Tythia and Perry
Part two of this post.
So, Perry came across in this season as a bit ... selfish. The whole season started because she tried to cast a spell to keep LaF from leaving. And watch her face and Carmilla’s face during the conversation between her and Tythia.
Perry was going to say yes to Tythia. She wanted to accept her offer. And you can see that Carmilla thought she was going to. Earlier she had described the “graphic” images in her mythology textbook as “lovely” (including fairies drinking out of human skulls!). There’s clearly a very dark side to Lola Perry.
Tythia saw Mel and Carmilla’s fondest wishes. She also saw Perry’s fondest wishes. Her wish was not just to be “special”, but also a desire for power. A desire to have control over her situation.
The only reason she said no was when she realized what it would mean for LaF. Which clearly surprised Carmilla.
I think a large part of why Perry turned away from magic after that was not just the fear of fairies. It was that she was terrified by what she saw of herself.
This brings season 2 into a whole new light. Perry must’ve felt abandoned by LaF. These feelings had probably started in season 1. Her discomfort with LaF’s insistence on not being called Susan probably felt like she was losing her friend. LaF’s growing interest in the supernatural probably felt the same way, compounded by the feeling that she could not follow her friend in that interest. Then when LaF began to become interested in JP, it would’ve felt like she’d been tossed aside for him.
Then LaF frankensteined JP into Will’s body. What a punch in the gut that must’ve been for Perry. In multiple ways. Not only was JP now corporeal, but the body was of a vampire she’d staked, a traumatic event for her. And LaF had done that without even giving her a heads-up! In fact, pretty much everyone was ignoring her.
But, of course, not everyone. Not Lilita Morgan.
Lilita Morgan, powerful ancient supernatural entity, had chosen her, Lola Perry. We can’t know exactly why it was Perry that Lilita had chosen. From what she said at the end of 2x36, it sounded like she wouldn’t’ve been her first choice. But she was, after all, directly addressing an audience. And she’s pretty much a perfect example of an unreliable narrator.
Lilita Morgan saw those tapes. She knew who Perry was. She knew what potential Perry had. She knew that Perry was truly powerful. And she knew what Perry’s fondest hidden wish was.
I suspect she spoke to Perry when she first began possessing her. Maybe she even appeared to her. When JP first showed up, she assumed he was a hallucination. This supports the idea that she was “hallucinating” already.
And what kind of things would Lilita Morgan have said to Perry? Perhaps things like “Look at how LaFontaine is treating you, after all you sacrificed for them! You gave up everything for them and this is how they repay you! They toss you aside like you’re nothing” “Look at how your friends treat you. They ignore your pain. They treat you like their maid. They think you’re nothing. They think you’re just sweet harmless Perry. But I know better. You’re not average, you’re amazing. You’re powerful. I can show you how to use your power”
What if the reason the Dean was able to slowly take over Perry more and more was because Perry let her? Possession is probably a lot easier with the host’s consent.
What if this is why the Dean chose her? Anyone else would’ve fought her, but Perry she could manipulate.
What if Perry is conscious in there, but she’s not scared? Not trying to fight the Dean? She’s loving every moment. Lilita Morgan gave her a second chance to be special.
The Wonderful Fairy of Silas
So, I was thinking more about the Tythia thing, the arguments about Laura being fairy magic and fate and all that, and I thought of something. Maybe no one was created by fairy magic, or changed by fairy magic, or fated to meet, but rather, something different.
In episode 9, Carmilla made a Wizard of Oz reference in regards to Mel, “look who asked the Wizard for a backbone”. Given the frequent use of literary references as foreshadowing, there may be some significance to this. In the Wizard of Oz, the characters sought the Wizard to grant wishes. Of course, the Wizard did not actually grant anyone’s wishes. The Cowardly Lion wanted courage, and the Wizard showed him that he had it all along. Likewise the Tinman’s heart and the Scarecrow’s brain.
What if Tythia did the same thing? She didn’t change Mel. She just gave Mel needed confidence. Mel had that motivation, leadership skills, even the courage, all along, it was just buried under crippling self-doubt. Tythia boosted her confidence with a fake prophecy/wish-granting, so that she could fulfill her heart’s desire.
With Carmilla, her “wish-granting” was vague on details. She said nothing about time or place, only “you shall meet”. When? The next day? The next year? The next century? She described a type, a type that she knew Carmilla would need. Even though Carmilla acted like she thought it was nonsense, perhaps she really did take it to heart, believing that she would meet someone, so that when she met Laura, she was open to her. Laura herself, however, is not directly relevant. There may be others who would have suited her just as well. Indeed, the wish does not actually say anything about romance. “Match” can apply just as well to a rival as to a partner, and challenge can be interpreted many ways. So her wish-granting/prophecy could’ve been fulfilled in many ways.
And Perry ... there’s a lot to say about Perry in that scene, which deserves its own post. (EDIT: Perry’s post here)
I just thought of something. Tythia’s spell altered Mel’s personality to an extent ( It seems more like changing the balance of various traits. Greatly reducing or outright eliminating things like Mel’s anxiety while amping up her desire to be important and impress her family) to make her Summer material, and the leader she always wanted to be.
What if it did the same to Laura? We only get a very brief glimpse of high school!Laura, so we can’t really get a good idea of her personality back then. But, if Tythia’s magic can change one person, why not another? So, what if Laura’s personality was subtly changed to be a better match for Carmilla?
So if the Dean is in fact Morrigan (as in Irish folklore goddes Morrigan, not Dragon Age Morrigan) then it could fit that there is this rivalry going on between her and Tythia (btw I googled it, not a real mythological figure). This is of course based on my headcanon that the Dean is Morrigan (Irish goddes Morrigan, not weird anime vampire Morrigan). Or maybe I’m reading to much into something on the basis of name similarities.
