Know Your Major: Comparative Literature
Comparative Literature is an interdisciplinary major that studies literature across various languages and cultures. Students take language and literature courses in order to develop skills in comparing different literary traditions. Every student chooses a primary literary field as well as a secondary field, which may be a national literature, literary theory, or other discipline.
Know Your Major: Astronomy and Astrophysics
Astounded by the stars and galaxies in our Universe? Curious about the nature of black holes? If so, check out our new Astrophysics major or Astronomy and Astrophysics minor! Through these programs of study, you get to learn about cosmological physics, the Milky Way, the history of the Big Bang model, and more. The program also provides the opportunity for students to learn about current astrophysics research instruments and then participate in research with a faculty member. Students minoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics can even join the Astronomy study abroad program in Paris to fulfill three of their course requirements!
Why UChicago: Patrick Y.
“One of my classmates asked our professor on one of the last days of class, ‘Why did you choose to study math?’ My professor started drawing these different 'worlds' of math on the chalkboard, like linear algebra and algebraic topology, and drew connections between them—lighting up as he described studying math as being a traveler of worlds. ‘It's incredible; It's just beautiful.’ I'm pretty sure half the class was tearing up by the time he finished talking. It was really the first time one of my instructors had shown so explicitly genuine passion for what they were doing, and that was admittedly quite, well, 'beautiful,' especially when that came from the same person who kept telling us to live a little whilst we were undergrads, to ‘eat ice cream and watch Westworld.’”
