Scenic Furniture

We were all assigned a different plinth to paint. To paint it, I decided to use two different shades of grey so they would be very similar to the arch, but slightly lighter colours so that it was still its own object. I mixed up some white and black paint (was mostly black) in the right proportions. I stippled it on, alternating every so often, to create a tonal patched effect. This helped them blend a little bit, whilst also having patches of each colour. This stippling effect also helped to make the boundaries between the patches rough and less uniform. This gave it a more organic feel and makes it feel like certain areas of the rock had worn more than others.

Apply techniques and processes to accurately interpret the designer’s intentions for set furniture. During the show the actors used boxes as seats at various points in the show with different scenes behind. The boxes had to be decorated in such a way that it would fit into every scene. As a group with the directorial team in agreement we decided to paint the boxes the same as the floor but with added detail on one side. Matching the floor was hard as the floor had already been completed by this point. Again like the stage we based them in yellow emulsion then worked the other colours in using the red brown as the prime colour. We did not get a perfect match but we got as close as we could by using the same colours and amount of glaze and water. On the detailed side we choose a design that was on already on the set located at the front of the cat walk which was a rose. We marked the rose out with chalk by using the same image when the original rose was drawn. We then black lined the edges of the rose and added detail to match the rose on the front of the stage. This was done by keeping to the colour pallet of yellow and red. The technique of black lining is to create a bold image but as they was not at the front of the stage they did not have to be perfect. The best way to do this was to turn the brush on its side. The other sections of colour had to be done carefully and with different size brushes. This meant that the boxes could blend into the floor and not attract the audience attention or they could be placed with the rose facing the audience to attract their attention depending on what scene it was and what emotions would be running through the scene. During the days leading up to the show I had to help make and paint pieces of furniture for the set as well as props. Here are pictures of the props and furniture that I painted and made;

Set design day 40

Today I started by painting the base of the truck ultra marine blue as well as four wooden knobs. I mixed the paint at about 3:1 and then brushed it on with long strokes to keep it even, the metalwork  was already de-greased, so after two coats of ultramarine blue it was nicely covered and matched the wood. I then helped Tom paint the wheels brown.

After this I drilled holes through the knobs and stuck through them, I painted the bolt blue too then put them into the metal uprights on the truck. These are used whenever the fabric is not on the trucks to cover the small metal bars sticking up in each corner.

I also cut out over 250 bottle labels, for the beer bottles.

Set design day 35

Today we were called in at three o’clock to make a list of what we needed to do, the actors left the space at six and we went in.

Me and Luke started off by dry-brushing the detail of the wood grain onto the pier. After that I based the top and front edge of one of the side platforms with white emulsion l, then helped finish the underneath, we are basing it all white then we are going to spray on the colour.

I also de-greased the ramp so that it could be primed and help paint the ramps woodwork with emulsion. The techniques we used were stippling and forced blending.
