tomona unagi SHSL / ultimate news reporter in her remnant of despair appearance

⚠️ warnings of abuse, alcohol, death, spoilers of sdr2, TMI ⚠️

here is some lore!

before getting into hopes peak academy

tomona moved from area to area frequently she disliked this because she wanted to keep the friends she talked to during childhood

her parents were divorced, however her father won custody over her meaning that she rarely seen her mother. tomonas father was very neglectful and very abusive towards her.

he was very neglectful to her by not buying her necessary supplies such as decent food, great clothing, etc so tomona had to be the breadwinner and earned a couple of bucks from bejng a papergirl.

sometimes during her papergirl duties, she would often read the news a lot which slightly inspired her in some way

one fateful day, tomona came home from school and saw her dad was drunk and had almost killed someone. tomona stepped in, shielding the person from harms way

"NO!!! Stay away! You're hurting him!"

her father attacked her however there were only minor cuts and other minor injuries

instinctively, tomona called the police and her father was then arrested.

a few weeks after the incident, numerous reporters came up to her and interviewed her she was titled a 'hero' for her bravery and stepping in to save the man who was almost killed

so, she stuck with that title as a 'hero' for many years as it was a coping mechanism of hers and a distraction from what she had been through

tomona wanted to do something, something that deeply inspired her. she wanted others to look up to her! she liked being interviewed, she liked the fame. thats where her path to being a reporter began

she started working as a small journalist then later became a junior news reporter who only interviewed her local area. this was when hopes peak became interested in her talent

"From that day on, I became a hero who saved the day! Now, I expose evil from allover the news!"

during hopes peak, she would offer helping with magazines, daily articles, bulletin boards and the morning announcements

she would then hangout with mahiru and hiyoko as:

mahiru and tomona almost shared the same talent field together (photography, broadcasting)

hiyoko and tomona are very gossipy lol

she was also friends with sato however they couldnt interact much with her due to sato being a reserve course student so they only hung out outside of school grounds

mikan and ibuki considered her as a friend however, tomona doesnt really interact with them so theyre only mutual

tomona also developed a crush on akane however tomona is stubborn to admit that she is smitten towards her

tomona felt like she couldnt get along well, she felt a bit lonely that barely anyone could understand her heroine personality

"Was that heroic of me? Yes? No? Actually, yes it was!"

however one day changed everything, changed her life, including everybody elses

the tragedy

seeing chiaki die in front of her eyes, she felt guilty. she was a hero, she couldve saved her! tomona started bargaining various ways she could save chiaki

junko manipulated everyone in class 77B including tomona herself

tomona from then on became a remnant which is the image shown up here! she began spreading despair across each type of news, mostly broadcasting. she displayed gory and false rumors in an act of showing her dedication to junko and despair itself, hoping it will lead others to despair

not only that, she blackmailed the government and other politicians across the world, causing them to go through a variety of wars with the help of mahiru koizumi. tomona saw this as an act of 'heroicness'

like fuyuhiko, nagito and mikan she also took a body part from junko, that being her right ear as she wants to hear the compliments as if she were junko herself so she cut her own ear off

she sees junko as a heroine who saved her from her trauma metaphorically, she didnt want to think of her past life any longer.

"Junko is my hero! Junko is OUR hero! Why not become like Junko Enoshima, feel the wrath of despair! Junko saved us, she saved me! She is our savior!"

"I wanna hear all the compliments. I am spreading despair! Isn't that HEROIC?! Chant my name! Praise me! This is Tomona Unagi, spreading DESPAIR!"

afterwards she and others were put into the neoworld program by the future foundation

killing school trip

when she saw monomi, she thought this was a dream that she was in

"Talking animals? That's a first! Am I dreaming?"

she is spotted at the airport, she is seen talking to herself until hajime and nagito surprised her

TU: "This is Tomona Unagi! Live at the airport... With a bunch of jerks..."

HH: ("Jeez... That girl is being very harsh... Anyways why is she even talking to herself? There's not much cameras besides from surveillances..)

NK: "Tomona! Hey!"

TU: "GAH!"

TU: "Don't scare me like that!"

TU: "Also I hope you guys didn't hear me talking to myself... If you guys did, then that would make me an embarassment!"

HH: ("We totally did not hear that...")

NK: "Anyways, you haven't met Hajime yet? Right?"

TU: "That's right! I haven't properly introduced myself to your little friend here."

TU: "Well, hi! I'm Tomona Unagi, hope we can get along well."

HH: "Hajime Hinata, I hope we get along too."

NK: "Judging by her monologuing, she's the Ultimate News Reporter."

HH: "Wow... The Ultimate News Reporter huh."

NK: "She has interviewed a lot of towns and cities! Apparently she has even interviewed politicians! Pretty talented if I say so myself."

HH: "How bold of her to do those things... She must be quite famous."

TU: "You guys know that I can hear you, right?"

TU: "And you guys DID hear me talking to myself! Gosh!"

tomonas report card states that she likes chocolate cake however she dislikes dish soap and black coffee. her dislike of dish soap will be mentioned in her free time events

unknowingly, she befriended mahiru and hiyoko once again

she was also involved with the twilight syndrome murder case

chapter 5 a midsummer nights spiral

BUUUT CHIAKI AND NAGITO DIEEEE!!! not in this au they die in chapter 6

ryota mitarai is here, therefore one of them is killed

in this chapter, the last island has not opened yet. monomi struggled to defeat the monobeast however, she tells everyone that there is an undiscovered area of the central island. that being a nature reserve

there are a bunch of animals there, mostly avians, reptilians, fish and insects after all it is a tropical island

however this chapter seems to focus on sonia because you can obviously tell what the nature reserve reminds her of

dun dun dun.

A BODY HAS BEEN DISCOVERED!

its ryota mitarai... found dead on the ground, a pool of blood splattered on the floor

muddy shoeprints were on the floor, judging by the looks of it there are boots. killer mustve used it

there is also a pitchfork right next to the body, its possible the killer used it as the weapon

covering ryota, a net? its uncertain what it was used for but it looks like ryota seemed to struggle getting out of it

a map of the nature reserve, it seems like both ryota and the killer seemed to have discovered the secret area earlier than the others

there are shoeprints on the mud, but they dont match the ones from the boots, they arent fresh though

in the shed, there are numerous photos of artwork scattered on the walls. they looked very unpleasant to look at

weird. there are water droplets on the floor? there arent any pipes in this shed.

theres a ton of foliage, the killer must have chosen this place to kill ryota

a wet wipe, looks like it has mud stains on it. killer mustve wiped their shoes

ryotas sketchbook before he died, seems like its a drawing of the shed

a pair of gardening gloves, its quite dirty and muddy

a note laid on ryotas desk it read: "I know what you did, there's no escaping from this."

can of soda in the bucket its empty though, killer used the bucket as a trash can

tinted windows of the shed, killer can see clearly however the victim could not see anyone until they burst out of the shed

blood on the shed wall, seems like there was some impact which made ryota hit his head pretty hard

shed padlock, killer seemed to have locked the shed with this. it took a lot of strength to open it

stain on ryotas shirt, its a brown stain? it cant be dirty water as theres clean water in the pond

"So then tell me?! Where would I find the GOD DAMN NET!?"

the killer found out about the drawings on the wall and decided to threaten ryota with a letter

the culplrit hid in the shed, then saw ryota coming

the culprit had a can of cola with them which they then shook to surprise ryota causing the stain on his shirt. afterwards they discarded it in the bucket

then later on they got out the fishing net from the pond to cover ryota which explains the water drops. to stop him from struggling, they forcefully pinned him onto the shed wall hitting his head hard from the impact

once he was weak, they killed him with the pitchfork

the killer was wearing boots when they killed him. however their original shoes were muddy so they cleaned it with a wet wipe

they locked the door with a padlock after that

HH: "To think it would be you... It's unbelievable. It has to be you, Tomona Unagi!"

tomona is stunned to say the least

she goes silent for a moment

"I see. That's how it is huh. Well done."

"It wasn't heroic of me... At all. To say the least."

"Regardless, I have nothing to say. Bravo everybody."

"My actions are unforgiven... It's really unfortunate. Nonetheless, at least you've cracked the code. It's time for voting."

IIIITS PUNISHMENT TIME!!!

TU: "How bold of you guys to talk to me..."

CN: "Tomona, I would like to ask..."

CN: "What were those pictures on the walls you saw in the shed?"

TU: "I-It was just a hunch that I overthinked about...

TU: "Those drawings... Looked straight out of Ryota's sketchbook..."

TU: "The artstyle.. It looked very uncanny...."

TU: "Since our memories were wiped, I assumed he... He was behind all of this."

TU: "I wanted to save you all from... Whatever intentions he had towards all of us... So I ended his misery once and for all.."

FK: "Tomona... You didn't need to save us..!"

TU: "I had to! He was gonna discard all of those drawings on the wall! I could see right through him! I— I'm sorry but he said so himself!"

*flashback*

TU: "Hey! What are you doing?!"

RN: "Uh— Nothing!"

TU: "I recognize that artstyle from those photos... You did this! Do you have any associations with whatever brought us to here?!"

RN: "I didn't do anything! Just let me discard them! I-I don't want anyone to see these disturbing drawings! For everyone's sake!"

TU: "Don't lie! Liars are losers! We both know that!"

RN: "AHH!! Please! I'm innocent! I don't remember making this! But if I discard them, nobody will have to feel uneasy! I'll replace them with happier drawings!"

TU: "That's nonsensical! Forgive me, but this is to protect my friends!"

HH: "Tomona... You did this.. Just for us? Right?"

HH: "You had suspicions towards Ryota and thought he was gonna end up doing something terrible..."

TU: "...Yeah. Pretty much.."

KS: "I can't believe he was gonna discard those!"

AO: "Dammit...! I can't... I can't believe this!"

TU: "...I—"

NK: "Tomona..."

TU: "What is it? I could see the tension through your eyes."

NK: "I'm not mad at all... Just one more question."

TU: "I'm all ears, go for it."

NK: "Do you truly think of yourself as a hero?"

TU: "...!"

HH: ('What kind of question is that?!')

SN: "Nagito, I do not think it's appropriate to talk to Tomona in that way!"

TU: "No... It's fine, I'll answer it."

TU: "Deep down... I never felt heroic enough... In fact, I never felt like a heroine at all..."

TU: "Pft... It's even embarassing to say it out loud! ...I even thought I was finally going to be heroic after I killed him."

TU: "After all... It was just a title that I was shortly infamous for and I stuck with it for the rest of my life..."

TU: "Now... All my actions are unforgiven. I'm truly not a hero. I'm just... False news I guess..."

AO: "Why... Just.. Why??"

AO: "We were getting along okay! I can't—"

TU: "Akane...."

TU: "..."

AO: "I didn't care if you called yourself a hero or not!"

TU: "Huh...?!"

AO: "You're still my friend! You were a hero in my eyes!"

TU: "Gah...!"

TU: "You thought of me... As a.. Hero?"

TU: "AKANE!"

HH: ('Seems like Akane understood her memo...')

TU: "Hm... No more tears... I have to go now."

AO: "Nonono— Waitwait! God dammit! Why'd you have to go so soon?!"

TU: "This is Tomona Unagi live on Jabberwock Island. Wrapping up this broadcast... Good night and good luck everybody..."

MK: "Let's give it everything we've got! It's.... PUNISHMENT TIIIME!"

BREAKING SUPERHERO! ☆ (tomona unagis execution, status: executed)

starts off with a news channel intro

tomona is live on camera doing the news

in front of her, monokuma is adjusting the teleprompter. tomona is also strapped onto the chair flailing

the teleprompters words are quick to read

'Today on Jabberwock Island, the weather will consist of baseball-sized hailstones.' read the teleprompter

the weather all of a sudden turns into a hailstorm in which hailstones start falling on her causing her to bleed

second prompt read that some birds have gone feral, in which a flock of birds start pecking at her

last prompt read: 'Breaking News! A Superhero is coming to save us all from the evil villain!'

tomona is launched from her chair, her chair was jetpack-like she was gonna kick the villains butt!!

thats when she realised, she wasnt the hero. she was the villain on the news!

a monokuma superhero started flying towards tomona and began beating her up

with an almighty and powerful beam, it shoots into her face

theres a hole where her face was supposed to be, like a giant entry and exit wound

her body falls onto the floor

TU: "Live on set! This is Tomona Unagi and this is your daily news!"

HH: "You seem to talk to yourself quite a lot like you're still on set..."

TU: "Yeaaah... I get a little worksick sometimes...."

TU: "My workplace, the locals, my classmates! They were all like family to me! I miss them..."

TU: "But nevertheless! I'm a hero! I gotta stay strong huh."

HH: ('How is her heroicness relevant to that...?')

TU: "If it weren't for my heroicness, I wouldn't have made it here! I also have support from all of my fans!"

HH: "Huh, you have fans? Then you must be famous!"

TU: "Pshh... Of course! I'm a news reporter! Duh!!"

TU: "You've gotta at least have a fanbase!"

HH: "Fanbases?"

TU: "I've seen some online! There was one called 'Tomona Unagi don't speak too much'!"

HH: ('That's a hate club! How are you oblivious to that!')

HH: "Are you sure it's a fanbase?"

TU: "Hajime... It's not what it looks like!"

TU: "They'reee... Probably just encouraging me to take a break! Speaking too much makes me a chatterbox so I don't blame them..."

TU: "Even if they were hating on me, they're still my fans!"

HH: "Uhhh... How come?"

TU: "Gosh you're not understanding are you?!"

TU: "Sheesh Hajime! Read what I'm thinking here!"

HH: ('Hm... she's probably thinking about...')

TU: "Ummmm? No?? Think twice here!"

TU: "Bots? Really? Since when were they intelligent enough to create a fanbase?!"

TU: "Hahaha! Like why would you even spend all your energy on hating on me, you're just as equivalent as a fan!"

TU: "It just makes you look utterly ridiculous!"

HH: "Oh I get it now!"

TU: "I'm glad you see the picture!"

TU: "Being a hero isn't easy! But you have to make it work!"

HH: "I could tell... Must be struggling to be a reporter huh."

HH: ('Apart of me thinks she is receiving a lot of hate...)

HH: ('Behind that mask, I think she's affected by those 'fanbases' she calls them.')

HH: ('Something doesn't add up with her reasonings... That could be just a hunch...')

HH: ('I could feel me and Tomona getting along well.')

TU: "Sheesh... It's always sunny out here! And that's a good thing!"

HH: "What's with you and the weather?"

TU: "Oh please! Where do I even begin?!"

TU: "I'm not a weatherperson but god whenever I'm interviewing outdoors..."

TU: "It's always GOD DAMN MISERABLE!"

TU: "Good thing it isn't hailing, right?"

HH: "Have you ever spoke about the weather on TV?"

TU: "Ehh... That's not my job."

TU: "I'm not a weatherperson or meteorologist, I can't really specialise well on those terms."

TU: "It seems gloomy to have a job like that!"

HH: ('You're literally a news reporter! You work in the same field as those people!')

TU: "Y'know I can read through you right?"

TU: "Tomonaaaa!!! Why are you mocking weatherpeople! You work with them!"

HH: "That's not how I sound at all...?!"

TU: "Hahaha!!! It's funny making fun of you!"

TU: "It's like laughing at a monotonous clown!"

HH: ('What's that even supposed to mean...?')

TU: "Anyways weatherpeople in my workplace looked so dreadful!"

TU: "Kinda like you Hajime! But anyway— They have little to no screentime at all!"

HH: "Will you stop messing with me?"

TU: "Gh...! Sorry... I honestly really am.."

HH: ('She looks like she's... Holding her tears? I can't tell...')

HH: "Hey, don't even worry about it."

TU: "M-Me...? Worried?! Gosh... You're making this a big deal!"

HH: ('You're kinda making it bigger to be honest...')

HH: "How about we continue the topic? If you'd like."

HH: "You haven't even told me properly why you didn't like being a weatherperson!"

TU: "Ugggghhhhh..... Fine!"

TU: "Well... It's such a bland and boring job to have!"

TU: "Could you *IMAGINE* only reading the details on how weather's gonna be like!"

TU: "Just to have a small amount on screen!"

HH: ('I wonder what she meant by that...')

TU: "This taste in my mouth gives me awful nostalgia..."

HH: "Isn't nostalgia supposed to be good memories?"

HH: ('She seemed to strongly to react to that...')

TU: "Thing is... I barely had any good memories when I was young."

TU: "The only thing I enjoyed was going onto people's doorsteps and riding my rusty bike to give them newspapers!"

TU: "Sometimes I often read them!"

HH: "Is that what got you into becoming a news reporter?"

TU: "Ehh... Yeah a little."

TU: "But there's more to that. I'll tell you when I'm ready."

TU: "Unfortunately... I had to move a lot. Which was reeeeeealllllyyy annoying because that meant I was far away from my mother!"

TU: "The villain spent a lot of money moving from lair to lair... He didn't care about me losing childhood friends..."

TU: "At least... I made a few friends now..."

TU: "It's funny that he spends a lot of money yet he doesn't have the necessities to buy the important things for me! Like toys and actual food! We were poor!"

TU: "Eugh...?! This taste is still there!"

HH: "Did you eat or drink something?"

TU: "No I haven't! It just comes straight out of nowhere!"

TU: "It reminds me of a bitter, slimy.... texture from the kitchen!"

HH: ('Oh, she's probably talking about...')

HH: "Maybe you could get a better drink at the restaurant next time."

TU: "Huh...? But what if there's no drinks?"

HH: "If there's a restroom, then you could wash off the taste in your mouth."

TU: "Gah! I could've thought of that to be honest..."

TU: "Sorry if I seemed quite cowardly... It's very unlike me to act unheroic!"

TU: "But hey! If you need anything, any help... I'll be there!"

TU: "Well... Hajime, until next time! This is Tomona Unagi, closing the news! ☆"

HH: ('Tomona looks like she grew up in a rough environment...')

HH: ('I feel guilty...')

HH: ('I think I learnt a lot about Tomona today.')

TU: "Oh phew! I totally thought you were gonna ask something else!"

HH: "Huh?"

TU: "I have my eyes following someone already!"

HH: "You have a crush?"

TU: "D-Don't say it like that!"

TU: "But Haha... Yeah...! Pretty much..."

TU: "Oh they're so cool! They're always fighting! I love their fierceness! It's intense!"

HH: ('Uhh... Tomona is probably talking about...')

HH: ('She seemed... saddened?')

TU: "Well... When I was younger I was on the news!"

TU: "The reason for that was because I was defeating the supervillain!"

TU: "The villain... He wasn't a great guy obviously... I had to work hard at a young age so I was the breadwinner of the lair!"

TU: "One fateful day however, I caught him red-handed! He was trying to kill someone!"

TU: "So with all my might, I stepped in! Only succumbing a few minor injuries!"

TU: "The supervillain was then sent to prison! I however... Was interviewed by multiple reporters...!"

TU: "They called me a hero! A hero! I was praised by my actions!"

TU: "So... In order to bring justice for those been attacked or under influence by supervillains across..."

TU: "I expose all evil from being a journalist who wrote newspapers to a news reporter recording broadcasts!"

TU: "Of course I also share good news! It would be bland if everything was all negative!"

HH: "I see now... I think I understand."

TU: "Ehh... It was just a bunch of metaphors. But I'm glad it was pictured well for you!"

TU: "And Hajime..."

TU: "Remember to be a hero to yourself!"

TU: "Every little praise you get, makes you heroic."

HH: ('No wonder why she's an inspiring person...')

HH: ('She's endured so much growing up...')

HH: "Thanks Tomona... I'll be a hero...!"

TU: "Well, see you Hajime! Tomona Unagi out! ☆"

HH: ('I'm glad that ended well...')

HH: ('I can feel a strong bond between me and Tomona.')
