A Kingdom's Fall
She pushed aside the thorned branch, the sharp needles piercing her hand. Nothing but a flesh wound. The path was becoming a forgotten slash of golden paint in history. No one came here anymore. After the history of this place. Why would they? Not after the history of this place. Not after the fire.
Her mind drifted back to when he'd first taken her here, his own little secret kingdom. A kingdom whose drawbridge he'd let down, and welcomed her inside.
"It's a cottage" she'd remarked at the grandeur he was pretending was blatantly there.
"A palace, my dear" He'd said an outstretched hand as he set a needle down on a record player.
She shook her head, and ripped herself out of her thoughts. She couldn't let her mind wonder. Not yet.
She cleared the path of the last few thorny branches. The walls, once white walls, now grey with ash, and the door barely on its hinges. The garden that lay silently outside the house, had now become a kingdom of ants, and spiders. The girl chuckled to herself, and smiled softly. A kingdom. He'd made her plant the seeds around the tree that he claimed was as old as him.
She began to make her way through the kingdom that lay at the base of it and looked up towards the top of it. The ladder was still there, the one he'd nailed in just for her, and at the top, a small bench.
"What're you doing up there?" She'd called up at him, standing with her arms folded. He'd laid him apple to rest precariously in a tree branch.
"Thought you were never coming back?" He'd called back, a smirk playing on his lips. She'd remained silent and smiled as she glared up at him. "Come on up?" He'd said, pleased. Silently she'd made her way up the ladder. "I wanna show you something" He'd said as he helped pull her up. "Close your eyes"
"Fuck off"
"Do it. I've got you" He'd whispered softly. "Don't you trust me?"
"Asshole"
"Don't you just know it" He'd chuckled as he held her tightly. He'd settled her on a tree branch. 'Safe'. "Open your eyes" He'd said his hands wrapped tightly around her waist.
She'd opened her eyes and before her lay the world.
"Beautiful?" He'd asked from behind her.
"How did you..?" She'd began until he cut her off
"Magic, my dear."
She gasped as a insect bit her back out from her memories. "Fuck!" She shouted and batted away the bug. She sighed and shook her head. Gotta keep going.
She made her way towards the ruins of the palace, and to the rotten, unhinged gate. The girl pushed the palace drawbridge open, with a deathly creak. On the path just after the gate lay a tile, with two hand prints scarred into it. She kneeled before it. Placing her hand in the smaller print, her palm fitting perfectly. Then into the bigger one , and closed her eyes letting out a deep breath, as her lips curled into a mournful smile.
"We better not get stuck here." She'd said laughing, as the concrete cut into her knees. "ow" she'd whispered
"We won't even be able to call the police," he'd laughed, as he took off his jacket and shifted to it under her knees.
They'd knelt there for a few minutes more. "That should do it" He'd said, and instantly she'd stood up, but the boy did not, "I can't - I can't move" He'd said frantically, looking up at her, his eyes wide with fear.
"What?" She'd shouted and began to pull in him.
"I can't move!" He'd cried, and tear had begun to fill up her own eyes, at which point he'd removed his hand with ease and fell back laughing.
"You Asshole!" She'd screamed straddling him and wiping her hands over him, giggkes erupting from both of them. Until he'd sat up and kissed her. Making her fall silent. Making him fall silent. " I'd better leave" She'd said picking herself up and wiping down her skirt.
"Yeah..." He'd said. The King silent and shy for once. He'd ran his fingers through his hair, and avoided eye contact. "Tomorrow?" He'd asked hopefully
"We'll see." She'd quietly replied.
The girl watched her past ghost leave, and sighed as she continued toward the house letting the memory fade behind her. Her hand meeted with the rickety old door, half of which was burnt away to ash.
"You came back?" He'd said the following day after the incident. He'd stood up to greet her, "I didn't think you'd -"
"I'm here. I wanted to see you" She'd smiled as she'd walked past him whilst he'd held the door for her. To the table, she'd walked, to see a blueprint.
The girl walked over to the now burnt, black table, and traced her fingers over the place the paper had once been, and turned, watching the ghost which lived in her memory walk over.
He'd walked around to the other side of the table and smirked, leaning on it. "It's a treehouse" He'd said, placing his hand on the paper.
"I can see that" She'd laughed, and smiled up at him.
"I'm gonna put it in our tree." He'd smirked, glancing out the window to the tall oak that stood out front.
"Our tree?" She'd asked. To which he'd only smiled and nodded.
The ghosts soon faded to the dance they'd shared that night. The record playing, and them dancing together, in their refuge from the world. A kingdom of their own. A cottage of safety. She'd left early in the morning, with a kiss and a promise to see him tomorrow.
The girl watched her ghost leave the house, and walked to the window, remembering the next morning.
She'd awoken early. And had gotten to the forest easily, no protest coming from her drunken father. She'd trekked through the thick trees. following his pink arrows that he'd painted upon every third tree. As she'd gotten closer, she could smell the burning, and she'd heard the shouting. And the water falling. She'd begun to run. As she'd gotten closer she'd begun to see it. Her kingdom. His kingdom. Up in flames. Engulfed in fire. A fire that coursed through the cottage. She'd looked for him. For his solemn presence on the grass, but he was nowhere to be found.
She'd ran back to the town, and slammed herself against his front door, only to be chased away by his addicted mother. When she'd gotten back to the cottage, and timidly made her way through the branches, she'd seen the smoldering corpse on a stretcher. She'd seen the ruined building, and she'd seen his brother weep over the body, as people assured him that the identification, was not definite.
She'd waited in her room, and at the kitchen table. She'd waited against his locker, shrouded in flowers from students, as everyone knew that it must be him. She'd held her breath when they used the dental records to identify him. She'd cried with the stranger who had been born from the same womb as the boy.
The girl wiped a tear from her face. Watching the ghosts of the witnesses of that tragic day fade away back into her memory.
And from behind her she heard his voice. "Still visiting me?" He said.
"Of course," She said turning to face his spirit. He sat on the table, as cocky as ever. His smile still playing on his lips.
"How long has it been, my dear?" He asked offering his hand for a dance.
"Too long," She said, taking his hand, and dancing with him once more.
