Credit to @rowdygirlsanctuary : We never ate our own cows. A couple years before I went vegan I questioned Tommy all the time about various aspects of the ranching business. Year after year it became increasingly more difficult for me to participate. One such conversation we had revolves around the fact that we never ate our own cows. It made no sense to me that we bought our “humanely raised beef” from the market when we had our own grass fed, “humanely raised” cows at the ranch. One day I pressured him until he answered me, and I was shocked by his response—“I can’t eat my own cows because I KNOW THEM”. That is really messed up when you think about it. So, I pushed my husband at the time to pick one of our cows to be slaughtered! In my pre-vegan mind, I was trying everything I could to rationalize the ranching business. I was trying to find a way to redeem myself of participating in this act of unnecessary violence towards Gods docile creatures. Tommy was infuriated at the time! He didn’t want to choose, but I forced him to do so by saying that “if I was going to be in this business with him that we were going to start slaughtering our own animals!” Tommy finally chose Lucky, Rowdy Girls first born. Lucky has a really bad leg because he hurt it when he escaped the red trailer back in February of 2014. Then he got lucky again because I went vegan in October of 2014. The more I pushed the envelope the crazier i became. Falling in love with the cows has been the greatest blessing in my life. Loving them has healed my broken soul. We are all broken by family traditions, culture, religion, etc. We come into this world a blank slate. We are taught normalized violence. It’s time to teach normalized “nonviolence”!!
