∇ -. old age/aging headcanon and ☆ - happy headcanon -- for ty!!

Old age/aging headcanon:

When Ty is older, he makes better progress towards recovering. He finishes his doctorate and qualifies as a therapist. I’m not sure what he practises but the scenario I have imagined most often is a one-to-one trauma specialist.

He also grows his hair back out, takes up painting classes, and hugs Jim again regularly.

Happy headcanon:

When bibi found out that Ty had taken up painting, she insisted that he paint something for her. The resulting red-and-gold explosion is framed proudly above her mantlepiece, and she had him sign it so that anyone who comes over knows exactly who it’s by, including his estranged family. Underneath the picture she also keeps a photo of him from Pride, which is a headcanon based on this picrew. It makes Ty feel loved every time he sees it.

aaaannnd commentary for prince 1 please!!

Now, there’s a great story for Prince 1.

Once upon a time, I was discussing roleswap AUs. Whumper Ellis, you’ve met. Whumpee Alistair, we will meet when I finish the piece with Clair. Whumpee Cat... is perhaps not going to be as non-canonical as I thought.

But the one, most cursed, most outlandish thought I had was...

What if there was a Whumper Jim?

The reactions to this concept were mostly screaming and disbelief. It was too cursed to ever come near canon and I wasn’t sure I wanted to write out the full hell angst it would entail.

So instead I set about thinking of a way I could put some of that heartbreak into canon. Just a sprinkling. A manageable amount. I already knew Ty would be left for dead by the Teacher, but survive, and something would happen after that to tip him over the edge into catatonic, but he would escape.

I found my answer in combining those ideas. Ty would be found by someone who looked like Jim, who sounded like Jim, who fussed and cared for him like Jim, who would betray the unearned trust that likeness granted him. A caretaker by all appearances, who cared deeply about helping people rest and recover when their lives and their personalities wouldn’t let them. Someone who was genuinely caring, and just took that caring a terrifying step too far.

I took my time with it, though few people trusted me, and am honoured that it wasn’t until Prince 4 that I received a message from @that-one-thespian yelling at me for canonising Whumper Jim.

And now you know his cursed secret.

DVD commentary for your very first whump piece posted here/the start of your whump blog?

Ooh, now that’s an interesting one! That was... Well, it was untitled at the time, but in the masterpost I named it Introduction.

The actual intro to the piece makes me cringe a tiny bit now.

Back then, these characters were still in development. I hadn’t decided Ty’s specific family situation. I didn’t know that Jim was fat. I hadn’t really hashed out exactly how he was conditioned and I wasn’t sure whether he had scars. Jim’s dialogue is not very Jim.

You can see some bits in this that I later decided fit Ellis better. ‘The rules of the clean room’ is one such thing. Ty was never given concrete guidelines, and was instead trained to adapt to whatever he was told to do. Early references in other pieces to Ty being ‘good’ is something I cut out after it became so integral to Ellis.

You can see details I’ve never gone back to. Ty being especially sensitive about his feet? I don’t know either. Didn’t really strike me as a potent detail and I let it die. After the second piece blew up, hands became much more important as a motif.

There’s even something I retconned - Ty no longer has or wears a wedding ring.

But at its core, it’s the most classic Ty drabble I can imagine. It gives you a glimpse of his trauma through his relapse. The description of his space, such an important vector for Ty, is a demonstration of his mental state. His heart-aching relationship with Jim, untouched but so cared for, is fully formed.

So really, I got the important things right.

DVD commentary: the one where ty and julian rebel in little ways to help their batch of trainees? I think it's the one with some really great sun/light metaphors

!!!! I’m always stoked to speak to someone who thinks about Julian. He’s one of my side characters that I just adore but I do not give enough attention.

Unfortunately your description links to pretty much all of his drabbles because you hit upon the two key conceits I have with Julian pieces: the importance of small rebellions, and the way he collaborates with Ty. The ‘sun to his moon’ phrase actually comes from the Biohazard ask about Ty, but it is the idea behind their dynamic.

Class Clown is, in my opinion, the quintessential Julian piece. It highlights how different he is to the other captives, and how much they love him for it. It shows him in his lovely happy-go-lucky self, but also being very caring. Ty does more of the reaching out and forging connections with the other captives, but Julian is involved. Through his finger-spelt messages across the room, he keeps up with what’s going on.

And when trouble comes sweeping over the group, Julian is brave. He steps into the firing line. He takes the spotlight and performs the rebellious trainee. Until the very last second, he’s joking, making sure he can squeeze out a few more seconds of smiles before he gets beaten down again.

And again.

And again.

And it works. Boy does it work. Dead hairs and grit came away under the cloth and he felt a pang of almost-deadened revulsion. This is Ty we’re talking about, narrating this, feeling next to nothing at the dirt under his hands. Julian is the only reason Ty survived as long as he did in training. They supported each other.

But then, one day, the sun went behind a cloud, and it never came back out.

But since meeting Jim, and finding out how happy he could make me - which he does, as much as he can, every day, with probably too much dedication - well, um. I don’t... Regret what they did. It was worth it. For Jim, it was worth it.”

On this day, please tell me something your whumpees like about themselves, for I am in the mood for some soft!

Ty likes his hair! It's starting to grow back and he takes good care of it and looks forward to the day he can go back to his old haircut, long and fluffy on top. He also likes the way he is still perceptive and can still read Jim like a book even after over a year apart.

Ellis, outside of fucky self-esteem things, likes his imagination. It helps him on the slow days of his captivity and lets him dream of things that are less boring than being locked in a big house all day every day. He can stare at the clouds and make pictures, and from those pictures make stories, and from those stories write films in his head, and he loves to do it.
