littol bee........ she just flew straight into me and started searching my shirt for flowers. queue me putting a flower in front of her. does not want to eat. attempts to eat sleeve. licks at my sleeve. i say okay girl stop that. i shove that flower into her face. climbs into flower and starts trying to eat the flower. queue me saying girl are you stupid. queue me shoving another flower into her face. FINALLY eats for a hot 5 minutes or so. queue me taking the flowers away from her and trying to put her on a flower bush so she doesnt freeze. moves into the crevices into my sleeves. i think okay, shes probably freezing, so i keep her around for a little while longer. 15 minutes later, queue me and my friend just barely managing to coax the bee onto flower bush. mission impossible turned into mission success!!...

It takes a bit of backstory to explain why this is good news.

Some endangered species laws were written before invertebrate conservation (insects, molluscs, etc.) was taken into consideration, so the language of the laws does not explicitly include these groups of animals. For example, the California Endangered Species Act states that endangered species can be mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, or fish.

Historically, aquatic invertebrates (lobster, clams, etc.) were included under the umbrella of “fish”, but courts have now ruled that terrestrial invertebrates can also be lumped into the “fish” category and therefore protected under the California Endangered Species Act.

Thanks to this ruling, threatened species of native bumblebee will now be able to receive legal protection.
