Devotional for October 2

I create the light and make the darkness.        I send good times and bad times.        I, the LORD, am the one who does these things. - Isaiah 45:7

Insight

God is ruler over light and darkness, over prosperity and disaster. Our lives are sprinkled with both types of experiences, and both are needed for us to grow spiritually.

Challenge

When good times come, thank God and use your prosperity for him. When bad times come, don't resent them, but ask what you can learn from this refining experience to make you a better servant of God.

Este é um livrinho singelo. São apenas 39 páginas, reunindo citações de temática diversificada da lavra daqueles que chamamos de Reformadores, tais como Lutero, Calvino e Zwinglio, e também dos assim chamados Pré-Reformadores, como Savonarola, Huss e Wycliffe, cujo esforço e eventual martírio foram precursores da Reforma maior que havia de vir.      Neste ano comemoramos nada menos que quinhentos anos de Reforma Protestante. Assim, redondos, perfeitos. Por ocasião de tal efeméride, devemos ter por mote capital o lema proposto pelo reformador holandês Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676): “Ecclesia Reformata et Semper Reformanda Est” (“A Igreja é reformada e está sempre se reformando”). A frase significa que a obra da Reforma não está concluída, mas persevera ou deve perseverar em seu avanço em direção à verdade e à vivência de um cristianismo a cada dia mais bíblico (há quem utilize o termo apostólico, perfeitamente válido) e equilibrado.      Se a Reforma representou um retorno ou reaproximação à verdade, tal verdade deve ser comunicada com urgência e ímpeto; ímpeto maior do que o daqueles que comunicam o engano, cada vez maior, em cada vez mais variadas formas. Cremos que a Reforma é um movimento engendrado em Deus, peça de perfeito encaixe dentro de seu Kairós, seu tempo; movimento que aponta para conserto dos agentes e engajamento na ação, ou seja, reerguimento da Igreja e/para o cumprimento da Grande Comissão. Assim, a Reforma é um prenúncio da volta do Rei, e um movimento fundamental de seu glorioso retorno.      No mais, aqui estão: os pais reformadores, em suas próprias palavras.

Devotional for May 19

And some of the wise will fall victim to persecution. In this way, they will be refined and cleansed and made pure until the time of the end, for the appointed time is still to come. - Daniel 11:35

Insight

God's messenger described a time of trial when even wise believers may stumble. This could mean (1) falling into sin, (2) being fearful and losing faith, (3) mistakenly following wrong teaching, or (4) experiencing severe suffering and martyrdom.

Challenge

If we persevere in our faith, any such experience will only refine us and make us stronger. Are you facing trials? Recognize them as opportunities to strengthen your faith. If we remain steadfast in these experiences, we will be stronger in our faith and closer to God.

Insight

A healthy Christian community attracts people to Christ. The Jerusalem church's zeal for worship and brotherly love was contagious. A healthy, loving church will grow in numbers.

Challenge

What are you doing to make your church the kind of place that will attract others to Christ?
