What of the Filthy Rich?

Tracing an emergent flash of class consciousness and its defeat.

An overview

1526: Moral Sin. Defined as "dishonorable gain" in Tyndale's Bible. The "filth" referred to the shameful or disgraceful methods used to obtain profit.

1909: Unethical Accumulation. Defined as wealth gained through systemic corruption. The "filth" described the monopolies and bribery used by Gilded Age industrialists to build empires.

1929: Social Stigma. Defined as "class vulgarity" during the Great Depression. Used by "Old Money" to sneer at the perceived lack of breeding and crass spending habits of the nouveaux riches.

Us, Now: Virtue. Hard-Earned Reward, discipline, talent. A measure of positive systemic impact.

Bitterly pejorative and systemic. About the way the money was made, but particularly the obscene contrast of having it while the nation suffered. (Exploitation of those who had to sell their homes at unreasonably low prices in order to eat during the economic crash.)

Filthy lucre seems an origin for filthy rich as focus on gains (lucre) shifts to gainful, as well as those in possession of gains (lucrative).

Insight

God is ruler over light and darkness, over prosperity and disaster. Our lives are sprinkled with both types of experiences, and both are needed for us to grow spiritually.

Challenge

When good times come, thank God and use your prosperity for him. When bad times come, don't resent them, but ask what you can learn from this refining experience to make you a better servant of God.

Este é um livrinho singelo. São apenas 39 páginas, reunindo citações de temática diversificada da lavra daqueles que chamamos de Reformadores, tais como Lutero, Calvino e Zwinglio, e também dos assim chamados Pré-Reformadores, como Savonarola, Huss e Wycliffe, cujo esforço e eventual martírio foram precursores da Reforma maior que havia de vir.      Neste ano comemoramos nada menos que quinhentos anos de Reforma Protestante. Assim, redondos, perfeitos. Por ocasião de tal efeméride, devemos ter por mote capital o lema proposto pelo reformador holandês Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676): “Ecclesia Reformata et Semper Reformanda Est” (“A Igreja é reformada e está sempre se reformando”). A frase significa que a obra da Reforma não está concluída, mas persevera ou deve perseverar em seu avanço em direção à verdade e à vivência de um cristianismo a cada dia mais bíblico (há quem utilize o termo apostólico, perfeitamente válido) e equilibrado.      Se a Reforma representou um retorno ou reaproximação à verdade, tal verdade deve ser comunicada com urgência e ímpeto; ímpeto maior do que o daqueles que comunicam o engano, cada vez maior, em cada vez mais variadas formas. Cremos que a Reforma é um movimento engendrado em Deus, peça de perfeito encaixe dentro de seu Kairós, seu tempo; movimento que aponta para conserto dos agentes e engajamento na ação, ou seja, reerguimento da Igreja e/para o cumprimento da Grande Comissão. Assim, a Reforma é um prenúncio da volta do Rei, e um movimento fundamental de seu glorioso retorno.      No mais, aqui estão: os pais reformadores, em suas próprias palavras.
