Truck by Truckwest Day 1: Trailer Food Tuesday & Rainey Street
This week has been über, exciting for Austin Food Trailers! Truck by Truckwest started on Tuesday October 29th, and we dove into the frenzy headfirst!
We started our crawl like everyone else — at the final Trailer Food Tuesday of the season. There were several TXTW trucks there and I was very impressed by their ability to handle both their usual Trailer Food Tuesday hoards and the TXTW Crawlers (thinking lots of Zombie imagery, in the spirit of the holiday)! They did what any sensible person would do in a potentially overwhelming situation, they addressed one customer at a time. If you had a TXTW badge you were rewarded with a treat or a discount and your food tended to come out faster, but you needed to wait in line just like everyone else. Totally reasonable and efficient! Also this way, each sample was freshly made, like it should be!

Kebabalicious
Falafel Shot w/tzatziki and a splash of their special hot sauce.
In a word - fantastic! I very much enjoyed the falafel, which was quite sizable, freshly made, and hot. The falafel has a great crunchy crust, but is still very moist on the inside. When you bite into the ball you will also notice that the mixture has a very nice heterogeneous texture, which I'm a big fan of!
Evil Wiener
La Revolucion - bacon wrapped hotdog w/mustard, ketchup, mayo, and pico de gayo
The bacon added an interesting crunch to the hotdog, and it's definitely a good way to go if you're craving a hot dog.
There were other TXTW trucks at TfT, which we have had before, and love very much: Chi'Lantro (Spicy Fries), Slab (Notorious P.I.G.), and Yeti (Naked Yeti). Unfortunately, as we had very limited real estate in our bellies, we decided to seek our fortunes elsewhere.
We returned to the bikes we rented from Barton Springs Bike Rental and made our way to Rainey Street!

My Granny's Kitchen
Mac n' Cheese Ball Few things say home cooking like mac n' cheese. My partner and I aren't huge fans of mac n' cheese balls, but My Granny's Kitchen has converted us! The mac n' cheese inside the ball is wonderfully seasoned, with little bits of perfectly cooked bell peppers mixed in. The mixture is then wrapped in a light batter, that is almost like a balloon, just firm enough containing the oooey gooey goodness within! Also, Van is super sweet! My partner came over to me sheepishly and said how sweet she was to him! I love the wonderful and warm people in the trailer community! They don't just make the food, they make the experience!
The Celia Jacobs Cheesecake Experience
NY Style Cheesecake Bite
If you don't know already, you will now! I'm from NY and know good cheesecake, and Celia's is exquisite! The outer texture of the bite is very much like a traditional NY style cheesecake, but when you go right past that initial layer, the cream inside is just a smidgen lighter and fluffier than it's richer cousin. I've always felt that the heaviness of a traditional cheesecake is a bit too much for a dessert, so this lighter variation is perfect! Also, it's slightly more spiced than is traditional, but that doesn't change the overall flavor pallet, it just gives the original one more depth. This delightful cake is then placed on a light and crispy crust, which is the ideal vessel for the confection. Celia's Cheesecake Bites create the perfect bite, which is what everyone should strive for. Make sure to make your way over to The Celia Jacobs Cheesecake Experience! It was an honor to be your first samplers of the crawl!

Slice of Detroit Style Pizza Again, from NY, total pizza snob. I've never had Detroit style, so I can't say how it compares, but I did enjoy the way the cheese fused with the dough. It created a very pleasant crunchy and cheesy texture.
Little Lucy's Mini Donuts
4 Mini Donuts w/caramel dipping sauce The donuts were freshly made to order, and it was really fun to watch her little machine do its thing! The donuts were hot and soft and the saltiness of the caramel sauce was a nice contrast to the sweetness of the donuts.
We hope everyone is enjoying their crawl and that we'll bump into some of you on the way! Also remember, you will get to vote for your favorite trailer at the end of the crawl! "Online voting takes place (via email link to badge holders or registered voters) once the taste-off is complete." Austin Food Trailers encourages you to take notes on the map, or anywhere you like, so you can recall all the wonderful foods from the beginning of the crawl when casting your vote!
