Today’s #oneadayplant is about giving it your beat go rather than doing as well as you can. Some environments allow rapid bulking up of bulbs like Galanthus nivalis (Common Snowdrop). In others they have to work hard to establish because the weather changes so regularly. Only genuinely tough plants can do this. This unimpressive little clump in a brutally exposed spot in Vilnius, Lithuania is doing just that. Snow two days ago. A frost until lunchtime, lots of sun, then another frost. It doesn’t care. 🍃🌳🍃 Consider this a testimonial for #barberry...all too often overlooked as a great plant for full, even brutal, sun exposure. It, along with nandina, is often maligned unjustly as being woody , ungainly, and prickly. When left to its own devices, it can get out of control...WAY too big for its britches...and ultimately become sticker-y and unattractive. NO ONE wants that. The trick to growing them is 1️⃣ Don’t let them boss you! Get out those long bladed pruners and whack them back hard if you want them to be low-growing and dense, instead of tall, wiry and sparse. 2️⃣ Don’t coddle them! Unlike a lot of plants that say full sun on the care tag...what it really means is good morning sun, but will wilt in a typical hot Oklahoma afternoon. Not so barberry. These tough characters can take it, so give them full sun and even hot temps. 3️⃣ Try new and different varieties. I’ve grown Red Pygmy and Rosy Glow barberry for years, but am now more enamored of other foliage hues like gold, lime-green and maroony -orange. I’m about to try more ‘Orange Rocket’ barberry from @southernlivingplantcollection. 4️⃣ And don’t forget how valuable they are in the fall garden and border! Oh my, the colors they turn!😁😄😁 If I haven’t convinced you, maybe this pic (facing west!) of various barberry might do the trick. Tell me.
