Unwanted Years
Part Four: Virginia
*Warnings* mentions of domestic violence, Damon's dark jokes, blood
She had been travelling for days, hopping on and off buses and cabs. Walking for miles, she did not tire, she kept moving ignoring her craving for blood. She was starving and she thought a good old fashioned American beef burger would help the cravings.
She stopped at a sign in a small town. The building read Mystic Grill in big white letters on the green building. She went inside. A raven haired man sat at the bar, she looked at the clock. It was nearly midnight, the bar was nearly empty. She walked up to the bar and slumped down onto a stool.
She whistled to get the barman's attention. The dark haired man looked over, annoyed at the disturbance. He looked back at his drink, circling the rim with his index finger. "You come far?" He said barely caring for the answer but wanting to get the measure of her. "New Orleans." She said, peering over the bar to see if she could find a menu. "What brings you to Virginia?" He said taking a swig is his bourbon and moving to the stool next to her. She looked at him, confused at his interest. "There's enough vampires here, it's hard enough hiding those of us who have been here for centuries, we don't need any more." The man said to her under his breath so the one trucker in the corner wouldn't hear.
"You don't tell me where I can and can't go, I've been walking for 2 days all of that time I have been in transition against my will so please just let me have my burger and leave"
"Why are you so desperate to get away from New Orleans" he remarked trying to catch her out.
"Why are you so desperate to know everything about me" she snapped back.
"I'm just an interested party" he said leaning away from her and continuing circling the rim of his glass. "If I tell you my name will you tell me yours and we will leave it there. I'm Damon Salvatore, the longer you are a vampire my name will probably come up."
You laughed at his comment and looked up from the menu you were reading.
"I'm Mrs Mikaelson."
Damon nearly fell off his chair. He backed away from her. "But I know all the Mikaelson siblings and you aren't one and you certainly don't look like one of the dead ones."
"That's because I'm not a Mikaelson by blood." She said looking back at her menu without a care.
"Wait are you telling me you married one of those lunatics?!" "Are you crazy?!" Damon patronised.
"Can you guess which?" She said fluttering her eyelashes at him.
"Elijah is far too moral and stuck up to make his wife run across states. He would at least provide her with a driver."
Damon had now sat down again.
She laughed.
It was then that the barman appeared with a towel drying his hands. He must have been in the back clearing up.
"DAMON!" He shouted. "I thought I told you to tell people we were closed."
Damon ignored him.
"And considering Rebekah's fascination with boys I -"
"Wait why are you talking about Rebekah?!" The boy behind the bar exclaimed.
"Keep your thong on Donovan, she's not dating women, just wet flannels like you, now do you mind I'm having a conversation with - " he looked at you realising he didn't know your first name.
"Veera" you responded quickly.
"Veera Mikaelson" Damon added looking at Matt who looked visibly shocked and confused.
"She's married to one of them and making me play a very fun game to figure out which" he sarcastically remarked.
"What about Klaus?" Matt joined in.
"Really?" Said Damon. "I thought he was always against marrying mortals, I thought he was an elitist. "
She looked down at her lap.
Damon clocked it. "But youre in transition.." "and that's why you're running!" He exclaimed like he had just broken a code.
Fed up with this now she looked at Matt, "Can I just have a burger please? This is getting terribly boring."
Matt scurried off to the kitchen, once out of sight Damon grabbed her wrist. " If you are here to do your husband's dirty work I will kill you and I won't do it nicely" Suddenly she felt a pulling in her arm and it went hot, it felt like something was seeping into her, but she ignored it.
"On the other hand, if you really are here to escape Klaus, you can stay with me, me and my brother live with a human girl Elena, she owns the deed to our house and any vampire has to be invited in. You will be safe there."
"Thank you" she whispered, stunned by the kindness of this stranger.
Matt returned with a doggy bag with a burger and a large fries. "Hope this helps" he says putting it down on the counter in front of her. "Damon take her with you I need to close up."
And with that they left the bar and started walking. She devoured the food like an animal as they walked down the street towards Damon's house. He looked at her judging out of the corner of his eye but she didn't care.
Eventually they arrived at a huge boarding house on the edge of town, Damon invited her in and she breathed a sigh of relief. He handed her a blood bag and reluctantly she took it and drank.
Damon showed her to a room where she could sleep. As she was changing she realised she was still wearing her garter from her wedding. A year rolled down her cheek as she took it off and placed it by her bed. She layed down and went to sleep.
