I got bored. So I edited Dante's red Limbus Manager coat into a white lab coat and then I edited them onto the Keter background.
Just because I could.

I think one of the difficult balances to strike with Dean when writing him is where to situate his immaturity. because he is immature in a lot of ways! and I don’t mean that in a pejorative sense either - he’s emotionally and socially stunted because of his upbringing, and that causes a lot of problems for him. but I often find that people generalise that immaturity way too much, and have him respond to situations as if he’s never like, been to a grocery store or had a frank conversation about sex or paid a bill. I think part of that is down to the age of the writer, especially with older fics where it’s very clear it was written by a teenager (especially especially when the fic is dealing with sexuality or him coming out), but it’s also that the show itself is inconsistent about his characterisation, so there’s a series of judgement calls you have to make when adapting the source material to fic. Like, one episode will establish he’s been doing his family’s laundry since he was 10 and then in the next episode he’ll be like “I have never seen a microwave in my life”. Shit like that is annoying!
In general I think that Dean has had a lot of life experience, good and bad, and he doesn’t have a lot of experience talking about it with other people. I think he’s comfortable with (or at least, resigned to) a lot of unpleasant experiences and societal monotony, but he flounders when someone acknowledges his trauma or wants to talk to him about a serious emotional topic. I think he’s also resourceful and mature enough to figure out a complicated technical or procedural task even if he’s never specifically done it before, but he’s far less able to do that when it comes to intimacy or helping a friend through some emotionally upsetting event. And I think he’s aware of that too! Dean really likes to be helpful, and when he doesn’t know how to respond to someone or help them solve a problem, that upsets/angers/saddens him and makes him feel insecure and shitty about himself. So a lot of the time he’ll say something stupid or ill-considered during an emotional conversation because he’s trying to bullshit his way to personal enlightenment in real time, which doesn’t tend to work very well for him.
So anyway there isn’t a point to this post really, I’m just thinking out loud. Generally the characterisations of Dean that ring truest to me are when he’s rock solid on providing material, technical, and procedural support to someone, and shaky when providing emotional, social, and trauma support to someone.
