(TWST) The Little Outsider- Introduction Chapter: The Mirror Speaks Again
Summary: A burst of unstable magic and suddenly a mysterious child appears before the Dark Mirror.
Disclaimer: I do not own TWST or any of its characters.
Warnings: Instead of using (Y/N) we are using Star just how in the game we are refer as Yuu. Uhh...Spoilers for those who haven't started the game? It's going to be based around the game due to the anime only having one season.
Authors Note: I've been deep into the trenches with TWST game, I came back to it once I heard about season one...let me tell you it hooked me. I'm back on the grinding of getting all those cards level up for book 7. If Star isn't working well with you readers, please let me know and depending on the majority, I will change it or not.
BIG ANNOUCEMENT: After having this account for like...I think 2 years or 3. I will be rebranding the name. I feel I am so much better at writing comfort stories especially Platonic Relationship Content. SimpCityy doesn't really reflect that so just a heads up if the name changes, I will be also doing a separate post and pin that.

The weekly staff and student council (aka those who blotted and certain first years) meeting was dragging on longer than anyone wanted. Housewardens of each dorm stood in a loose semicircle while Crowley ramble about "Campus safety," upcoming events and " the importance of not blowing up school property." Yuu stood near the back, half-listening, half-wondering if they could sneak out just how Grim did.
Then the Dark Mirror hummed.
Not loudly- but enough to make the floor vibrate under their feet. Malleus lifted his head, for once was invited thanks to Yuu, " That is no ordinary fluctuation." Before anyone could react, the Mirror flashed - a burst of white light that washed over the entire chamber. Papers flew. Crowley shrieked. Ace Swore. Riddle nearly dropped his clipboard. And then...a sound.
A small, frightened sniffle.
Everyone turned, A child maybe five or six sat on the cold stone in front of the Mirror. Their knees were pulled to their chest, tiny hands clutching a stuffed toy was looked like it had been loved for years. Their eyes were wide and watery, shimmering with leftover magic. They looked around the room, confused and scared.
Deuce froze, "They're just a kid?"
Leona sighed sharply. " Great. The Mirror's broken."
Azul interjected, " No. This was intentional. The Mirror doesn't summon by accident or alone."
Yuu's heart dropped into their stomach.
Another person?
Another outsider?
Why a child?
Why not send me home instead?
The Mirror glowed again, its voice echoing through the chamber:
" A star misplaced...seeking shelter in a world not their own."
The child flinched and pressed their face into their stuffed toy. Crowley panicked immediately. "A -A CHILD?! Why would the Mirror summon a child? I am not equipped for this! I don't even have childcare insurance!" Crewel glares at the headmage. " That is your concern Dire!?"
Yuu stepped forward slowly, their voice soft. "Hey...it's okay. You're safe. No one is going to hurt you." The child only peeked up at them, eyes big and scared, "Where's ...My mama...?"
The room fell slient.
Yuu knelt down, throat tight. " I...I don't know yet...but I'll help. I promise" As the child reached out and grabbed Yuu's sleeve, something inside Yuu twisted - a mix of fear, responsibility, and a painful question they couldn't shake.
If the Mirror can bring them here..., why can't it take me back?
Ramona: *Walks through the City of Flowers, looking at all the decorations*
Clover: The last Festival had Fire Spirits!
Ramona: I wonder what Spirits are native here
Hazel: What are the spirits?
Ramona: They're little Elemental Spirits that take the shape of small fairies, each Spirit have different bug wings and appearances along with color so you can pick each one out from the other
Clover: Imagine the fairies that our parents had to face to get the Weather Stone back, but imagine them a bit smaller than that, around the size of the biggest female prey mantis recorded, just slightly bigger though, about four cm bigger
Hazel: Amazing....
Clover: I hope we get to see a Water Spirit!!
Ramona: Oh yeah, we haven't seen Water, Light, Dark, Ice or Air yet!
???: RAMONA!
???: CLOVER!
??? and ???: *Runs over beaming* YOU BOTH CAME!

Anne: *Gasps offended* Hey, what about me!
Esmerelda and Phobeus: HI ANNE! *Smiles wide hugging the girl laughing happily*
Star: Who's kids are these, why do they look familiar..
???: They're ours.
Rollo: *Smiles, a brown haired woman beside him*
Ramona: Hey, Aunt Florina
Star, Hazel, Ophelia: FLORINA??!
Hazel: You talking about the same Florina that was Crowned Princesses Livia's best friend growing up?! That Florina, you're joking??!!
Star: How did THIS, bag THAT! AND MAKE THESE CUTIES
Ophelia: Guess opposites attract and a positive plus a negative popped out two positives
Rollo: *Glares at them offended* Detention once we get back...you both are gonna wash windows and clean classrooms alongside carrying books to me from the library......for a week
Star and Ophelia: NO FAIR, PROFESSOR!
Florina: Honey, be nice
Rollo: *Stiffens then relaxes when Florina pressed a kiss to his cheek*
Phobeus: DADDY!
Esmerelda: PAPA!
Rollo: *Hides a smile as the twins tugged on his clothing*
Esmerelda: Can we get lollipops shaped like a Water Spirit??!
Phobeus: Please, Please!
Rollo: *Sighs and smiles softly* Very well, drag me to the stand
Esmerelda and Phobeus: YAY! *Beams dragging their father away*
Star: *Shuffles closer to Florina* Did he bribe you with money?

The chamber was still glowing faintly from the Mirror's outburst when Crowley burst forward, feathers practically flying off his cloak. "Everyone remain calm!" he declared, voice cracking halfway through. "I. your ever-capable headmage, will handle this!" No one moved, not because they trusted him- but because the child sitting on the floor was too small, too still, and too out of place for anyone to look away. The kid sat with their stuffed toy clutched to their chest, eyes wide and unfocused. They didn't cry, they didn't speak after asking about his mama.
Trein stepped forward, ignoring Crowley entirely, "The child is in shock. We must approach gently." Lucius padded toward the child, tail swaying. The kids's glaze flicked toward the cat- the first sign of awareness but didn't reach out. Crewel folded his arms. "This is no ordinary summoning. The mirror has never brought forth a pup this young." Vargas nodded, unusually serious. "Even I can feel the magic on them."
Crowley puffed up again. "Yes, yes, very concerning indeed! Which is why I will take charge of this delicate situation!" He took one dramatic step toward the child, which caused the little one to flinched. You moved between them "Stop, you're scaring them." Crowley only froze mid-gesture, hand hovering awkwardly in the air , "I- scaring them? Me? Impossible! Children adore me!"
Crewel snorted, "Dire, even my Dalmatians have better instincts around frightened pups." The child's breathing quicken, fingers tightened around their stuffed toy. Yuu lowered their voice, " Hey, it's okay You're safe." Train crouched beside them. "Little one, do you know your name?" They open their mouth but only a breath escaped.
Crowley gasped dramatically. "Oh dear! A nameless child! A paperworks nightmare!" Crewel shuts him up " Dire," He warned, " choose your next words carefully." Crowley only clamped his beak-mask shut. The child only watched, eyes following between the two adults - big globes of eyes with tiny flecks glowing like stars.
Yuu exhaled softly, "....Star."
Vil nodded. " It suits them." He added. Ace smirks " Like a fallen star and landed here with us." The child now known as Star lowered their hands away from the stuffed toy and looks at Yuu. Yuu only leaned closer, " Star...do you like that?"
A pause but then Star shoved their face into the back of Yuu's knee. Train smiled faintly, " That's as good as a yes." Crowley nods, " Very well but who will take responsibility for Star while I contact the right people fo-" He watched as Star reached up suddenly, small arms lifting towards Yuu.
Crowley smiles " that's settle then!" Yuu only sighs " You were going to dump them on me anyways..." They mutter lifting up Star, making them grip their little hands on Yuu's shirt. Train spoke up, " Take them away from this, I bet they had enough of this crowd and noise." He nodded. As Yuu walked past the Housewardens and professors, Star peeked up at Yuu, whispering
"...Star..."
Yuu looked down before smiling, " Yeah, that's you."
Ramshackle Dorm creaked as Yuu pushed the door open with their shoulder, Star held securely in their arms. The child's tiny fingers were curled into Yuu's shirt, their stuffed toy squished between them like a shield. The dorm was still being a work in progress, still wasn't fancy but it was home.
And now...it was Stars first safe place in this world. A voice echoed deeper inside. " Took you long enough! I was starving! Did you bring snacks or-" Grim skidded into the hallway, tail puffed, eyes wide.
He froze
Yuu froze
Star blinked
Grim pointed dramatically " WHAT IS THAT?!" Star flinched, burying their face in Yuu's shoulder causing Yuu to shoot Grim a look, " Grim, inside voice."
“That IS my inside voice!” Grim hissed, though he immediately lowered it. “Why is there a tiny human in our house?!” Yuu shifted Star gently, rubbing their back. “This is Star. The Mirror summoned them.” Grim’s jaw dropped. “The Mirror summoned a kid? Why?! What are we supposed to do with it?!”
Star peeked out at the sound of Grim’s voice — just a sliver of one eye visible. Grim noticed and froze again, tail twitching.
“…It’s lookin’ at me.”
“They’re scared,” Yuu said softly. “Everyone was staring at them. They’ve had a long day.” Grim puffed up, trying to look intimidating. “Well, I’m not scared! I’m the Great Grim! I fear nothing!”
Star blinked at him.
Grim blinked back.
Star’s tiny hand lifted — hesitant, trembling — and they held out their stuffed toy toward him. Yuu’s breath caught. Grim stared at the toy like it was a bomb. “What… what’s it doing?” “They’re offering it to you,” Yuu whispered. “It’s a sign of trust.”
Grim swallowed hard, then reached out with one paw and tapped the toy gently. Star’s face softened — just a little — and they tucked the toy back to their chest. Yuu smiled. “See? They like you.” Grim huffed. “Well… of course they do. I am pretty great.” Star leaned slightly toward him, curious now instead of afraid.
Grim took a cautious step closer. “So… Star, huh? That’s your name?”Star didn’t speak, but they nodded once. Grim blinked. “Huh. Cute name.” Yuu raised an eyebrow. “You think so?” “I didn’t say I liked it!” Grim snapped, tail flicking. “I just said it’s cute! There’s a difference!”
Star giggled.
A tiny, breathy sound — but unmistakably a giggle. Yuu’s heart melted. Grim froze, ears shooting up. “Did it just laugh at me?!” Star giggled again, hiding their face behind their stuffed toy. Grim sputtered. “Hey! I’m not funny! I’m fearsome!” Yuu laughed softly. “I think they like you.”
Grim crossed his arms. “Well… fine. But I’m not babysitting. I’m not sharing my tuna. And I’m not cleaning up after it.” Star reached out and gently patted Grim’s head. Grim’s tail shot straight up. “HEY—!” But he didn’t pull away.
Not even a little.
Yuu exhaled, relief washing over them. “Welcome home, Star.” Star leaned into Yuu’s chest, eyes drifting shut, exhaustion finally catching up to them. Grim sighed dramatically. “Great. Now we’ve got a kid. What’s next? A whole daycare?” Yuu smiled. “One step at a time.”
Grim grumbled, but he walked beside them as Yuu carried Star deeper into the dorm — protective in the way only Grim could be.
And for the first time since arriving in this strange world, Star slept.

Morning sunlight filtered weakly through the stained-glass windows of the faculty conference hall — a room almost never used, and for good reason. It echoed. It smelled faintly of dust and old paperwork. And worst of all, it was where Crowley liked to hold “important” meetings.
Yuu stood near the back, Star perched sleepily on their hip, head tucked under Yuu’s chin. The staff filed in first — Crewel immaculate and irritated, Trein tired but composed, Vargas cracking his knuckles, and Sam humming cheerfully as his shadow slithered behind him.
Then came the housewardens and vice-housewardens, each with varying degrees of confusion and annoyance. Followed by extra strays wanting to know such as Ace, Deuce, and Floyd.
Crowley burst in with the energy of a man who had not slept but wanted everyone to think he had everything under control. “Thank you all for gathering on such short notice!” he announced, feathers puffing dramatically. “As you know, we have a situation.”
Crewel crossed his arms. “Dire, you dragged us here at dawn. This had better be more than your usual nonsense.” Crowley cleared his throat. “Well, you see, regarding our dear little Star—” Star peeked up at the sound of their name, blinking sleepily.
Crowley continued, “I attempted to contact the Child Guardian Bureau—” Trein’s eyebrow rose. “Attempted?” Crowley winced. “Yes, well, it seems their office is… ah… temporarily unavailable.”
Azul adjusted his glasses. “Unavailable how?” Crowley coughed. “Renovations.” Crewel’s eyes narrowed. “Renovations? Is that another lie of yours?”
Crowley ignored that. “The point is — they cannot take Star at this time. So! As the responsible, beloved, visionary headmage that I am. I have devised a brilliant solution!” Crowley spread his arms wide. “We shall create a temporary on-campus daycare!”
Trein sighed deeply. “Dire, this is not a simple undertaking. Children require structure, supervision, safety—” “And naps!” Vargas added proudly. Crowley nodded vigorously. “Exactly! And some of our staff already have young children, so this will be a wonderful resource for them as well!”
Trein blinked. “I… suppose that is true.” Crewel frowned. “But who, exactly, will be running this daycare?” Crowley beamed at that question. “Why, the students, of course!”
A collective groan rippled through the room. Riddle sputtered. “Students? They have classes! Responsibilities! Exams!” “Ah, yes, about that!” Crowley said brightly. “To encourage participation, I will be offering—” Yuu felt the dread before he even said it.
“—exam exemptions!”
The room exploded.
“ABSOLUTELY NOT!” Crewel barked. “You cannot bribe students with academic leniency!” “That undermines the entire educational system!” Trein snapped. Sam laughed. “Oh, this is gonna be good.”
Crowley held up his hands. “Now, now! Only small exemptions! A missed quiz here, a late assignment there—” “NO.” Crewel’s voice cracked like a whip. But the students… oh, the students were already whispering.
Ace’s eyes sparkled. “Wait, we can skip tests?”
Deuce looked torn. “We shouldn’t… but also… exams are hard…”
Floyd grinned. “I wanna play with the shrimpy baby! Gimme all the passes!”
Ruggie smirked. “Free grades for babysitting? Count me in.”
Even Idia perked up. “A… a daycare event? With buffs? And rewards?”
Crowley clapped. “Wonderful! Enthusiasm! Participation! Team spirit!” Crewel looked ready to strangle him while Sam whispered to his shadow, “This is gonna be chaos, huh?”
Yuu stepped forward, Star still clinging to them. “Crowley… you can’t just throw students at this. Star needs stability, not a rotating cast of teenagers bribed with exam passes.”
Crowley waved a hand. “Nonsense! Children love variety!”
Crewel glared. “We will discuss appropriate compensation later.” Trein nodded. “And proper supervision.” Vargas thumped his chest. “And safety protocols!”
Crowley brightened. “Excellent! A collaborative effort! So, it’s settled — the NRC Daycare Initiative begins today!”
Yuu only stayed silent, weighing the pros and cons. One pro they wouldn't need to worry about Star and their classes having conflict but...this school did have a big...ego problem and some students are unique. Yuu's eyes glance at Floyd before muttering under their breath,
The chosen space for the daycare turned out to be an unused annex near the botanical courtyard—dusty, overgrown, and apparently home to at least three cursed chairs. The housewardens were immediately assigned “cleanup teams,” which quickly turned into territorial disputes.
Star watched from Yuu’s arms, eyes wide.
“…Big room,” they said softly.
“You like it?” Yuu asked.
Star nodded. “For… play?”
“Yeah,” Yuu smiled faintly. “For play.”
Word spread fast. By the third day, the daycare space had turned into a mountain of donations:
Stuffed animals from students
Enchanted blocks that rearranged themselves into shapes
Storybooks from Trein’s children when they were young
Cushions from Scarabia
toys that Leona brought back that use to belong to Cheka
Even a polished carriage arrived at the edge of Night Raven College.
RSA had sent donations. Books. Educational toys. Healing charms designed for emotional regulation. Even hand-painted murals that could be hung on the daycare walls. And at the center of it all was a sealed envelope from the Headmage of RSA
“…Hmph,” Crowley said quietly. " How gracious of them."
The first official trial day came for a small group of staffs to bring their children for a trial run under strict supervision by Crewel, just for today. Just to see how the first group of volunteers do. The moment they entered, Star’s entire face lit up.
“Friends?” they asked immediately.
“Yeah,” Yuu said softly. “Friends for today.”
That was all it took. Star took their hand and led them straight to the play area like they had been waiting for this moment their whole life.
Even Grim got roped into pretending to be a “magical daycare guardian beast,” which he loudly insisted was beneath him while absolutely refusing to leave. Star was everywhere at once laughing, sharing toys, showing others how to stack blocks
