The vibes in the BBQ restaurant were blazing with cheers and drunken freedom. Glasses clinked and clanked together. Beers ran smoothly down each customers’ throats. And a blistering sound of enjoyment intoxicated the air as Shinyu continued to grill the massive cut of steak over the open stove.
The flame roared in delight, barely managing to avoid kissing his sweat-dripped skin.
With the arm holding the tongs, he wiped at his forehead, braving the heat whilst the older men he served exploded in laughter over something that Shinyu thought wasn’t really all that amusing.
The first few hours of the night rolled by calmly. Routinely. Like they always tended to do during Fridays. That addicting feeling of knowing that the next day, you wouldn’t need to drag your feet to work despite your mind screaming you no.
It was in the middle of his night shift, around 1 a.m. that Shinyu felt his back pocket buzzing against his skin.
At first he thought it was a text, but the sensation prolonged. His gloves were still on, mask still attached to his jaw, and tongs still in his hand, when he reached over to check his phone screen.
There, brightly lit on his phone, was the nickname he’d been using for you. Countless different variations of heart emojis following, like they were part of your identity.
Shinyu’s chocolate eyes widened by a fraction.
And without thought, he answered the call with no hesitation.
The salary men at his table watched with glazed eyes, drunkenly pointing their fingers and cooing with romantic suspicion.
“Girlfriend problems, probably.” One uttered sleepily.
Another harshly banged their palms on the table, slouching against their chair whilst repeating, “The meat is going to burn! The meat! The mEAT!”
But Shinyu didn’t care.
You called.
And that was all that mattered to him.
Muffled noises could be heard from the other end of the line as the sound of you stumbling and uttering profanities filled his ears.
With what Shinyu would describe as a very adorable “Oof!” you continued to lament under your breath. Something about a stupid rock.
Trying to hold himself back from laughing, Shinyu relaxed in the atmosphere of your strange sounds. Then, he spoke.
Softly.
Carefully.
And with so much affection that the older men around the table all decided to shut up and eavesdrop into the conversation.
“[name],”
A long beat passed without a response.
Your voice grumbled in disdain.
“Little brat!”
Shinyu raised his brow, a little surprised at the venom in your voice.
“[name]?” He repeated, a little more playful and down-right confused.
You didn’t answer.
“...Are you drunk?”
The sound of cars passing by filled your side of the line.
You sighed heavily.
Then, the line fell silent.
Nothing but the sound of your slow breathing against the light gust of the wind. It would’ve been comforting if your next words didn’t leave your lips.
“Why does no one love me?”
Small. Quiet. Exhausted.
The phrase filtered through you like it physically hurt to say aloud.
You didn’t even get to say anything else before Shinyu dropped everything and ran out of the restaurant.
It was all so hazy to you.
The time you spent alone, your phone squishing against your blushing cheeks. The sound of heavy footsteps running on the other end of the line. The panting breaths alongside them. The wind flowing through your hot skin.
You waited for what felt like minutes on end.
Then a touch at your wrist startled you cold.
A stranger? You couldn’t tell.
Your natural instincts kicked in, wriggling against their hold, fighting against their touch. Their hands moved to your shoulders, they held you gently, saying something that you couldn’t quite catch in your blurry state. The alcohol stole their words before you could latch on to them.
Everything was so muffled.
You shut your eyes tightly. Head pounding in irregular beats. Your weakened fists thundering small punches against their chest, attempting to pry their hands off of you.
As if child’s play, your hands were easily caught in theirs.
It’s at the familiar warmth and size of their hands that you stopped your thrashing.
Ever so slowly, you opened your eyes, craning your head to catch their face.
The wind passed by with a delicate hush as you stared into his eyes.
Your dull orbs twinkled in despair, your expression lost.
As soon as you met his familiar gaze, something in you just snapped.
“Yu?”
Is all you managed to croak out before your lips began to wobble. Your past tears from an hour before, slowly began to resurface, the salty liquid pooling along your already reddened waterline.
One by one, the tears streamed down your face.
You were broken. You were lost. And the sight of Shinyu, who was somehow standing before you, work apron still on, gazing at you like you held the key to everything, just made you crumble all-the-more.
He looked at you like you were the only thing that mattered.
But you definitely didn’t feel that way.
Manually attempting to calm your breaths, you tried to put on a brave face. You wanted to talk to him without crumpling up into a desolate ball of misery. But seeing how devastated you were, you weren’t confident you could do even that.
Giving a very slow blink, you took a small, unstable step forward.
That was all the consent Shinyu needed to slam himself into your arms, engulfing you with his whole being. As he wrapped his arms around you, his fingers gently brushed against the small friendship bracelet dangling from your wrist. The friendship bracelet you swore to never take off. The friendship bracelet that always led him to you without fail.
You melted into it with ease.
You didn’t even care to process how he could’ve possibly found you without you telling him where you were.
You just needed him right now.
And once your face met the warmth of his body, the waterworks came back.
You were a sobbing mess.
Your arms held tighter unto his fluffy sweater, salty tears staining through the material.
“He said I was too possessive,” you bawled between stuttered breaths.
“He said I was becoming a burden—”
Shinyu squeezed you tighter upon hearing your every word.
“He…” you paused, sniffling in the process.
“He said he was scared.” Your voice came quieter this time. You weren’t sure why, as you recalled the way your ex trembled in fear—almost disgust.
You didn’t know what you did wrong.
You tried your very best to be the perfect partner. You showed up even when you were sick. You expressed your love in every possible manner— words of affirmation, gift-giving, physical touch, space—you did it all, and it was going well.
You were multiple months in, comfortable, head-over-heels in love.
You were planning a future together and you thought that maybe… just maybe, this one would work out, this time.
Maybe you weren’t hard to love.
That maybe you weren’t just unlucky like you had thought.
You snuggled your face deeper into him, and he knew that this wasn’t the time, but Shinyu could feel his heart hammering against his chest.
This version of you.
The you that held him like he was the only one left in the world that could understand you. The you that gave him all your attention. This heartbroken version of you that ate at him so badly that it made Shinyu want to do despicable things to your ex.
…This you, that he grew infatuated by.
He knew he shouldn’t.
He knew it was wrong.
But the way you clung to him helplessly because you had no one else you could trust. The way you treasured his existence like it was the last thing keeping you sane.
…Shinyu…he liked it.
He was all you had.
And something about that beautiful vulnerability that sent him spiraling. Something about you needing him, crumbling before him in hopes that he'd stitch you right back up.
Oh... he didn't know why it felt so good.
He hated seeing you cry. Really, he did. More than anything in the world.
Or at least, that’s what he thought.
He didn't know what was happening to him.
The more you sobbed, the closer you pulled him, the more his heart squeezed in a sickening delight.
Elated, was the word. The feeling that tingled within him like an incurable disease.
He shouldn't have been feeling this way. You were upset. You needed him to be present.
But the intensifying blush at his neck wouldn’t let up.
“Ugh,”
Unintentional.
A whimper of joy made you pause in your sorrow.
You made some space between you, looking up at him in mild worry.
“Yu? Are you okay?”
Even in this situation, you were looking out for him first.
Could anyone else as pure as you truly exist in this world?
Shinyu didn’t think so.
“Yes, darling,”
He brought you close to him again, caressing your head against his chest.
“I'm just fine.”
The pet name you were so used to hearing sounded a little different as he said it.
But you didn’t mind, because Shinyu was by your side.
And with him by your side, you were positive you’d be able to get back on your feet and move on, right?
There, in the intimacy of your shared emotions. In the large arms of the person you thought as your best friend. You gave yourself to him.
Once again.
Absolutely oblivious to the silent beeping humming softly within your friendship bracelet. Utterly clueless to the fact that the person who had been planting the seed of doubt. The person who had been whispering words of discord and heavy laden threats. The person who had been orchestrating all your heartbreaks with a sweet voice and a haunting presence behind the scenes, was him.
Shinyu would never hurt you. All you had to do was stay by his side, and only his.
That was all.
He loved you so much.
His muscles flexed against you. If he could've morph into you, he would’ve likely done so by now.
“It’s okay.” He whispered softly in your ear.
Your voice of reasoning. Your angel of hope.
“You have me,” he continued.
With an airy kiss to the top of your head, he moved a stray strand from your face.
Momentarily glancing up at the shimmering stars, he smiled at nothing in particular, his eyes displaying a deep sense of peace. An unshakable devotion, a silent desire to your very existence.
“You’ll always have me.” He stroked your back in comfort, leaning down to plant another kiss. This time, dangerously close to your lips.
“I promise.”

synopsis:
They weren’t supposed to fall.
Not in that apartment.
Not after midnight.
Not with so many things left unsaid.
But some feelings don’t ask for permission—
they just linger.
Your steps halted right across the street, right in front of the campus gate you’d walked through far too many times.
There stood Shinyu—white shirt, black tote bag, hair slightly tousled by the wind.
He was talking to a girl you didn’t recognize. She looked about the same age as him. Maybe a classmate. Maybe someone from the same department. Maybe… anyone.
You didn’t know why your feet suddenly hesitated. Instead of walking up to him like usual—teasing, saying hi in that half-joking way—you just stood there, letting the distance remain.
“What am I even doing just standing here?” you muttered under your breath, but still didn’t move. They were still talking. The girl tapped Shinyu’s arm lightly, laughing at something he said.
He nodded, the corners of his eyes curving a little as he replied.
And in that moment, you realized one thing. You didn’t like it.
Then, as if he could sense your gaze, Shinyu turned. His eyes immediately found yours across the street.
And his expression shifted. A bit confused. A bit questioning.
You quickly looked down at your phone, pretending to scroll. Pretending not to see.
But your legs only moved again when you heard his voice calling from across the road.
“Harin?”
You looked up.
He had already crossed the street. The girl from before was nowhere in sight.
“Were you waiting for me?” he asked, in that usual calm tone of his.
You shrugged, nonchalant. “Not really. Just passing by.”
He didn’t respond. Only tilted his head slightly, watching your face a little longer than usual.
Thenㅡ
“Yo! Shinyu! So this is where you’ve been!”
You turned your head.
Two guys walked up casually—one in a grey hoodie with messy hair, and the other tidier, wearing round glasses and a friendly smile he quickly directed toward you.
“Oh—uh, hey,” Dohoon greeted politely, giving you a slight nod.
Shinyu cleared his throat. “This is Harin.”
“Ah…” Jihoon raised his eyebrows and grinned. “That Harin?”
Shinyu shot him a warning look, but it was too late—Dohoon had already joined in with a teasing smile, even patting Shinyu’s shoulder without realizing.
“Shinyu mentions you all the time.”
You blinked, sneaking a glance at Shinyu, who now seemed quieter than usual.
“What kind of things?” you asked coolly, your tone clearly testing the waters.
“Oh, you know… random stuff,” Jihoon replied casually. “Like how someone tends to cook when they’re mad, or—”
“Jihoon.” Shinyu’s voice was soft, but firm enough to make both his friends laugh and back off.
“We were just about to grab dinner. Wanna join us?” Dohoon asked Shinyu, then looked at you. “Or… maybe Harin wants to come too?”
You looked at Shinyu, waiting for him to speak first. But he simply turned to you and asked gently, “Do you want to come?”
Such a simple question. But you felt something shift in the air between you.
“I’m… not hungry,” you finally said.
Dohoon and Jihoon exchanged a quick glance, then shrugged casually. “Alright. Next time then,” Jihoon said with a polite smile.
Shinyu didn’t say anything. But just before he turned to follow his friends, he paused beside you.
He didn’t touch you. But his voice low, almost like a whisper—reached you clearly.
“If you were really just passing by… why did you stand there for five minutes?”
You held your breath. And had no idea how to answer.
***
Later that night, you found yourself curled up on the couch in Sooa’s apartment, a warm mug of citron tea between your hands. The room was dimly lit, only the soft glow of a lamp near the bookshelf flickering as the city lights spilled through the window.
Sooa plopped down next to you with a dramatic sigh. “Work was insane today,” she groaned, tossing her phone aside. “Finance team kept sending back revisions like they were allergic to approving anything.”
You chuckled lightly. “Hyunjae?”
“Obviously.” She rolled her eyes. “But enough about that. What’s with you? You look like someone just told you your favorite café ran out of tiramisu.”
You hesitated, taking a sip of your tea to stall.
Sooa narrowed her eyes, elbowing you gently. “Don’t even try to brush it off. I’ve known you too long.”
You exhaled through your nose, half-smiling. “It’s nothing. Just… weird vibes today.”
“Weird vibes?” She raised a brow. “Where? Office? Or…” Her voice trailed off, and then she gave you that knowing look.
You didn’t answer right away. Instead, your thumb traced the rim of your mug.
Sooa leaned in a little. “Wait. Is this about Shinyu?”
Your eyes snapped to her for a second too long.
“Ha!” She pointed dramatically. “I knew it! That pause? That guilty look? Classic.”
“It’s not like that,” you muttered, not entirely convinced by your own words.
“Mhm. Let me guess,” Sooa leaned back, folding her arms. “He was talking to someone and you didn’t like how it looked?”
Your silence spoke louder than anything else.
Sooa grinned, smug and unbothered. “Oh my God. You’re jealous.”
“I’m not—jealous,” you said quickly, defensive.
“You’re totally jealous.”
You groaned, setting your mug down. “She looked… friendly.”
“And he looked… happy?”
You didn’t respond.
Sooa tilted her head, voice softening. “Hey. You know my brother, right? He’s weird about people. Especially girls. If he looked happy, maybe it’s because he was trying to be polite. Or maybe because someone else was watching.”
Your brows drew together. “You think he knew I was there?”
Sooa smirked, playful. “Please. That boy has your presence radar set on high sensitivity.”
You bit your lip, trying to hide your reaction.
And Sooa, of course, noticed. Her smile shifted—gentler now, almost fond.
“You really like him, huh?”
This time, you couldn’t dodge the question.
Your answer came out barely above a whisper. “…I don’t know.”
But Sooa didn’t press. She just reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear.
“Then take your time figuring it out. But just so you know…” She paused, lips tugging into a smile again. “He’s been figuring you out for a while now.”
Time passes by. You were mid-sentence, half-listening to Sooa ramble about office drama, when the sound of the front door unlocking reached your ears.
Click.
Your body stiffened before you could help it.
Sooa glanced at you, then toward the door. Speak of the devil,” she muttered under her breath, almost amused.
The apartment door swung open gently. Shinyu stepped inside, still in his white shirt, the sleeves now rolled up to his elbows. His tote bag hung loosely off one shoulder, and his eyes scanned the room—then landed on you.
For a moment, everything went quiet again. The tea in your mug had gone lukewarm. Your heart, inexplicably, had not.
Your eyes met his. And that was the problem.
Because in that half-second of silence, something passed between you and him. Something neither of you had words for.
You were the first to look away.
“I should go,” you blurted, already rising to your feet.
Sooa blinked. “Wait, now?”
“Yeah, I, um… I’ve got some stuff at home. No need to stay over tonight.” You grabbed your tote, avoiding both their gazes.
But just as you were reaching for the doorknob, fingers brushed around your wrist—gentle, but firm.
Shinyu.
You froze.
His grip wasn’t tight. He wasn’t trying to stop you. Not really.
But still, he didn’t let go.
“…It’s late,” he said, voice quiet, as if trying not to wake something fragile in the air.
You turned slightly, just enough to meet his eyes.
“I’ll be fine,” you said, a little too fast.
His brows knit together faintly. “Did something happen?”
You opened your mouth then closed it again.
Behind you, Sooa wisely said nothing. The room held its breath with you.
“No,” you finally whispered. “I just… want to go home tonight.”
Shinyu didn’t answer.
But his hand slowly let go.
Your wrist felt colder the second it did.
You didn’t look back as you stepped out the door.
But if you had, you would’ve seen him still standing there, hand slightly lifted, as if he regretted letting go at all.
***
The air outside was heavier than you remembered. Cooler, too, even though the summer hadn’t ended.
You walked without really knowing where your thoughts were going—just you, your tote bag, and the silence that followed you like a second shadow.
By the time you reached your home, the sky had darkened into a soft indigo. You didn’t bother turning on all the lights—just one lamp in the corner, enough to chase away the feeling that you were being swallowed by your own thoughts.
You sat at the edge of your bed, phone still clutched in one hand.
No new messages.
Not that you were expecting one. Not that you weren’t.
You stared at the screen a little longer than necessary before sighing and tossing it onto the bedspread.
You could still feel the ghost of his hand around your wrist—his voice, low and unsure, asking if something had happened.
And the worst part?
You didn’t even know how to answer that.
A few streets away, in Sooa’s apartment, Shinyu stood in the hallway with his hands tucked in his pockets.
He hadn’t said much after you left. Not to Sooa. Not to anyone.
He’d just stared at the door a little longer than necessary. Like maybe if he stood there long enough, you’d come back.
“Are you okay?” Sooa had asked.
He didn’t answer right away.
Then finally, “…She didn’t even look back.”
Sooa tilted her head. “Maybe she didn’t want you to see her face.”
He blinked, slowly.
Then turned away. “I’ll head out. Got stuff to do.”
Sooa didn’t stop him.
But as he walked out the door, she muttered under her breath, “You’re both hopeless.”
And she wasn’t wrong.

"I want to try cookies."
Anna didn't look up from the computer where she was digitizing old recipes. "You'll have to come back tomorrow. We sold out today."
Alarik sighed. "No, not eating them. Making them. I want to try baking cookies."
That made Anna look up, her eyes narrowed.
"You know I've been given explicit instruction not to let you anywhere near the oven. Not since the Souffle Incident."
"First of all, that was years ago. Second, I want to bake cookies. Those are easier and far less likely to… well…"
"Explode?"
"...Yes. Please, Anna. Elsa's running errands, and I have just enough time to try to surprise her. Do something nice."
Anna huffed and rolled her eyes. "Damn you and your sweetness. Fine, I'll help you."
Alarik grinned and hugged her, prompting another mock sigh before she threw her arms around him and squeezed until he was gasping for air.
"These better be chocolate cookies. Otherwise I'm kicking you out." Anna said when she released him.
"Double chocolate with fudge frosting."
Anna's slap on his back caused him to double over. "Now we're talking! Come on, we've got work to do!"

synopsis:
They weren’t supposed to fall.
Not in that apartment.
Not after midnight.
Not with so many things left unsaid.
But some feelings don’t ask for permission—
they just linger.
➖ 01.
You slowly unbuttoned the top of your shirt as you let yourself fall sitting onto the edge of the couch, feeling so exhausted.
“Ugh, I don’t get why they always blaming usーthe content creator. Like, weren’t there a bunch of people working on it too?” you muttered bitterly.
Shinyu came over quietly and sat beside you, offering a cup of warm tea without a word.
You took it with a tired sigh and took a sip “Thanks… But seriously, do they just see us as punching bags?” you said, your voice rising slightly with frustration.
The warmth of the tea didn’t stop the cold spiral of your complaints from pouring out.
“Yuya?” you called again, still restless.
“Yeah?” he finally answered, calm as ever. “Still not enough?”
You exhaled softly, your body relaxing just a little. “I think I’m a bit calmer now than before…”
As if on cue, his arms opened wide—silent, but welcoming. You didn’t hesitate. You leaned in and let yourself be held.
There it was again—his scent. Clean laundry with a quiet softness that was just… him. It wrapped around you like a gentle blanket, soothing your nerves, slowing your thoughts.
“Sometimes I wonder…” you whispered, “how are you seem maturer than me?”
“Is that… a problem?” he asked, his voice low near your ear.
You shook your head quickly. “No. It’s not. It just makes me feel… a little self-conscious.”
There were moments like this, when guilt crept in—uninvited and quiet. But comfort always followed close behind. Because the truth was, Shinyu wasn’t supposed to be in your life like this. He was just your closest friend’s little brother. That’s all he was. At least, that’s how it started.
But to anyone who saw the way he looked at you or the way you leaned into him now it was clear your relationship had gone far beyond just “a friend’s lil brother.”
Back when overtime was your second home, you often crashed at Sooa’s apartment—just for a nap or overnight.
Shin Sooa, after all, was your old college classmate. The two of you had joined the same MT program straight out of university.
Sooa lived with her younger brother, Shin Jeonghwan—known more casually as Shinyu. A final-year university student whose his campus is not far from the apartment.
“Sooa’s not home yet?” you murmured, your face still buried in his shoulder.
He gently shook his head, wordless.
“Why?”
“She went to Busan. Training. I thought it was the same project as yours.”
Your head snapped up, eyes narrowing at him, “Busan? Until when? Why am I only hearing about this now?”
Shinyu shifted his gaze forward, deliberately avoiding your eyes.
“Three days,” he said quietly.
You paused for a moment, thoughts still tangled in your head, before nodding slowly.
So that meant tonight, once again, you’d be sleeping in Sooa’s room—without its real owner in it.
“Yu… You don’t mind me being here again, do you?” you asked gently, almost cautiously.
Shinyu answered without turning to you.
“You’re sleeping in Sooa’s room. Why are you asking me?”
“Well, still… I might be disturbing your peace,” you murmured, lips pouting slightly in playful protest.
He gave no reply. Not even a glance.
Eventually, you stood up, brushing off the weight of your emotions with a small sigh.
“Okay then. I’m gonna shower. Thanks, Yuya for listening to my endless rants. I hope you never get tired of me.”
He didn’t stop you.
Didn’t reach out.
Didn’t pull you back into the warmth of his embrace like before.
He just let you go. Quietly.
As if your absence didn’t echo in the room he stayed in.
