Scientifically Accurate Little Mermaid?
So awhile back the when we were getting information of Disney's Live Action Little Mermaid Remake, a lot of the culture vultures began to try to appeal to science to claim the Live Action Little Mermaid should be well pale. Now this is clearly bad faith criticism, however I felt like showing why it's wrong.
So their argument goes something like "the mermaids live in the deep ocean, and if you look at creatures in the deep ocean they are pale because of lack of sunlight." So first off the is trying to force real world logic into a fantasy story where there exists half human and fish people, most marine life is sapient, and the is magic wielding half human and octopus people. But also, correct me if I am wrong, but the original film never states they are in the deep sea. In fact the film would go against this because King Triton is using dolphins to pull his chariot.
But even when playing with the idea of what they are saying, it's clear they don't know anything. This is because the so called pale deep sea creatures they are talking about, are actually more translucent like the Atacama Snailfish. Which should mean if they wanted a deep sea Little Mermaid both the live action and original animated film Ariel should look like Uncle Ugo from Luca.
But they are also ignoring the fact there are many deep sea creatures that aren't pale. Such as the Footballfish, the Humbolt Squid, the Sperm Whale, the Black Dragonfish, and the Gulper Eel.
Outside of that a scientifically accurate mermaid wouldn't look anything like the ones in either film. They would either look more like Luca from well Luca, or like the Mermaids from Mermaids Bodies Found. The latter one is a Mockumentary which presents forth a speculative evolutionary path for mermaids, although it does use the pseudoscience that is the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis in it.
One final example of an scientifically accurate mermaids can be found in the video simply titled Mermaids, which was created by the creator David Romero on YouTube.
In the end, if they really wanted a scientifically accurate Little Mermaid, then they should have had a problem with the original film as well. Written By Eris the Lorekeeper
How would Ercole react if he met Uncle Ugo?
oh you KNOW he would be shaking in his stupid little shorts. he wouldn't stand a CHANCE!!!
i want that twink OBLITERATED
How was Uncle Ugo going to make sure Luca stayed in the Deep? Did he have friends who would take shifts guarding Luca while he slept? Ugo doesn't seem the social type - he mentions there's nothing to do in the Deep but think and eat whale carcass. Did he have a ball and chain to hand?
Which headcanons do you have about Uncle Ugo?
I saw this a long time ago and I almost forgot about it!
I’ve honestly never given uncle Ugo much thought. He’s definitely very talkative so I imagine he’s that uncle. The type where you have to keep pulling out an earbud because they keep talking.
I think he’s a sweet guy, maybe a little weird, but there’s nothing wrong with weird! I’m not sure if he’d be see-through in his human form, but I doubt he’s ever gone to the surface considering his heart stopping from being in the sunlight zone. “Too much oxygen,” he said.
I think that him and Luca would’ve learned to get along. Sure, Luca would get tired of him now and then, but maybe if they spent a little time together, they’d learn to appreciate each other.
I don’t get why Ugos an angler fish, maybe that’s a sea folk version of culture??
Wouldn’t it be funny though?
“I’m half clown fish and half gold fish!”
I don’t have many thoughts about Ugo, mainly just cuz I don’t know how to feel about him. But I hope this answered your question! 😅
