Two Henrys by Kevin Allison (This Can’t Be Happening Collection)
4 out of 5 stars ✨✨✨✨
Synopsis:
Coming out can be awkward enough—let alone coming out in the 1970s, in Ohio, as a Catholic schoolboy. In this fearless and funny true story, the host and founder of the hit podcast RISK! shares all.
From first grade through junior high, twelve-year-old Kevin and his best friend, Ben, were inseparable. But when Kevin divulged his biggest secret, Ben froze him out. The pint-size cold war lasted two years—until they went head-to-head for student council president. Team Ben’s smear campaign began. The school took sides. And Kevin decided to run with it.
Kevin Allison’s Two Henrys is part of This Can’t Be Happening, a collection of four true stories about making the best of a worst-case scenario curated by Kevin Allison, creator of the hit true storytelling podcast RISK! Outrageous, alarming, triumphant, and sometimes embarrassing, these fearless confessionals can be read, or listened to, in one what-on-earth-would-I-do? sitting.
My Review:
Loved it.
What a great and touching story of discovering oneself, being true to oneself, and the ups and downs of friendship.

What can break a best friend friendship of many years? In Kevin Allison’s short story, Two Henrys, it is Kevin’s homosexuality. Kevin is best friends with Ben since kindergarten. They tell everything to each other and are into their own insider talk. But as they grow up, Kevin realizes that he is gay and feels bad that he is and also that he probably can’t tell Ben despite their close friendship. Eventually the true comes out and their friendship ends with everyone in their Catholic high school awkwardly wondering why they are not friends anymore.
What is great about Kevin Allison’s short story is how much detail you get that you understand the friendship him and Ben had and the dilemma that occurs. You understand Kevin as he experiences his sexuality, first resisting it, then panicking, and finally secretly accepting it. His friendship with Ben is a roller coaster of wondering if he will true him and the trails of growing up straight. It is quite sad when they stop being friends and you even feel worried when the school election ends up with them facing up with each other.
The amount of character empathy for Kevin is massive as you experience it thru his eyes. Even though he is one of the most beloved students in the school, you know how tough he has it. My only complain of the book is that it pretty much ends with a friendship reconnect event between Ben and Kevin but I wanted to know what happen after? Did they stay friends, best friends? Did Ben ultimately accept Kevin as he is? Really felt like the book just ended without a real resolution.
7 Mile Bridge (Two Henrys)
Brewery : Two Henrys Beer : 7 Mile Bridge Style : IPA / English Style IPA Variance : None
7 / 10
This review took me a while to start because I was too busy shitting my pants laughing watching Jim Jefferies’ new special on Netflix but I think I’ve regained my focus. 7 mile bridge is an impressive… well, bridge that was built between 1909 to 1912 that is still used today just not for vehicles and this beer is a tribute to that. Now, I’m not one for bridges at all and most of them scare the shit out of me when I’m going over them because I feel like they are going to collapse under my tires like fucking Galloping Gertie but thankfully now I have an official beverage to ease my nerves. English style IPAs are always an interesting change of pace from what’s common on the marketplace today because of it’s malt front flavors but honestly it’s nice to have something break up all these intensely hoppy brews even if it’s not the best on the market. This has an interesting citrus and lightly floral mild hop flavor to start before some caramel malt flavor mixes in with a nice amount of sweetness and that’s about it. I’m going to keep this one on the short side but I feel like the 7 I scored this fits the name of the beer so that makes me feel a little better about giving it out. This is a good beer to try for your first IPA because of it’s hop-subdued flavors but keep in mind that it does get a lot more palate punishing from here. As for you members of the bastard drinking crew out there, pick this up if it’s readily available but don’t go too far out of your way to snag it.

Hop Tycoon (Two Henrys)
Brewery : Two Henrys Beer : Hop Tycoon Style : Double IPA / Imperial IPA / DIPA Variance : None
8 / 10
When I first saw the name of this beer I chubbed up a little bit because I thought it might have some relation to Roller Coaster Tycoon (first two only). I mean, what could be better than making a coaster that shoots your guests into kingdom come while grabbing pissed off patrons and tossing their ass in a lake to drown? Well, adding this beer into the mix definitely is one way to make it better and pretty much the only way I could think of because that game is pretty damn flawless. Two Henrys decided to be the real life Santa from my dreams and hooked me up with a bunch of super unique brews to try out and this one is the first of the bunch. I decided to start with a style everyone has tried before with no additions added just so you could get a feel for what these guys can do with a baseline before I start throwing all their crazy additions at you and honestly it’s a pretty good starting point. If you are looking for a super hopped up DIPA than this is not for you because they decided to take a more balanced approach with a nice malt sweetness with floral hop notes to start off with a minor alcohol flavor mixing in quickly after balancing out bitter and sweet with a little more hop flavor joining in at the end with more malt leaving you with a super session-able brew even at it’s 8.2% ABV. For all you shit beer drinkers out there, this beer’s percentage is equivalent to about two fucking trash can Miller Lite’s so instead of drinking two cans of off colored urine water you could be sucking this beauty down instead. This is a great beer to get you into the world of DIPAs but keep in mind that it get’s much hoppier from here and as for you professionals out there, pick this up and enjoy this summer because it’ll definitely hit the spot. Cheers!
