Nothing to see here VS. The Execution of Carmilla Karnstien
The Wonderful Fairy of Silas
So, I was thinking more about the Tythia thing, the arguments about Laura being fairy magic and fate and all that, and I thought of something. Maybe no one was created by fairy magic, or changed by fairy magic, or fated to meet, but rather, something different.
In episode 9, Carmilla made a Wizard of Oz reference in regards to Mel, “look who asked the Wizard for a backbone”. Given the frequent use of literary references as foreshadowing, there may be some significance to this. In the Wizard of Oz, the characters sought the Wizard to grant wishes. Of course, the Wizard did not actually grant anyone’s wishes. The Cowardly Lion wanted courage, and the Wizard showed him that he had it all along. Likewise the Tinman’s heart and the Scarecrow’s brain.
What if Tythia did the same thing? She didn’t change Mel. She just gave Mel needed confidence. Mel had that motivation, leadership skills, even the courage, all along, it was just buried under crippling self-doubt. Tythia boosted her confidence with a fake prophecy/wish-granting, so that she could fulfill her heart’s desire.
With Carmilla, her “wish-granting” was vague on details. She said nothing about time or place, only “you shall meet”. When? The next day? The next year? The next century? She described a type, a type that she knew Carmilla would need. Even though Carmilla acted like she thought it was nonsense, perhaps she really did take it to heart, believing that she would meet someone, so that when she met Laura, she was open to her. Laura herself, however, is not directly relevant. There may be others who would have suited her just as well. Indeed, the wish does not actually say anything about romance. “Match” can apply just as well to a rival as to a partner, and challenge can be interpreted many ways. So her wish-granting/prophecy could’ve been fulfilled in many ways.
And Perry ... there’s a lot to say about Perry in that scene, which deserves its own post. (EDIT: Perry’s post here)
I just thought of something. Tythia’s spell altered Mel’s personality to an extent ( It seems more like changing the balance of various traits. Greatly reducing or outright eliminating things like Mel’s anxiety while amping up her desire to be important and impress her family) to make her Summer material, and the leader she always wanted to be.
What if it did the same to Laura? We only get a very brief glimpse of high school!Laura, so we can’t really get a good idea of her personality back then. But, if Tythia’s magic can change one person, why not another? So, what if Laura’s personality was subtly changed to be a better match for Carmilla?
Error Code 18
The “ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES” error code, more commonly known as the Windows System Error Code 18 displays the error message “There are no more files” and error value 0x12. To fix this problem the user must update the affected hardware device, using the command “Update Driver” found in the Device Manager application.
