Arum maculatum (Lords and Ladies, or Cuckoo Pint) #oneadayplant Today’s one a day plant is for @gardenswithdogs who enjoys a good Arum and for Dudo who spotted some of these and asked me previously. A beautiful and exotic looking British native plant. Lovely big juicy foliage and flowers that are both elegant and dramatic. Inspiration for Triffids?! This colony were particularly tall flowered and the leaves were very large. Could be site and soil, could be seed variation. Either way, I’m impressed. Probably should be more commonly planted in gardens rather than simply the preserve of the woodland verge. A much ignored (unless you are a links golfer) native shrub that consistently performs. Ulex europaeus (Common Gorse or Furze). #oneadayplant I am not a huge fan of orangey-yellow flowers and in most plants this colour would really put me off. I love gorse though as an absolutely amazing doer. Tough as nails and twice and prickly. It’s needle-like leaves are not to be messed with. Despite that though, it does clip surprisingly well and although it will never make a neat hedge, it can be shaped. Flowering runs from around March through to October, but is focused on spring and can occur at any time of the year. Flowers have a pleasing Coconut scent. Great as a coastal barrier, but will grow anywhere with enough light and reasonable drainage. Makes amazing gnarled shapes in time, with every plant becoming a bonsai in its own right. Because it grows so well, it has become an invasive plant in warmer countries where it has been introduced.
