Scenic Painting: Why Preparation is important.

When it comes to scenic painting, preparation is key as there is a number of things that the painter has do ensure that they do before they begin. Set Designer: Firstly they should speak with the set designer and review the model of the set in which they've created. They should ask them what kind of colours do they want, dark, light, etc, what kinda of texture should each piece be, do they want it to be made of wood, stone etc, and how do the colours work with one another, whether the want them to blend together with one another, whether the want blocked colour or some kinda of gradient to each part of the piece. They need to ensure the ask all of these things in order to ensure that the set matches their concept. Director: Secondly, they need to speak with the director, the colours of the set should have already been approved by the director however they would've only seen a small model of the set, it is vital that they regularly check progress of the painting progress so they can actually see what the set would look like and to make sure it fits their needs. This vital as it being the directors show, they need to ensure that the directors are happy to use what they've been given and to ensure it is fit for showing. Lighting and costume designers: Another vital person to speak to is both the costume and lighting designers. It is vital to speak to the costume designer as they need to ensure that the colour scheme of the set, matches the colour scheme of the costumes, it wouldn't look right for the set to look black and for the costumes to be white, so this is how to avoid that. Similarly it is crucial to speak with the lighting designer, this is because they would have to advise the designer about what colour gel to use in the lights, if a set is a certain colour, and the light that it's shun on it is of the opposite colour in the spectrum the colour would turn to black and prevent any colour from being seen at all, this is why we speak to the lighting designer, to ensure that colours with would like to stand out do, and if we want other colours to appear black at times, we can.

Preparation for Scenic Painting.

Before we could begin painting the set, it was vital that we learnt all of the key techniques and how to layer our painting. Dry Brushing: The first technique we learnt was dry brushing, this is where the tip of the paintbrush on the surface ,intended to be dry brushed, and is gently run across without any pressure being placed upon it. This is used to remove the smooth appearance that painting usually creates in order to create a scratched texture such as woodgrain. Stippling: Next we learn Stippling, this is where the paintbrush is dabbed onto the surface usually with some force repeatedly until the surface if covered. This technique gives the surface a bumpy texture to create a rock like look. Furthermore, this technique can be used to blend multiple colours, simply by switching colours between dabs can help blend to colours together to create a more natural look. Splattering: The next technique we learnt was splattering, this is where the paintbrush is simply knocked against the painters hand to make the paint randomly splatter dots all across the surface. This technique is sometimes used to add pattern to a surface but often to make something look slightly dirty, by splattering a brown paint across something can create the illusion that it is covered in dirt. Sponging: Sponging is exactly the same as stippling, however instead of using a paintbrush, the painter uses a sponge. This technique is used to create some variation in colour, in some places where the sponge is dabbed, the colour will appear lighter than before and will blend with the colour around it to give the concluded look and more natural blend. Ragging On, Ragging Off & Rag Roll: Similar the dry brushing, tagging is also used to give a similar texture to a given surface, to rag on, the painter dips a piece of cloth into their paint and lightly drags it across the surface, to rag off, the painter uses a clean rag to wipe off some paint put previously, however leaving some behind to give the scratched and rusted texture to the surface. Rag rolling is where the rag is rolled across the surface opposed to dragging it. Graining: The last painting technique we were taught was graining, for this technique we required a special tool called a grainer, this once dipped in paint can be slid across a surface, changing angles whilst one does it, to create the shape of wood grain and knots on top of a given surface.

when we built the grass and the bench we used techniques such as black lining to make it stand out more, colour coding which was also to do with the concept. for the bench as well we also had to reinforce it so it wouldn't break when it had people stand and jumping on it. we also had to paint it with roscos very carefully because if we got paint of the black lining we had to do it again. a cirtain amount of carpentry had to be used as well to make the grass from scratch.

unit 73- crit 2

on the 'ubu plays' we used multiple washes of watered down stains on all the beams and struts that where meant to be part of an old barn to get the desired effect of weathered old wood. we also used a lot of black lining of the 'insect play' to make things stand out and give it detail. and as well we splattered paint on our crash mats of the 'ubu plays' to break it up and make it blend into the set more.

unit 73- crit 1

i did my scenic painting when i designed, marked out, built and painted my two pieces of grass set. it was made out of 4 pieces of 8 by 4 sheets of MDF. first i marked out all my grass, once i had done that i cut them out using a jig saw. once that was finished i reinforced it using long rods of 2 by 2, after that i hinged them together using split hinges so they would stand up right, we then braced them using 2 by 2 rods and split hinges. after that was finished them we needed to paint them brown because that was the concept, once we had done a couple of coats of it and it had dried it was ready to black line, after a few attempts it was quite clear i wasn't very good at black lining but after i was made to persist i was finished and ready to be put in.
