Saying “some disabled people CAN'T lose weight due to symptoms of their condition”

Not only is this not true in the slightest, this belief stems from the ableist and fatphobic belief that disabled people are inherently unhealthy.

Tell that to my obesity medicine specialist who is currently working with me on trying to lose weight safely — and I will say BECAUSE I WANT TO — not because I have been told to do so. I have not been able to lose weight using several interventions.

Disabled people DO NOT HAVE TO lose weight. But if we WANT to lose weight, some of us are prevented due to our conditions and interactions between them.

My dad has type 1 diabetes and struggles to lose weight, this can go the other way where some conditions make it hard for others to gain weight.

That as a statement doesn’t stem from ableism or fatphobia, it’s a general statement that many within the community use to explain why they struggle with weight loss.

Also other conditions make self care really difficult, with that can come weight gain, my experience with depression has had me in severe episodes where all I can do is keep eating and not get up.
