Lethal Injection
Lethal injection is a method used for capital punishment. It was first proposed in 1888 but was not developed until much later. Nazi Germany used lethal injection to kill prisoners during World War II. The first legal injection after this was in Texas in 1982, when Charles Brooks Jr. was executed for murder. It is thought to be a more humane method and is also cheaper than other forms of execution.
This method of execution is legal in China, Thailand, Guatemala, the Maldives, Vietnam, Taiwan and Nigeria (although the last two are yet to use it), it was also used in the Philippines until the death penalty was abolished in 2006.
In the USA, the process begins with the prisoner being strapped to a gurney and an IV being placed in each arm (only one is needed, the second is back up). A heart monitor is fitted and the curtain is open allowing witnesses to see and the prisoner. Usually, then a series of three drugs are given in a set sequence to render the person unconscious before paralysing the respiratory muscles and/ or causing cardiac arrest. The three drugs are generally as follows:
1. Sodium thiopental or pentobarbital: a short-acting barbiturate and anaesthetic that makes the person unconscious
2. Vecuronium bromide: A muscle relaxant that causes paralysis of the muscles including the diaphragm and respiratory system
3. Potassium chloride: a potassium salt that increases the concentration of potassium to stop the heartbeat
Death is pronounced when the heart stops beating. Typically the procedure lasts around 7-11 minutes.
There has been a recent switch in the USA to the 'one drug method.'
The supply of the drugs used for lethal injection remains a controversial topic. Several countries, including those in the European Union, have banned the sale of drugs used in lethal injection to the USA.
