gift granted, you’ve gone rancid
oh god there's been annoying discourse on twitter on "should fanfiction be considered reading" and i feel like we have this conversation every other year but whatever.
i want to bring to the table something my high school english teacher said to me where on the first week of the school year he went over the difference between books and literature where with books you're going to get your more "trashy" stuff that was created for the sake of telling a story, entertaining, etc. and literature includes works that were created with the intent of provoking thought and questions during and after reading. one is telling a story and the other tells a message.
and here's the beautiful thing about that -- one, language as a whole is flexible, constantly evolving, and can fluctuate in interpretation. semantics and all that. so to one person a work might be considered a book and to another it may be literature. it may be generally called something based on general consensus which is how you get "the classics", but it also is free to be perceived by the reader in any which way. and TWO, this definition of literature is not limited by genre or medium. any work from any genre or any medium can be considered literature and that means "a romance" told through a "web novel" medium can be literature. that's a fancy way of saying that fanfiction can be literature if your heart feels like it.
it's not that important and normally i wouldnt weigh in on topics i don't care about but i saw someone say, "reading actual literature is better for your brain than fanfic" and i was like man what even IS actual literature bro because ive taken literature classes that include more than just written and published works
I keep creating comics that I’ll never finish
