JULY 11, 2O14
Members of the eboard and Recruitment Committee made the trip to the University of Florida in order to attend UFFSA's Go Fest 2014: Guilty Pleasure. The annual summer retreat welcomes eboards from all local Filipino Student Associations throughout Florida and as far as Georgia. Other universities in attendance included Florida State, Central Florida, North Florida, Florida International, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State. Attendees enjoyed three days full of leadership training, dance and sports, as well as networking events.
After attending the interclub social Friday night, guests congregated bright and early at the Lake Wauburg clubhouse for the training conference. All schools delivered presentations created to help eboards learn about everything from professionalism at events, to efficient tabling techniques. USFAFS led the gathering through a sample general board meeting, using one of our most popular themes from the past year, Filipino Stereotypes, which proved to be just as relevant with those in attendance at Go Fest.
Between presentations by the eboards, attendees also participated in workshops designed to encourage interclub networking--such as hypothetically planning a trip on a budget, and taking a quiz to discover what kind of a leader they were and learn how to make the most of their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses. Eboards were divided into groups according to position (Presidents, Secretaries, Multimedia, etc) for the majority of the workshops, which allowed members to share and learn techniques specific to their job which were unique to other schools. The conference definitely assisted attendees develop their network of FSA contacts, but even better friendships between clubs.
Following the conference, guests swapped out their professionalism for their dancing shoes as everyone headed over to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. For the next event and a change of pace, UFFSA and Weekend Crew organized a dance workshop featuring guest choreographers from the different schools in attendance. Even after learning three pieces, FSA members were still ready for even more dancing. The official Go Fest Club Party also took place on Saturday, hosted by UFFSA and Weekend Crew at Simon's Night Club--see UFFSA's Go Fest album for photos!
To end Go Fest on Sunday, attendees gathered at Campus Lodge to enjoy the Dodgeball Tournament in the morning, then the Pool Party hosted by UFFSA and Kappa Phi Lambda--see UFFSA's Go Fest album for photos!
The packed weekend provided eboards the opportunity to build their networks and learn techniques which will enable them to better serve their orgs. While Go Fest definitely illustrates how the different chapters operate, it also brings us together and reminds members that despite whatever university colors we wear, we are all a part of one large fam under the Filipino Student Association.
Special thanks to our wonderful hosts for the weekend: Merikris, Kris, Dana.
Shoutout to all the new friends we made from the FSAs in attendance!
Huge thank-you to the UFFSA eboard for organizing such an educational and enjoyable event.

6.12.1898 Araw ng Kalayaan – Day of Freedom
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” -Marcus Garvey
Within Filipino culture lies a history of rich tradition through the efforts of our ancestors. June 12th signifies a pivotal moment in the historical journey of generations past. Philippine Independence Day, known in Tagalog as Araw Ng Kalayaan or Day of Freedom is often overlooked. Afters hundreds of years under Spanish rule, Emilio Aguinaldo led a movement of independence from Spanish colonial rule on June 12th 1898. Festivals are celebrated annually in commemoration of this historical day around the world, highlighting the rich Filipino culture. Celebrate with us the Independence of the Philippines; spread awareness of this milestone in Filipino history by sharing this picture with your pamilya and friends.
Reviving Soul, Essence and Spirit. UFFSA Barrio 2013
At 18 months, infants start to understand their physical self. By looking in front of a mirror, they are able to tell that the image reflected is them. What’s cross-culturally interesting --and not pointed out in my psychology textbook-- is that in developing countries, some adolescents don’t even see their own faces in a mirror because they don’t have access to one. It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but my elder sister told me from her visit to a Gawad Kalinga site how meaningful a small gift of a handheld-sized mirror was to a little girl. Even some adults in developing areas have had no clue what they looked like. Where I’m getting at is the difference in culture into identifying self. Where developed countries can quickly learn a sense of identity from the superficial self, developing countries really only identify themselves in not the way they look, but more so what they are like as people. Growing up in such a privileged lifestyle, it is more difficult to be more in touch with the things that can define us in a non-materialistic way. To some elementary school kids now, you take away their cell phone to them its like taking away who they are. YOU’RE 6. WHY DO YOU NEED YOUR IPHONE? Lol, but really.. it’s weird to think that having everything in front of you makes life more complicated than having nothing in front of you. It wasn’t until college, until joining FSA and being involved in other organizations, that I have found my identity of being an Asian American woman and becoming comfortable in who I am. There’s more to life than the materialistic blessings. As my mom once told me: money can’t buy you happiness, but it can provide you with luxuries. As we all aim for so many different things in life, we forget the intangible treasures that truly matter the most: family, friends, happiness, culture and tradition. Barrio weekend is a time we celebrate these things together. As UF FSA, our main focus this year is just that-- reviving soul, essence and spirit. And as Mother Teresa taught more concisely “live simply so that others may simply live” With that said, as an organization we extend our welcome to you to celebrate with us on the weekend of February 23rd. Become cultured at to Barrio Fiesta, support Leukemia research benefit raffle and participate in GK sports day. This weekend will definitely be one that you won’t regret investing your time in. -- For more info on the Barrio Fiesta Weekend 2013: Reviving Soul, Essence and Spirit: http://www.facebook.com/events/128726007300777/?group_id=0
