms posting holding shows, and actors, and show runners accountable for how they treat their crews, and getting upset about stories from the industry. I’m also seeing people post things about how “their show” doesn’t have any red flags for 16 hour work days and stories from crew about people being crappy.
And I’d just like to say that neither of those things are the point of those stories being spread around.
This isn’t about your shows at all. This isn’t about whether or not a production or actors or creators are problematic.
This is about the studios being stingy assholes, whose union contracts are up for renegotiation, and they’re trying to take even more from people who don’t have anything left to give. The studios are the ones who push productions to the breaking point, who try to do things as cheaply as possible and will force shows into dangerous production schedules in order to keep the budget down.
Some shows are better about managing this, some have good leaders and put their crews first while others don’t. And it is good to hold those who don’t accountable. But that’s not really what this is about at the moment. It’s about raising the bar for everyone. There’s always going to be shows that stretch their crews to the limits of what’s allowed. The goal is to change what those limits are, to something that is actually livable.
Also, no one is calling for a boycott or a blackout yet. You don’t need to stop watching a show because you heard they treat their crew badly - in fact, I’d encourage you not to do that, because lower ratings can lead to lower budgets which just makes things worse. If a boycott or a blackout happens, it will be a widespread thing designed to hit the studios harder than the shows.
If you support SAG and the WGA you should sign this.

The only actual reasoning you need to support or not support the writers strike is that it isn't your fucking job, it's theirs, and they can strike if they want to, or not strike if they want to, and you don't get any say in it. So could you all respectfully shut the fuck up about it, from both sides, you are all screaming into an echo chamber anyways. This shit isn't Twitter, please don't try to make it Twitter.
